Ethiopia activists found guilty

BBC News

An Ethiopian court has convicted two anti-poverty activists of inciting violence after the elections in 2005.

Daniel Bekele, who works for ActionAid International, and local charity worker Netsanet Demissie could face up to 10 years in prison.

The men were acquitted of more serious charges of violating the constitution.

They were the last of more than 130 defendants charged in relation to the protests complaining of fraud in polls won by the prime minister's party.

ActionAid spokesman Tony Durham said the group were dismayed by the verdict.

The men will be sentenced on Wednesday.

Pardons

"Despite the lack of evidence proving their involvement in leadership and participation during the unrest, no evidence could be found to refute accusations of incitement," judge Mohammed Aminsani told the court, AFP news agency reports.

"As a result, the court has found them guilty on this respect."

Hundreds of thousands of people took part in demonstrations at alleged vote-rigging and some 193 people were killed.

Most of the dead were protesters, killed by security forces.

In August, the authorities pardoned more than 30 opposition members detained after the protest march two years ago.

Their release came a month after 38 senior opposition members were freed after signing a letter of pardon acknowledging a role in the disorder after the polls.

Why is it that, judges presiding over high profiled, cases are always “sick.” It shameful and embarrassing that the cases of Kinijit leaders, Tamara, Eseye and brothers, Daneil and Nestanet have been postponed Fifty Nine times all together.

The real justice will be on Zenawi and his henchmen who are creating havoc in the whole Horn of Africa. Zenawi and Co. will face justice for massacring innocent civilians in Gambella, Awassa, Addis Ababa, Ogaden, Mogadishu etc etc. The crime dossier of Zenawi and CO. is becoming big and fat. Human right agencies throughout the world are documenting genocide, rape, village burning, hanging etc etc all over the regions.

It is obvious; we cannot expect something different from the kangaroo court. You cannot expect eagle from the snake’s egg, and if there is anybody who expected something different, that must be someone who never new is the true nature of Woyane.

Woyane has proved its outrageous dictatorship time and time again. These two innocent brave men have not violated a single law; rather they were advocating for human rights respect and working hard to help the people of Ethiopia eradicate poverty. Woyane knows this fact more than anyone else. However since by virtue of its nature, anyone who works for the betterment of the lives of people of Ethiopia is a treat for its very existence, Woyane wants to lock them up. Now it is time for us to stand together and work hard to show the real nature of Woyane to the world.

Very sad news indeed. Woyanne thugs have not shame. It might be last desperate attempt from this mafia to keep Ethiopia Woyanne boot camp. Justice will prevail.
