World Bank $256 mln for Ethiopia health, power line

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) -
The World Bank said on Friday it had approved $256 million in grants and credit to help Ethiopia boost basic services like health and education, and aid power transmission to Sudan.

"Of the total, $215 million is International Development Association (IDA) grant to Ethiopia to continue promoting basic services," the bank said in a statement from its office in Addis Ababa.

"The remaining $41.05 million is credit to Ethiopia to help finance its portion of a new transmission line connecting Ethiopia to Sudan's power grid," it added.

"The project will enable Sudan to replace domestic thermal generation with surplus hydropower surplus from Ethiopia."

Yes this is another very exciting news for the day in Ethiopia. I wonder what the hungry shabia would say about this amazing development while they starving to death the entire Eritrean papulation.

Thanks to world bank. Where is the demonistrator at this time? I think they relazed that EPRDF is hard rock to touch. Indeed Ethiopia for ever. Yeha

No question that global situation is helping willing 3rd world administrations to promote development for their own people. But, I believe this current Ethiopian administration should be applauded for trying to take every opportunity they get to launch Ethiopia foreward. I am sure when this temporary distrust among the parties and people is gone, the EPRDF's positive mark on the country will be shining for a long time.

I wish you all Ethiopians, at home and in the diaspora, a Merry Christmas!

What World Bank is doing for our country is a la Marshal plan of USA to Europe shortly after second World War. They used the help wisely and developed their distracted country.
That is exactly what we are doing now. With a good Ethiopian government indeed. Thank you WB for your confidence to our country.

What excellent news. I hope every pennies will go towards health and education. The Ethiopia health system needs to enhance. I had a chance to visit some of the hospital they don’t even have hot water it was very depressing to witness that

Pouring money to the nation without effective oversight of the spending ... is not different from not giving. WB has never been effective in tracking the spend and ensuring that the money is spent effectively to the intended purpose. The ineffectiveness of the use of funds is not uniquely the character of the Ethiopian leadership -- many developing nations are notorious on their irresponsible, wasteful and ineffictive use of money -- largely because of corruption and lack of capacity (skilled personnel, infrastructure and functional legal system). But, it is better getting the $$$ than not getting it.

It is a good development in terms of hadro electric electrification in Ethiopia. But I don't understand why borrowing $41 million to connect it to Sudan while it is obvious that the Chinese are building two huge Dams in Sudan. What if Sudan says oh thank you we have our own. I think it is better to spend the money to electrifay Ethiopia first.

Yeha, This is about Ethiopia not Eritrea. Maybe it's true that all Woyane supporters are willing to break free from Ethiopia.

Well i hope that the money will benefit the people of Ethiopia and not the Bandas pockets!

re: Comment from: GRAVITY

You should research before commenting. This is the only gov’t that genuinely spread development to all regions of Ethiopia. They have done by far a great deal in the past 17years than Mengistu and Haileselassie combined together. I am not saying that Eth is immune to corruption but the World Bank expressed great satisfaction with Ghana and Ethiopia in Africa with respect to their financial management in 2001.

That is great to hear. But the dosage of good news these days is becoming too much for some of us. I am afraid some may get a heart attack. I hope Nazret.com will not be held responsible for the heart attacks the continuous flow of good news could cause.

eshi another good news, What are kinijits going to do now? may be get together some where and oppose it. hey Birtukam Mikegna what are you thinking? despite the negative campaign by the Kinijit diaspora, the support to our country from every corner is increasing. USA secretary of State Condolisa Rice opposed HR2003, the World bank, European Union, and IMF are continuing their support to ethiopia. Ethiopia's Economy is among the fastest growing economies not just in Africa but also globally. What next, if this isnt enough for the CUD to reconsider its hate policy let them get admitted for psychiatric examination. They need to take some medication,,Ethiopia is a country that deserves to be helped to get out of poverty.

Debebe, good question. The answer is Ethiopia is investing on that to export Electricity to Sudan. Sudan already import $100,000,000.00 worth of elecricity from Ethiopia per year. Sudan is one of the fastest growing economy in Africa because of the oil they have. The dom they are building is extream;y small because of two reasons. One Egypt won't allow them to use large amount of water and two they don't have their own rivers on other part of the Sudan. They still need large amount of electric energy so Ethiopia will fill that gap.

While we appreciate the help we get from world bank, the credit will be paid in five years from income of exporting elcricity.

God Bless ethiopia!

Six years ago electric power was on and off in the major cities across the country. Today, we exporting it. What a marvels achievement. Wait until Gibb III completes. Our beloved Ethiopia will shine. We just have to make sure that the renegade CUD don't interrupt
the progress the country is making.
