Ethiopia - Bring Ethiopian activists home for the holidays

Daniel Bekele and Netsanet Demissie, both courageous human rights lawyers and coordinators of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) in Ethiopia, have been in detention for over two years. They are on trial for treason related charges because of their peaceful human rights work, dedicated to ending poverty in their country. If found guilty, they could face life imprisonment or the death sentence. After numerous delays by the court, they are due to receive their verdict on 24 December.

This could be their third holiday season behind bars and away from their loved ones.

Join GCAP and CIVICUS by:

1) sending a message of hope to Daniel and Netsanet and their families;

2) sending a letter of appeal to the Ethiopian authorities, urging them to bring Daniel and Netsanet home for the holidays.

3) sending a greeting card by post to Daniel and Netsanet, via the Ministry of Justice

Let them stay where they are embracing their courage, if thats what courage is supposed to be for CUD sympathisers. These are cowards, I dont see it as courage anyway. Mot yenafekat ayet ye demeten afincha tashetalech malet new.

I think it better if they stay in prison.
Because those paradoned Kinijit mafia
have done nothing good for people of
Ethiopia rather than running to block aid
for poor Ethiopians and forming strong tie
with enemies of Rthiopia.

I can’t imagine the mind of some Ethiopian or non Ethiopians who did put the comment under Daniel Bekele and Netsant demisse stories. It says” kill them, lock them. And so on.

Believe me a person who thinks this way is very very idiot, useless and uneducated who has no value to himself and human race. I wonder some one still living in darkness at 21 century. He or she must be a person who does not have hope in their life and don have confidence and do all sort of negativity since they are frustrated and trapped their life?

The perfect example of WOYANE and its supporters campaign on online sites like NAZRET.COM are shown above in the first 3 or 4 comments. Get a life you EPRDF HEWAHAT hodam AWRE HULU. These two heros, you might keep them in jail, but you cannot imprison their spirit. Free all freedom lovers.

Jiksa, what do you mean spirit?
As a christian i know from bible two
spirits.one is God’s (Holyspirit) and the
other one from devil (evil-spirit),the
kind of spirit ,like DrBrihanu suffered.
If they have such evil spirit as you said, they are
dangerous people for the whole nation.
Atleast they have to stay in prison some
some more years.

I am writing this because I believe Nazret.com does unpreccented service to Ethiopians of every political persuasions, and I would like that to continue. But some Ethiopians seem unable to comprhend that posting their point of view is a privledge, and they seem bent to degrade the very principle that Nazret.com upholds. Every one who chooses to be heard at least should have common decency. I have read at least two letters here above wishing death for the two prisoners who are portrayed in the article; letters like these, I think, emanate from people who are unable to rationalize concepts. Their inability of not thinking, however, could not be a license for them to throw insults at whomever they disagree with. One might not like what the prisoners stood for, and that is fine. But one should not not criminalize their thinking. When people or government start criminalizing ideas that happen to contradict theirs, Society will take a long path to intolerance and thought persecution. And no Ethiopian should wish another Ethiopian to die because he/she does not like the politics of the other. Many Ethiopians have died for scores of years because of what they believe in, and there should be an end to it. I know sometimes some provocative writings might squeeze through undetected, but please people at Nazret.com be more vigilant in the future. For some Ethiopians who reside in North America only Nazret.com allow us to voice our opinions. The two Ethiopian websites in U.S.A. cannot fathom that some people think independently of what prescribed by the know-it-all Ethiopian politicians here. Amazingly enough though these are the people who claim to bring democracy to Ethioppia.

Minister Meles Zenawi
PO Box 1031, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

To: Meles Zenawi,

What kind of satisfaction do you get by imprisoning innocent people? What has Ethiopia and Ethiopians done against you to continue punishing us with all these unfettered injustices and continued lies? This is a country for your children and grand children why do you choose to torture us like Daniel and Nesanet. If school mates and other people in Addis have made of your height and ugly face you have to over look it after so many years and should stop you vendetta. Please let Daniel Bekele and Netsanet Demissie go free and do not try to excuse yourself with your usual lies. You have imprisoned them for over two years and should be enough even to you.
Sincerely,
Gelmo

What kind of Abetuta is it to inquire the freedom of ‘conscience prisoners’ by degrading one country’s PM? Does it go hand in hand, saluting and soliciting to one"s authority at the same time?

If you want to play as a gelagaay or negotiator ask or beg the leader"s authority, patience and understanding..That is what you can do. If you have to present a case to some one to ask him a favor. Then you must betray - at least for few seconds - your self and ego, or enmity towards that person.

Some of us in this site are not at all tactical, leave alone diplomatic to facilitate the release of two Ethiopian ‘political prisoners’. What ever they have done, i don’t know since all polit prisoners are released they should be released. Logic and justice of a middle stander?

I would beg our leader like this.

Dear Prime Minister, first don’t be provoked by ‘unripe idioms’ of some people who seek the freedom of Daniel and Netsanet.

I ask you, Mr. PM appreciating from the bottom of my heart for what you have done in the past for the Kality Kinijit prisoners, may you lend the same mercy to Daniel and Netsanet?

I Remain appreciative for your development agenda and may God help you to see Ethiopia prosper and its citizens be happy.

sincerely,

a Nazret mid dayblogger

If these gus want to be martyrs so be it. #8 of their compatriots admitted that they have made mistakes and were partly to blame for the after election unrest. These scums were part and parcel of the movement to bring down the government by street insurrection. There is a price for everything. The government is only carrying out its constitutional duties.. bring to justice guys responsible for the death of the innocent in order to climb to power. Didnt Hailu Shawel say that he estimated 15000 would lose their lifes for them to be crobated?

Bravo M.T.
It is true, you attract more bees with honey. I hope these guys can go home for the holidays.Personally, all sides have done enough dirt for all to be forgiven and bury the hatchet. CUD is no more in my opinion. I don’t like Meles. The lack of leadership in Kinijit and other movements right now IS WHAT WILL ASSURE HE IS OUR DICTATOR FOR A LONG TIME!

For true ethiopians : Dont let some of the comments here insult your intellegence . some of writers pretend to be hard line supporters of the govt and write words which is hurtfull and more divisive. You sholuld know by now who this people are and what there agenda is .But check thier name and see how they contradict themselves on other issues (although sometimes they use d/t kinds of username). ONE WHO OPPOSE AND HAVE OPPOSITE VIEW OF LEADERS IN POWER OF ISSUES OF GREAT IMPORTANCE FOR THE COUNTRY, ONE WHO RESPECT OTHERS AND HIS OWN CULTURE : THAT IS A GOOD CITIZEN FOR THAT COUNTRTY.
