Prime Minister Meles Zenawi met and held discussion with His Holiness Pope Shinoda III of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark on Saturday at his office.

The Pop during the discussion mentioned that the long-standing religious ties between Egypt and Ethiopia dates back to 16 centuries.

The Pope expressed his commitment to further scale up the historical relation of the countries.

Expressing his contentment over the visit of Pope Shinoda III, Prime Minister Meles said the Ethiopian government would play its role to deepen the relation of the two sisterly countries.

The Coptic Church of Alexandria used to send Patriarchs to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church until 1951 E.C when the first Ethiopian patriarch was appointed.

Last month the Russian Orthodox church leader in diaspora passed away, but he maintained to bridge the eighty years old animosity with the Russian orthodox mother church. This became reality with the help of President PUTIN. It is high time that the son of Tigray, Melese, play the same role to heal the Ethiopian orthodox church division.
May the Almighty God give wisdom and courage to the stake holders.

Surprising!!
"Holiness Pope Shinoda III of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark".
Hey, there is no pope in the Orthodox Church. The head of the the Alexandria church is a Patriarch but not a pope. There is only one Pope in the world "Pope Benedict" the Pope of the whole Christian Church especially for the Catholic Church. In fact he is the representative of the true Church (Super natural institution) founded by Saint Peter who received this mission from our lord Jesus Christ. So his Holiness " Shinoda III " is a patriarch not a Pope.
Have a good Sunday,

It is good to hear the visit of His Holiness Pope Shinoda III of Alexandria to Ethiopia. I hope he will advise our religious leaders to solve their internal differences by discussion and to love each other to be a good model to the people of Ethiopia.

I hope, His Holiness -- The spiritual leader of Egypt's 10.5m Coptic Christians had a warmer and brotherly welcome in the land of his forefathers -- Ethiopia, than in London, where He on the 30 of March had been subject to a search by going through a metal detector at Heathrow Airport. This was the first time Pope Shenouda had been subject to such a search. It's shameful and disgusting!

Interesting!

I think Meles has felt that his life is in danger, that he wont live beyond the year 2008.

When people cannot handle stress anymore or they think it's time for them to go, they desperately become religious, going to churches to reduce their sins. Otherwise, since when meles the criminal butcher talks to an abune, unless the abune himself is his type, sinister?

Every Ethiopian who claims to be a follower of the Orthodox Church should ask why we were forced to have so many holidays, which was also prohibiting us from doing any meaningful productive work. Any one who have access to the web could make a research
and may find out that The Ethiopian orthodox church is the only church in the world full of many holidays. Can it be the work of Egyptian leaders through their pops holding us our hands not to use the river Nile? Hummmm who knows….

The end of Ortodox superiority in Ethiopia is coming soon. This church is responsible for the past crimes made by the kings against poor and help less Ethiopian people. The majority of Muslims, Catolics, Protestants, Juishs and the other traditional religon followers were the victims of the past rigims of the so called " Ye cristian deset " by oppressing the vast majority of the none Ortodox followers. Down with Aba paulos ( tegadallay paulos ).

Dear Amba Aregawi,
I would like to correct your misunderstanding of the EOC.EOC does not have an unnecessary holidays as you are trying to portray. The Holidays which we celebrates as a national holiday's are the same holidays that are celebrated by other churches like Christmas, Good Friday, Easter and the likes. No one prevented any body from going to work during non national holidays.Belivers celebrate the other many holidays as they like to do so. It is not a waste of time to glorify and praise God. It requires a great deal of determination and blessing to praise God since the devil tries restlessly to prevent us from doing so. For your information Ethiopia was one of the four great civilizations in the world together with Rome, Persia and china during the time when orthodox Christianity was the only religion of the country. Do you get my drift? He who tries hard with out the blessing of God will never get satisfied. When we deny the existence of God he who opens the sky and gives us the rain, shines the sun to warm the plants and blessed the work of our hands and fills our home with joy and peace we will ripe the fruit of our sins as we have been getting it for so many years now. Lets the Almighty God opens our heart and mined to see the truth.

