Ethiopia wins trademark rights for coffee brands

ADDIS ABABA, Dec 20 (Reuters)
- Ethiopia has successfully won trademark rights for its specialty Harar and Sidamo coffee names, it said in a statement on Thursday.

Earlier this year, the African producer had a protracted tussle with Starbucks Corp over the use of the two names in the United States.

"Ownership rights to its two specialty coffees, Harar and Sidamo, are fully (protected) in the global coffee trading regime," the statement from the country's Intellectual Property Office said.

"No company here-to-forth will trade with Ethiopian coffee names as its trade mark."

The statement said Ethiopia had signed agreements with 60 global firms to distribute its coffees.

It is a great news and a great day for the hard working Ethiopian farmers, for all Ethiopians and also to all who initiated and supported all the way in this struggle- starting from the Ethiopian Government, Oxfam International and millions all over the world. This will give Ethiopia and the farmers a better bargaining position and increase their quality along the way.
Victory at last!!

Good deal! Ethiopia surly deserves and to claim its unique natural commodities to be authenticated as its owen, should always preserve its trade mark in the global market. There are so many bests and scavengers to take advantage of Ethiopia’s natural and unique resources and commodity. Please don’t let your guards down on our intellectual property rights.

May GOD bless our people and country.
