Polygamy no fun, admits Ethiopian

An Ethiopian man with 11 wives and 77 children is urging people not to follow his example and is giving advice on family planning and contraception.

After seeing his fortune disappear under the competing demands of his enormous family, Ayattu Nure, 56, even urges people not to get married.

Ayattu Nure says he regrets having so many children - he cannot remember all their names.

This is so sad and very backward practice that should not be done especialy during this time -i mean the modern time.People need to go with time otherwise every thing is going to be down fall for this world -particularly the developing ones.First of all one should not have to bear so many children knowing that he can not fullfill their very bassic needs .And secondly it is something that directly affects the morality and the social statues of our sisters and mothers. How do you feel if your mother's husband has multiple of wives besides her .This is insane .Evern the Koran do not support this if we do not take just a part of its quotations. And now most people in the muslim world understand this and prefer marring just one and only one.But to see some one who can not even feed himself with a bunch of wives is so disturbing .
And now we are in this time that the productivty of the people/land is not balanced with the population growth .So we can not just fill the land with people knowing that we can not support ourselves.
In this case i think the govrnment of Ethiopia should pass a legislation that prohibits polygamy.
The government can not talk about the rights of people while the rights of women has been abused to the worest degeree.
Woman of ethiopia should be given a Referundem to decide about polygamy. They should get a self-determination about their fate.
Thanks...

Uncontrolled population growth and depletion of resources is one of the basic problems in Africa in general and in Ethiopia in particular. I hope the government will be deligent in teaching the Ethiopian people about the advantage of monogamy and birth control. Imagine if each of the boys of this guy have multiple wives and have atleast 30 kids each they will have their own tribe in no time. Funny but not so funny.

I believe polygamy should be incouraged but monitored as the same time for containing any spreading disease that may affect the family and beyound. The individual story with 11 wife and 77 offsprings is a reality and part of a greater culture for Ethiopians and Africans as a whole. We can not change and irradicate our culture only to embress western or christian civilization that is none-ethiopian, or, to accept western culture that doesn't recognise communal liveing must be seen as dangerious trend that may undermine the survival of the comunity under discussion. The government should restrain itself from taking away indivdual rights of religion, or choice of life style, that can be practised by citizens. Infact, the government should incourage responsible polygamy marriages as they promise to maintain communal life style and a culture that would survive for the next generation.

I real admire him how he able to provide them with all the necessities. I am proud of him. Why you don't worry about your poor Gondere instead of talking the guy who live off our fertile land, Oromia? In Gonder, Gonderes are having trouble in having even one healthy child. So why you don't talk about that instead of guy from the green land (Oromia). If you are a genuine person, don't worry, we can afford to feed our children through our hard work.

I have a good strategic plan for our people, and in the future, I will have a new viable plan to provide all the necessities (excellent education, health care, and more) for our people. There is no way of forcing our people to stop producing children. We have every right to produce children as much as we want. At the same time, we will work on changing things for good, and providing all the necessities in order to produce healthy population.

As I see the picture of this close and extended family, they actually look good. They don't look as miserable as the many other Ethiopians that crowd the streets of the towns and cities in the country. Regarding why many Ethiopians have so many wives and children, a funny geography lecturer at 6 killo university once said "people don't have electricity in many homes to stay up and do somethings and so they go to bed as early as the son goes down and make love with their partners during the long night sleep, resulting in the growth of the population." He also added that lack of the economic development and unimproved living condition in that country causes people to despair and be careless about their own wellbeing. Do you think he was right?

Hi guys,

As some of you have already mentioned it, most of us are totally brain washed by the western system. How lucky to afford the time and money for all that big family. We probably can’t do a tiny bit of it for a kid. They for sure are much more happier than we are.

Two things to notice technically:

- No sexually transmitted disease can’t just be created in a closed multi-relationship like this one.
- It takes the guy to have sex only once a month for about 8 years to get where he is. Again, he do have more time to spare than do.

It is disgusting to read some of the comments given by those who are DINGAY RAS. They try to make fun out of the condition of Obbo Ayatu but they could not even express themselves upto his level. Look how the person they try to undermine expressed himself properly. For the idiot peole like them he said ""People see me as a funny man, but there is no fun in my condition. I am a desperate man struggling to survive." Yes, there is no fun in his condition. He is striving to raise his children upto the level of his knowledge. His children's face show that he is feeding them properly. This is typical nature of a responsible OROMO FATHER. He didn't abandon them as some others do.

