Ethiopia - VOA Adds Amharic Morning Show
Washington, D.C., March 3, 2008 - The Voice of America's (VOA) Amharic Service has launched a new morning radio show, offering an additional half-hour of up-to-the-minute news and information to millions of VOA listeners throughout Ethiopia.
The new morning show features on-the-ground news reports, the latest U.S. and world news, cultural highlights, and in-depth coverage of social, political and economic issues directly affecting Ethiopians.
"We're always striving to meet the growing needs of our audience," said VOA Amharic Service Chief David Arnold. "We want to reach the widest possible audience, particularly in the rural areas where listenership has peaked," he added.
The morning show airs live, Monday-Friday at 0300 UTC (6:00 a.m. local) via shortwave. In addition, VOA Amharic airs a one-hour evening show at 1800 UTC (9:00 p.m. local), seven days a week. Both programs are available live and on demand at www.VOANews.com/horn.
VOA's Horn of Africa Service broadcasts 12 hours a week, in the Amharic, Afan Oromo and Tigrigna languages. More than 11 percent of Ethiopia's 76.5 million people tune in to VOA Amharic weekly.
The Voice of America, which first went on the air in 1942, is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors. VOA broadcasts more than 1,250 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming every week to an estimated worldwide audience of more than 115 million people. Those who cried to cut short the evening show, shall i say, eat your heart out! I think u would better use your Reverse Psycology.Well, who knows it might be like the daily meal we the masses dont get to eat. Three times a day.
if this morining program is also part or continuation of hatred propaganda of evening program. that is another nonsense radio
.Now we ethiopians need radio which unified ur people and gives us postive ideas to our people.
We are bored to listen bad news about our country every time.
Anyways things are going to be changed soo
More than 11 percent of Ethiopia’s 76.5 million people tune in to VOA Amharic weekly Just to show you that you are minority
Who cares about Addisu or solomon as well as Tizta!
no time for that!
Agartuu Bilisummaa Oromummaa,
What is this got to do with being minority or majority. OMG!! I know people can be dumb but not this much. Hey moron, open your eyes and read the article. It says 11 percent listen to VOA amharic, but it didn’t say only 11 percent speak the language. And also, 11 percent probably represent every one who has radio in Ethiopia. But please don’t try to propagate your hate on others using some simple and unrelated things. I can only tell two things about you, either you are so moron that you don’t know how to read or the education system has failed you. You have to choose one. My men, in our time if you can just think twice you are almost a genius. Please don’t let your ignorance run your life like your mouth. Ideate!!!!!
It is well known that VOA Amharic service is totally in the hands of Amhara chauvinists. We should petition the US government that these chauvinists are spreading tribalism in Ethiopia.
As other commentarors indicated VOA is serving only those who are against Ethiopia.
VOA’s role as outlet of reliable source of information is only history. It is a propaganda media of one people of Ethiopia and CUD.
By politicizing the situation in Ethiopia, focussing on that People and party, VOA proved to stand and engage in a divissive propaganda.
I am afraid it will only skyrocketing the hatred and marginaliztion of that people. It is my sincere wish that nagative division of Ethiopians may not happen.
My message to all Ethiopians: Let us not become victim of our enemies both within and without. Let us more unite and stop division alongside nagative tribal aspect and work to develop our country. In today’s Ethiopia, no complex of inferiority or superiority. We are all equal, brothers and sisters and people of one nation.
The journalists who running the voice of America Amharic services are member of Kinijit. Therefore, whether they have an extra program or less program it won’t changed anything in terms of getting information.
VOA amharic service is the stupid station and should be shut it down. Its not good for our country the mazing economical development because as Janet pointed out they are bunch of loser feudal chauvinisim… Yeha
American’s will laugh at u who??? what//kkkkkk i dont think they understand ur back-ward thinking . amharic language is all about comunication
God bless America!!!!!!
We need VOE not VOA. Brain washing!
VERY GOOD NEWS, voa and German radios are the only hope the we have back home.i bet weyane will still try to jam it.
Agartuu Bilisummaa Oromummaa:
do you mean that people dont listen to amharic news or voa?
stop the division, i bet you are not oromo. you are just trying to create more gap between the oromos and the rest of the tribes. we already have big gaps created by weyane, we do not nee another one.
I would like to thank the U.S. tax payers for enabling the Ethiopian people to connect to the world.
Melesa & his Gashajagrewoch don’t feel shame when they tell us VOA listners are hate monger. They must unerstand that this extra pogam is a big blow to their solicitation to thwart the struggle of the peace loving people around the world.
this is a message to those who are against the freedom of press and expression - there will be more information and radio broadcasts that can over come the jamming of the chinese who are against the people since they are stealing from the people with tplf - we should expose the evils of the china.
Did you say 76 million people in Ethiopia tune to VOA? I dont think so, the Amharic service of the VOA has become propaganda agent of the CUD. The number of people tuning in has dramatically reduced, me and the friends I have don listen to it. They decided to join the CUD extremist group and former dergists to fight the EPRDF. No wonder why they are complaining their station is repeatedly jammed.
