UN Says Exchange Of Gunfire On Eritrea-Ethiopia Border - AFP

ADDIS ABABA (AFP)--
The U.N. said Thursday Eritrean and Ethiopian soldiers facing off along their disputed border exchanged gunshots Wednesday.

In a statement, the U.N. Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea said that its Indian battalion posted on the border heard an exchange of fire in the early hours of Wednesday.

"UNMEE expresses concern about this firing incident between Ethiopia and Eritrea and is calling on both parties to show maximum restraint," the statement said.

Some 200,000 troops are deployed along the border, fueling international fears of a new flare-up after the failure of a mediation between the two foes.

Ethiopia denies report
Press Release from Ministry of Foreign Affairs

A border panel was dissolved a month ago with Ethiopia refusing to recognize a ruling that granted Eritrea a flashpoint border town.

The two Horn of Africa neighbors already fought a bitter war between 1998 and 2000 that left an estimated 70,000 dead.

Eritrea's Information Ministry accused Ethiopia of launching a small scale attack.

"In continuation of its ongoing provocations against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Eritrea, the TPLF regime (Ethiopia) has unleashed a relatively small scale attack," a statement said.

It said the attack targeted Eritrean forces tasked with patrolling the border area and that it "met with utter failure."

The Ethiopian government flatly denied Eritrea's accusations and said it hadn't carried out any hostile military operation along the border.

"This is simply an outrageous accusation by Eritrea. Ethiopia has declared that it is not going to start any war or organize any form of provocation," said Bereket Simon, spokesman for Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.

"The government in Asmara, it seems, is trying to hide the internal situation to the outside world by accusing us on the international stage," he added.

"There has been no attack from Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government is not interested in any provocative actions," Bereket added.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that an incident took place but returned the accusation, blaming Eritrea.

"There was an incident, it is true. But the incident is of Eritrea's making which is being looked into. It is possible that it may have been a result of an accidental encounter between the reconnaissance missions of the two parties," the ministry said in a statement.

The two regimes would like to continue to engage thier respective captive population on both sides of the border in suspense. It is in both regime’s interest to talk about war than peace, democracy, liberty and freedom. If there is peace, both people would start asking for thier rights which both regimes are not ready to do. We as a people should not give any attention to the non-existent war between two undemocratic regimes. We must focus on democracy, freedom and human right. We as a people shouldn’t fall on thier relentless propoganda to deflect attention from real issues. Both are liers.

“Eritrea’s Information Ministry accused Ethiopia of launching a small scale attack"Eritrea

Accusing like that is always Shabia tatic. As we well know when shabia was taking Badme and other localiies, was blaming on Ethiopia actually as if the war been started by Ethiopia.

If the war started which is sounded like, it will be the end of the Eritrean gangs in Asnara. It will be a sucidal attempt for Shabia really.

Long live our national armed forces.Indeed Ethiopia forever. yeha

Mr. Bellew, from your pagan name I conclude
that you are one of those Shoa Amhara tribalist. Insulting the great PM doesnt help you at all. As an Oromo and rich bussinessman I expect the PM to protect our property from the likes, like you who lure arround propogating hate and destruction in the name of Ethiopia. Once I made a mistake and was demonstrating with the CUD liers and traitors but now I reliaze where my bread is baked.
Let us say Sayonara, Aufidehzen, Sayonara to the deffunct CUD. I advice them to join their comrade in Zimbuabwe. What Ethiopia needs is peace and stability. PEACE UP!!!!!

Eritrea a poor nation, uses 50 % of its meager GDP to maintain an army disproportionate to any perceived threat. History shows that such a large GDP spending will lead to downfall of governments, as the army by nature ties up able bodied young people occupied in idle activities, with zero contribution to the economy.

The Asmara gang are obviously are not interested about the welfare of Eritreans. They just want to stay in power longer.

Sure way to do this is continue to cry foul about the border issue, so no resolution could be arrived at. Because a border resolution means the army could turn its guns against the gangsters.

This again is nothing more than crying foul, reminding its army not to think about internal issues, but only to concentrate about the perceived threat. As the saying goes people deserve the government they have, and Eritreans certainly desereve the Asmara gang, because that is all they are capable of producing. Didn’t they worship Italians for 60 years?

Let us be patient and celebrate 2008 in peace. I am not aware of this news and I don’t believe it’s true. Eritrea knows will going to war with ET this time will be the end of its military rulings. ET will be patient and hold back from any attack. ET is focused on strengthen its economy and educational system. Although ET will become on the top if the next war breaks up, it will slow down our economy during the war therefore patient is our tool to build our nation.