So what is funny in his condition? He is doing just what he knows from his lived experience and wisdom. The little knowledge you gained from school could not help him or his likes. Because you don't know how to use that knowledge. Instead, what you know is spiting on the desperate people like Ayatu who have paid tax and "erbo" for your schooling from their meagre resource. Your education is just a wastage. It could not change you because you are stone head. If Ayatu and his likes have got the education opportunity you had, they would have made their situation more pleasant. Even at the present status his way of expression shows that he is more wisely than you - the educated for nothing.

In the west, people do have similar analogue with what your 6 kill university lecturer said. Statistic shows that when there is a blackout in the city or throughout the country, the possibility of making more love is very high because people have nothing else to do. As result of that, there will be more pregenancy and sexual activities in order to stay happy.

For those of you who made a negative comment, you need to see and learn something from that image (positive image). Did you see how they are so closer to each other, even if you throw any tiny thing to that crowed, it's very difficult to land on the ground. It reflects their unity, oneness, functional family, one branch, shiny flowers, and enery. Moreover, they are well organized, and well behaved in that picture. They show nice smile and happy face, that is something positive for us who live in far distance. The green grass, and well grown plants behind them show posittive image about their region too. Did you see the clean green grass surrounding their home, it shows that it's there to protect them, and to feed them clean and fresh breathing air. That is why they look so well fed and healthy. Anyone with rightmind, and openmind can see all those positive image through that picture. Someone stated on this web site, regarding the above people, the people of greenland, the people of highland, the people with confidence, full of hope, and wisdom, they are your brothers and sisters, that was referring to me. Yes, they are definitely my brothers and sisters, and I am proud of them too. I want to see them in good shape and look healthy. Here they are, they are healthier than anyone can imagine. Do you know that the children you see in picture can be our next generation who protects our fatherland from foreign enemies? It's power in the making. Remember, the people like Darartu Tulu, Fatuma Roba, Kananisa and others came from the same clan or region. As the world knows, they are the world class champs and heroic forces. For sure, there will be many of them among the people you see in that image. At the same time, we all know that this kind of miraculous thing can happen very rarely. So I am in the same situation with surprise and pride like you. I must say thank you God/Allaha from giving us all these new flowers (mati).

That means Mr Ayatu will easily have 4900 children and grand children. If U continoue to the next step they will be close to half a million. Let's try another maths. You are wrong! I never said, I hate the whole Amhara people. I restrictly directed my viable critics to Naftagna Amharas who are very tiny minority from far North (part of Gonder and Gojam). I have no problem with poor Amharas who do their own thing, live in their own region and stay away from others business. For sure, there are good Amharas among those bad Naftagnas who can still live with us in peace and harmony. So we will sort out (Gird from Fre) as time permits. We cannot generalize things here. We need to be very careful when we say things here.

Now, in the western media, Ethiopia named the second populous African nation. The media also claims that Ethiopia is a regional power in Africa. People from Africa also believe in that. So am I. I want my country to be number one. So we need to compete with Nigeria like India and China. At the same time, we real need to put our house in order, I mean try to improve our people's living standard. As the western media said, we need to apply the same strength to our economic development in order to overcome the current situation. This was the exact phrase: "Ethiopia seems to be working hard in reproducing itself, so it should apply the same strength in improving their living standard".
07/28/05 @ 08:58

As long as our economy grows and develops, Ethiopia has no population problem. Ethiopia is a huge country with a size about 5 times England and more than France and Spain combined. When considering our land, Ethiopia is in fact less densely populated than almost all western European countries. But in order to improve our GDP per capita, our economy needs to grow by far larger margin than our population growth. If the population growth continues at 3% rate and our economy growth at 3% then there is no increase on our GDP per capta with will keep us at the bottom.

So I am not worried about the population growth. It is going to be our asset.

I don't think anyone can deny that, this is a nice family portrait. It speaks volume about the well being of the family. Despite the huge number of children he has, they all look GREAT. Well dressed and looking good. I give a HUGE credit for Ayattu Nure for being such a fantastic father. He is far better and more civilized than the million dead beat dads in America who could not even buy a diaper for their kids.

I may disagree with Polygamy and all that, but my great respect for being a good FATHER. And one other thing, there are some who have unoffical wives and mistreses on the side, at least this man is HONEST if not proud of his situation.

Man,

I have idea for this man who is in trouble of paying his bill due ot so many children he has due to the poligamy. I am sure he is not the only person especially in Arsi, Bale zones. Poligamy is very common.

There are also unofficial poligamy in Ethiopia where you don't see legal marriage but you hear about children hatching every where from different 'put in's = Kimit' especially when the father dies, you can hear some fight on the common asset the father has even his pocket money sometimes. So I am not surprised with since all is what I am very familir with.

