Ethiopia activists found guilty
An Ethiopian court has convicted two anti-poverty activists of inciting violence after the elections in 2005.
Daniel Bekele, who works for ActionAid International, and local charity worker Netsanet Demissie could face up to 10 years in prison.
The men were acquitted of more serious charges of violating the constitution.
They were the last of more than 130 defendants charged in relation to the protests complaining of fraud in polls won by the prime minister's party.
ActionAid spokesman Tony Durham said the group were dismayed by the verdict.
The men will be sentenced on Wednesday.
"Despite the lack of evidence proving their involvement in leadership and participation during the unrest, no evidence could be found to refute accusations of incitement," judge Mohammed Aminsani told the court, AFP news agency reports.
"As a result, the court has found them guilty on this respect."
Hundreds of thousands of people took part in demonstrations at alleged vote-rigging and some 193 people were killed.
Most of the dead were protesters, killed by security forces.
In August, the authorities pardoned more than 30 opposition members detained after the protest march two years ago.
Their release came a month after 38 senior opposition members were freed after signing a letter of pardon acknowledging a role in the disorder after the polls.
Here is democracy in action. Balezizewoche enekuwane des yalachehu, beterefe lenanetem yefered kene endale endateresu. Biyanes biyanse be mayekerewu ye layegnawu bete fered ayezenegam ena.
I couldn’t believe they found them gulity. I am not suprised either. It’s Weyane justice. I hope one day Meles will be in jail. He is the criminal who murder thousands of our brothers and sisters.
no one should left over behind in jail.
if the super troubles get’s pardon then
those two should be free.
Justice has served!!!!
RESPECT to low and order PPL
You have to teach to those don’t respect the Ethiopian constitution!!!
Why is it that, judges presiding over high profiled, cases are always “sick.” It shameful and embarrassing that the cases of Kinijit leaders, Tamara, Eseye and brothers, Daneil and Nestanet have been postponed Fifty Nine times all together.
The real justice will be on Zenawi and his henchmen who are creating havoc in the whole Horn of Africa. Zenawi and Co. will face justice for massacring innocent civilians in Gambella, Awassa, Addis Ababa, Ogaden, Mogadishu etc etc. The crime dossier of Zenawi and CO. is becoming big and fat. Human right agencies throughout the world are documenting genocide, rape, village burning, hanging etc etc all over the regions.
Who ever violating the rule of law of the country, the result will be severe. Indeed Justice has served on this matter. Yeha
Brother Amsterdamer are you ready getting close now. Yeha
It’s funny they released the leaders and kept behind these lawyers. What happened to the shemagiles that are supposed to getting prisoners of concsience released, i guess first they have to find them guilty of the highst crimes and then they let them go.Justice system the EPRDF style.EPRDF is really confused and don’t know what to do and which way to turn.
It is obvious; we cannot expect something different from the kangaroo court. You cannot expect eagle from the snake’s egg, and if there is anybody who expected something different, that must be someone who never new is the true nature of Woyane.
Woyane has proved its outrageous dictatorship time and time again. These two innocent brave men have not violated a single law; rather they were advocating for human rights respect and working hard to help the people of Ethiopia eradicate poverty. Woyane knows this fact more than anyone else. However since by virtue of its nature, anyone who works for the betterment of the lives of people of Ethiopia is a treat for its very existence, Woyane wants to lock them up. Now it is time for us to stand together and work hard to show the real nature of Woyane to the world.
Brother Amsterdamer You arogant sickman. You need help.
Very sad news indeed. Woyanne thugs have not shame. It might be last desperate attempt from this mafia to keep Ethiopia Woyanne boot camp. Justice will prevail.
So What would say now? They are found guilty and serve in jail for the years to come.
No one escapes the law of the LAND.
Good Job EPRDF
For Cracking down on anti peace elements this terrorisst should be given severe punishement(capital punishment) to deter other wanabee criminals.
New year resolution make Addis Zero tolerant on anti-peace elements
To all woyanes anf followers,
What goes around comes around.Beseferut kuna mesefer ayikerim. It is just a question of time.We will come after each and every woyane for revenge.
No one is above of the law.
I think the time for Pardon already expired.
These two advocates have their own courage and conviction that probably carries them through the days and weeks, and their spirit and concious hopefully is more FREE than their caged existance.
For the concerned public, those who advocated on their behalf, prayed, the international organizations who stood by their side consistently through this ordeal, it is a blow on the face for Christmas eve.
One can probably find comfort in remembering, Prof. Alemayehu Gebremariam’s tribute to “the prisoners of conscience” the day they were sentenced to life. In his words,"Thank you great patriots". Some times it is not the details of the case, but it is expectation and and how human beings stand against adverse and may be unjust results.
The bigger charges are dropped and it means seven more years in Kality. The case will be prolonged as hopefully they will APPEAL it.
Please DON’T GIVE UP and there is a feeling that you know exactly what you are doing. This may look like DEFEAT, but may be it realy is NOT.
May both of you, your families and yours find comfort in the meaning of THE BIRTH OF HOPE, Christmas. It is a state of mind. Make the day yours and of many others, and lighten up.
Merry Christmas and happy new year to all.
