Ethiopia - Amhara and Dedbit among Top 50 Microfinance Institutions

Ethiopia - Amhara Credit and Savings Institution and Dedebit Credit and Savings Institution among Top 50 Microfinance Institutions

Two Microfinance Institutions from Ethiopia are among the Top 50 Microfinance Institutions in the world according to a report by Forbes magazine. Amhara Credit and Savings Institution ranks sixth in the world and Dedebit Credit and Savings Institution ranks 31st in the world.

With 537,000 borrowers and another 225,000 savers (as of December 2006), Amhara Credit & Savings Institution in Ethiopia is one of Africa's largest microfinanciers. On overhead it consumes only 5 cents of every net dollar lent (that's after interest costs are subtracted).

It keeps staff costs low and is frugal on such expenses as electricity. These microlending organizations have low default rates. The share of Amhara's loans in default or more than 30 days late on interest and principal payments, as of year-end 2006, was 1.5%.

These Institutions were chosen from a field of 641 micro-credit providers. To qualify, the institutions must have made available their audited financials and must have passed review by a Forbes panel of advisers.

According to Forbes, The rank is based on the size of their gross loan portfolio; efficiency, which considers operating expense and the cost per borrower as a percent of the gross national income per capita of their country of operation; risk, which looks at the quality of their loan portfolios, measured as the percent of the portfolio at risk greater than 30 days; and return, which is measured as a combination of return on equity and return on assets. Each category is equally weighted for an institution's overall ranking.

If gurages' were allowed to have a microfinancing institution as that of the Amhara and Tigres',they could have achived even more given that they are good with money. But thanks to the FECKING TPLF regime,we are grouped in a region where most of the inhabitants never saw any kind of currency. This is social apprhension at it's best.

Before you get into conclusion be aware of your soroundings. for your information the microfinacing is opeating in nations and nationalities. The Amharas Microfinacing outperfromed the world. Are you aware of competency?

Lion,

Why don't you clean your mind from the Ethnic sickness you are suffering from?

You said Guragee. I say Ethiopians. If you don't agree with me about which guragee are you talking about? As far as the siltes concern, they already voted in the referendum not to be part of the guragee zone and also not to be called as guragee while their language is more close to Amharic than any languagigna from the guragee groups. Or are you talking about Sodo, 7 bete and etc.

Please clean your mind from this shit idea. We all look the same naturally. We don't need to be told about our differences.

i'm sure you have no idea what is going on inside the so called Guragee. There are big differences than similarities.

Good Job Amhara Credit employees!

Hiruy: good points but be kind to the person. When a man is sick, you do not insult him why he is sick, rather you give me a remedy. Hiruy, in your last statement I think this is what you wan to say: There are big similarities than differences.

Bravo Amhara!

Dedebit Credit and Savings Institution was established before the Amhara Credit and Savings Institution.
Next time the Oromia Credit ...will be the first in the world.

BTW is that "Amhara" or "Amara"???

[It's spelled "Amhara" on Forbes.com]

This news is pleasant and encouraging.

What is Dedebit and who are they?

Is the Amhara S&L genuine? Amharas have been the sole losers among all having lost land, houses and cash under the current and the regime that precedes it.

Congratulation Amhara S & L, and Dedebit S & L.

This is it. That's what we need organizations like this Savings Institution so people can borrow money for short use and paid back with only minimum interest.

I know the Dedebit crdit unoin is doing well interms of given loan to needy borrower.

EPRDF will take the credit for all these activities. Yeha

After reading your comment and others here, I remembered a joke that I heard long time ago. I think it mimics us very well. It goes like this: God dug holes in hell for all countries and he placed guards for each hole except Ethiopia. An observer asked God why there is no guard for Ethiopia. God answered, there is no need to waste any guard for Ethiopia; if one Ethiopian tries to climb out of the hole, another Ethiopian from the hole will pull him down.:D:D:D

Comment from: lion-maned-maverick [Visitor],
What are you crying about man? I think you can learn something good from HOPE here is his/her beautiful wording to make most of us laugh and at the sometime think twice. Here is what HOPE {visitor said “God dug holes in hell for all countries and he placed guards for each hole except Ethiopia. An observer asked God why there is no guard for Ethiopia. God answered, there is no need to waste any guard for Ethiopia; if one Ethiopian tries to climb out of the hole, and another Ethiopian from the hole will pull him down”.

Lion-maned-Maverick,
This is the part where you fit-in “God answered, there is no need to waste any guard for Ethiopia; if one Ethiopian tries to climb out of the hole, and another Ethiopian from the hole will pull him down”.

I hope you read it and understand it will and come back to your since LION-Maned-Maverick. Any good progress for Ethiopian regardless of an ethnic names used for institution should make us all feel proud. If you are suffering from the name AMHARA, I will pray for you. It’s just a name used not the ethnic AMHARA. If you are not familiar with the AMHARA ethnic, I suggest you travel there to the AMHARA state and see how beautiful and caring people they are. After you find out how lovely, kind the people truly are you’ll change your mind and wish you where from that ethnic. {all ET are beautiful on my world} take care.