I don't expect the gov have time to deal with such issues. Guys, I can list millions of problems like this which the gov underlook. Our goverment is busy all the time in divid and rule not solving social and economical problems. I don't even call it 'government' as our adminstration doen't know our people and their problm especialy in areas other than Tigrai. Our adm always use their name only during election time, then forget them until the coming election time.

I am proposing a solution for Abo Nuri to solve his economical problem due to his big family. He needs to appraocah NGOs associated with medical genetic to make some kind of research in his family, in reture they can pay him back big money. His family is a paradize and Medical resource for research as you don't find such big family from same father and half-brothers and sister, what a paradize for genetic research. It is a win-win scenario both for his family and for medical progress especially if there is some kind of common disease in his family or genetic background, what a treasure

He had relaied on his wealth when he easily grabed (snached)a beautiful young girls from the poor and desperated families, but he paied the praice, for the seen that he had commited, he lost all his wealth, now he have no power to marry even a retaierd, a 100 year old lady. Finally, he tried to expose him self to get some help now, too late, not him the situatin that he is in is exposed him.
Now, he has to appologise all his wives for the crime that he has commited against those 11 beautiful girls (women) but MSKIN YEDEHA LIGOCH who he had graped them easily by the force of evil money he used to have.
Mr Ayattu, you will be judged in front of God for not even knowing yuor children's names.

What an idiot person you are! You want to be from another planet. I think the difference between you and Mr. Ayattu is: he has kept all his wives with him and you have run away from women with whom you have had sex! Imagine with how many women you had sex in your life or still having sex. Probably this man has never been to any other women than his wives. Some of you have been having sex with 30, 45, 100 or more women or also some women have been having sex with 15, 25 or 35 men. Therefore, this is not only the problem of Mr. Ayattu, but also it is the nature and tendancy within all human beings. It is a nature which we have to fight against. Don`t forget that some of you might have killed many children through abortion!!!

Did you see what the BBC World News shows on its TV channel all the time? Shame on you! Mr Nuri's family problem will be fixed and their well being too.

God has blessed Ato Ayattu Nure and his seven wives with seventy seven children! They are all alive and many ways better off than many unfortunate monogamous families who couldn't even raise their children becasue of financial and other problems. Such problems are abundant especially in urban centers.

There is no reason to criticize or lough at this blessed family. They, like all of us are products of some of the most ancient family traditions still existent in Ethiopia. Such traditions exist also elsewhere in Africa and Asia.

I am sure this family, and they are one family, have to teach us more about humanity inspite of the many presumable problems they face. They deserve respect; and Ato Ayattu is from his own words, ready to accept whatever new ways to bring people to to a monogamous culture. And notice that the report didn' even mention of one Hiv positive case in Family Ayattu, because they are from rural Ethiopia and they are a cohesive group!

If you all will permit me, I will recommend that Ato Ayattu and his family be studied as a cultural point of reference by Ethiopian anthropologists so that our coming generations will learn from them. Secondly, I WOULD LIKE TO RECOMMEND THAT THE so called YARA FOUNDATION OF NORWAY give the 200,000 dollars, planned to be wasted on KILLER ZENAWI, to help the Ayattus in educational and other human needs! After all they need this money for they are honest but poor Ethiopians; and KILLER ZENAWI has already stashed away his ill-gotten millions in Kuala Lumpur. And that is a shame! So folks, let us atleast this time all unite as decent Ethiopians, and not as sectarian protagonists, and call for the YARA PRIZE TO BE AWARDED TO FAMILY AYATTU ( not to be mistaklen for encouragement of polygamy), but as an appreciation of their decency as simple Ethiopians!

It is interesting to read different comment threw by all commentators. Some are very interesting, funny, entertain and some are concerned about Mr. Ayatu's 11 wives and 77 children. Polygamy is common in all developing countries because of religion or primitive tradition. I am not concerned about him, but my concern is the poor women who are suffering because of Mr. Ayatu ego. His idea was based on the wealth he had and the power over the women. He still thinks, that he hasn't made any mistake, it the government fault not take care his children. I do think the government has to intervene to this problem, by sharing the Yara award of 200,000 dollars, However the mistake has been made for not knowing the consequence by having so many children and wives. Where was the Ethiopian Government, when Mr. Ayatu married many wives?
The place of women in Ethiopia treated as property. It frustrates me. The Government responsible the improvement life condition of women in Ethiopia, that why we have government. The government should enforce the low of the land to respect woman right and continue to evolve the act and practice of the process.