HOPE, thanks again. Keep sharing your jokings in the future fellow country person.

Do this mean Amhara and Tigre are doing well? The Amhara/Tigre farmer if not worse, is just as poor as he was during the derg time. Still He is still living in his mud hut with rugs to wear and without a shoe on his feet. Is this not done to calme down Amhara opposition? The Amhara credit the tigre credit and the oromo credit et cetera. The disease of dividing Ethiopia into ethnic groups is taking roots and fanned by foreigners too. These foreign presses are playing dirty politics.

True, the one and half million shaleka stole should could have been invested anywhere in the world to help CUD. Shaleka has invested it on himself and his master hailu shawel. what CUDites dont know is that investing in Ethiopia is good; it doesnt mean supporting the government. Money is power.

And what does CUD has to do with Amhara, it is a multinational party.

I was especially surprised when I see farmer MILLIONAIRES from Oromya region,in award last week.Hey guys there is a real change going on in Ethiopia. We should be part of it or atleast be proud of it.

I believe the only difference is in food type and the person interest!!! Beans is different from pea, teff from sorghum, maize from dagusa barley from guaya etc as a result persons who love the food are different according to their interest but we humans are from one God so we are one people I would like to say Ethiopian Credit! because I went Oromia to check is that they really hate us? And the owner of the restaurant is an Oromo but his restaurant said GONDAR MIGIBBET I ate three times a day I went again another restaurant it say BHIRDAR migib bet GONDERBER, GOJAM BER,DEBRETABOR,Wollo and etc Still our people are living with harmony and affection Just the problem is from you immigrants and officials who you fell different. In Amhara there are many Oromo people living with us; Gondar, Bahirdar and other universities are full of Oromo students and other tribes. So WE shall call Ethiopian Credit and Savings progress.

Competitions between states and localities makes our country grow, economically, social development, infrastructure building, capacity building etc. Those of you who speaks of ethnic differences and so on, every time something positive is reported in different part of regionals of our country, are embarrassingly incompetent, short sited, absolutely ignorant to the fact of a federation system, for which we have been crying and craving fore, ever since I was growing up and remember. You gain power and wealth by virtues of hard work and the skills as well as educational back ground to succeeds, what ever success is to each individual person.

Just shut up and follow the lead of my region (Amharas) and excel together to the best of our ability and build our beautiful Ethiopia.

So again try to see the big image. That is actually what the power holders need u to think and talk. Dear Ras Ali: yes, at his time I agree 100% with what you said. In this case we are in the same footing, my fellow Ethiopian. If my memories serves me correctly, your last comment was very derogatory and repulsive directed at and towards a certain ethnic Ethiopians and therefore, admittedly upset about it.
Dear Ras Ali, both you and I very well know, the history of our beloved country stands besides you and me, proving that Ethiopia is blessed with almost eighty beautiful ethnic Ethiopians and a home of many religious and phases, for as long as you and I remember it, and therefore we are all beautiful Ethiopians with great deal of pride for what we are and the ancient history of our beloved Ethiopia and its ancient civilization. Having these many ethnic group living in one nation with the same blood line and as an Ethiopian is, a gift from GOD and ALAH, with which, we should be embracing it all. Be it Christians, Muslims etc is not a dividing line for us Ethiopians but a unity that is so grateful to all of us Ethiopians. Religion is something personal, between us, GOD and ALAH that we believe in, not meant to divide us and or any one else or to refute our nationality, Ethiopiawenet, otherwise it will be against the teaching of Jesus and Nebiu Muhammad. The rest of our dids is to be judged by him only, our creator, GOD, ALAH.

I am very grateful and delighted to your response. If many of our Ethiopian brothers and sisters were to disagree to agree, just like you and I did, we will not have all this argument with no solution.
Again, I thank you very much for the opportunity you have given me, to explain my self and may GOD, ALAH bless us all and our mutual beautiful land of ancient Ethiopia.
Good by for now!!

What I don't understand is why the few non-blonde hair, non-green eye ('derek') racists predominately from Semen Shewa, Adwa, Welega or Nakfa put us to their 10th century mud mentality. The majority of Ethiopians (Amhara, Oromo, Tigre, Gurage, etc) are tired of your sillyness.

for the record, it is next to impossible to find a gurage that wouldn't be happy if Amhara or Tigre rules over the world because that means the rest of us ie Oromo, Gurage, will also benefit. As to the diversity within the Gurage family, why should it be a big deal because the same applies to the Tigre, Oromo, Amhara, etc

110v Vistor, for your info....

Its called Amhara maicro financing instiute, cos its in the Amhara region, there are other such institutes in the other regions too.

Its an idea that started in Bangladesh to help finance poor people with small business (specialy in the rural areas) so they can strengthen their small business organizations.

It has changed the lives of millions worldwide.

Best wishes to the other micro institutes in Ethiopia.