Dear Bonso Gemeda!
first of all, I will pray for the well being of Mr. Ayatu's children. Everybody, who can afford, should help this family in addition to thousands of charitable organizations ethiopians found these days.
The question should be: do not we need a policy from the central governmesnt, after we saw all the tragedy we are immersed, to completely stop this way of life?
It is not fair for the wives who deserve an equal partner, husband. Women and their bodies are not machines. They have feeling, soul, desire. We have to be careful giving any kind of support for this type of association. We do not have the means and resources to fuel the population explosion.
We should learn some from the Chinese until we can raise our heads just abve the water.

On a series note, i do not have appetite for Expletives and trash talks. This is a place where we can bring our ideas and voice our opinions about the situation we are in. Those of people who spew hatred need some scolding.
I read your piece about Mr. Ayetu. You bring some lines from the bible to support your arguement. What about the ones which are talking about responsibility? God gave us the earth and allow us to use it accordingly(you remember Adam and eve). You are giving your thumps up for what? If it is for the courage for him to come out and talk against it, Kudos for you. If you are cheering because he has 11 wives and 100 children, you are wrong. He himself starts understanding the ground rule.
"I feel like killing myself when I see my hungry children whom I cannot help," Mr Ayattu says.

"...His wives have given birth to more than 100 children but 23 have died."
Let us stop the blaming game and start acting responsibly.

Ethiopean population need to be controlled and one way of achieving it: educate the puplic on family planning and so on. This is outragous .....and the man said he could not even remember the name of his children; it is really funny but serious matter. If this trend continous, Ethiopea will soon be listed among china & India for it's size of the population which would be diffult for the country to support it due to her limited and mis-managed resouces. Howeve, the man has spoken, and let everybody leason to his advice.

I appreciate the spirit of sharing, the stands one's exhibit on the matter. The situation, Mr. Ayattu, knowingly, or else brought about this. In my view what he has done in any ways should not be condoned, but rather learn what at stake if others follow the same step. Yes, polygamy is permitted in my parts of developing countries, and in religious arena, but there are conditions and limitations attached to it. What we have here is an absolute abuse, and disregard for family structure, and norms that an individual should take responsibly. I applaud the maturity, and courage he demonstrated by coming out and sharing his experience, and advising others from restraining if I may say, the predator nature of out control sexual desire, having said that I am more disturbed about the children, and the role they may take, I guess, some one can argue effectively, that is to be seen in the future. Question: Does Ethiopia at it is current dire economical circumstance affords irresponsible increases to its existing population? - Having posted our deep felt opinions, how should we approach this issue, and help out if possible. Please, abstain from letting each other down rather stick to the substance.

I am really amazed with this man sexual desires and I call it, it is sexual obesity problem. The reason why man is different from animal is the way he conduct his sexual desire appropriately. I totally agree with one man with one woman. I petty all women in his life will never know what is to be love and to be loved. The most surprising thing for me is I believe he is the record broker by having this much wives for himself. I heard Muslim men are promised in their heaver 72 wives but this man he already have here on earth 77 wives! WOW

In Islam, polygamy isn't forbidden. However, it comes with great responsibility.1st, the maximum that is allowed is 4 wives. 2nd, he ought to be able to share his wealth between them equally. 3nd,if a child or one of his wives goes to bed hungry, he is not only a sinner, but he lacks the IQ to be called a normal human being. 4th,we don't know what religion or tribe this person subscribes to, so pre-judging him doesn't do us any good.

I believe, This is not the only case in Ethiopia, we are as citizens responsible to teach and convince people like him. This is unacceptable behavior. This man does live in his own fantasy world. We all are responsible to educate him and the government should have a kind of control (rules) to enforce such unacceptable behavior. A such behavior should not accepted by the society.

It is unique human being even though he needs to think about his children's well being by providing them all the necessities. So far he was doing what man supposed to do. He is a good father. The above piece was one of the cleanest i saw from you. You seem a reasonable person at times. Cut the other #@45 and let us have this window of opportunity to know you better and a feel about your thougnts.
Let us come to the middle and work around it. That is the only option remains for the millions of poor people who was following Dr W, Engineer X, Coleniel Y, and Mr and Mrs Z for nothing.
Dig your soul deep and entertain the other thoughts. Leave the ones who are going no where.
Remember, We have the luxury of breathing, sleeping, eating, drinking, going to school, reading, living in a house or an apartment, thinking about the future...etc. The millions who happen to live back home are not lucky enough to know even where their next meal will come. We are splitting hair and spend time and money to further our way of thinking.
The question will be: Are we doing this for the real benefit of our people? or to bolster our ego?
Time has changed. Real soulution on the ground is the only viable solution there is for the millions who needs solution not tommorrow, Yesterday.
Collectively we might have a chance. other wise, a lot of time will be spend on plans, ideas, and dreams. We will have difficult time rainning hard on the problems on time as a whole and optimize our unity and minmize the differences.