Sami,
have you have ever visited Tigray? if so what did you observed? if you don't then let me explain something for you.

You asked me if there is any (Teff)in Tigray? yes indeed there is Teff production Tigray. Tigray soil produced about 60% of Teff. So there is a lots of Teff in Tigray besides others.

Please don't mix up Tigray with the completely dried out Eritrean soil. Yes I can tell you right now Eritrea has nothing useful soil exccept dry land and sand only. There is nothing you could produced out of Eritrea but its good place for war because its mountainous location. That is why shabeya survived on its 30 years of gurila fighting with Mengistu......Yeha

There are some jerks that don't differentiate right from wrong. EPRDF You endured 17 years of hardship and invited the so called opposition to have a say on their country's affairs. But look what happened, they faltered, got tired, runaway to their safety. Because any struggle requires struggle, but our timid educated opposition like Dagmawi don't get it: all they do is complain day in day out. Wake up people, Meles never gets tired: because he tolerated the hardships of struggle for 17 freaking years so bravely and defeated every negative attitude to wards minorities so effectively. A relapse of Dergist is history in Ethiopia now and will stay the same for ever.

Yeha the economist of beggar power Ethiopia:

Let's just leave Ethiopia aside for now, and talk about Tigrai. Can you tell me where teff in Tigrai grows. In Eritrea, go to BaHri and you will learn about teff and coffee, although it is not abundant enough to meet our demand, for now.

About what we Eritreans could produce, I know you are in denial state, pretending nothing is being produced in Warsay Yikealo project all over the country, forgetting other resources of ElabeEd and others that already existed. To name few: Sugar cane, wheat, barley, corn, mashela, banana, and other vegetables, besides gold, silver, and fish products in your dreamland of Red Sea, not to mention salt that your midget Meles and your country men from Tigrai lack, making him suffer from creatinism, due to deficiency of iodine.

I'm glad you didn't deny the importance of Sahel, your school of military science who is increasingly becoming your worst nightmare to your looting and begging empire.

This topic is about your dictator Meles talking to a UFO Orthodox church pope, in his last confession
before he leaves this earth, after he made all the crimes against innocent people of the Horn of Africa.
It's ironic to call your spiritual leader of your covert armed struggle a funny dictator, just because he refused to be subjugated to terrorist Americans who wanted to dictate this World in their terms.

Ante dedeb, if you know killing, it is in Ethiopia, where the university students and innocent demonstrators are killed unprovoked, killing means, burning Somali, Gambella, and Oromo villages, just because they wanted to be recognized for self-determination that you proclaimed when you took power, with the help of our "mustached" man whom you call dictator now, for convenience.

Negeru gin, if you can understand Amharic, your written language, there is a saying and it goes, "Wusha bebelabet yichohal." I don't blame you if you resonate and parrot terrorist Americans by calling President Isaias, a "dictator" for they are the ones who put your food on the table, clothes on your back, and roof on your head. You are worthless and lifeless beggar without American wheat, and we will see howlong you will survive in dependency!

I like to clean the mess about " POPE Bendict being the only pope in the World" Historicaly, There were only five places i in the world, where the bishops were ordainted and they are Alexandria,Rome, Jersulam, Nechea and one another country. Those country, they had a POPE, That is reason why Alexandrian Patriache he called POPE SHENOUDA. Eventhough they have the same authority with Ethiopean Patriache, Abune Paulos is not called Pope. In our Orthodox Church we beleive that the head of our church is Christ unlike the Catholic church which says the ROME's POPE. In fact historicaly the Rome's POPE had an equal authority with Alexandrian POPE before everything messed up.

My respect for Prime Minister Meles is multiplied seeing him receive the Patriarches by showing the atmost respect for them like shown in the pictures (bowing when shaking their hands). The patriarches are the church fathers who represent God on earth. I saw a picture of the last king of Ethiopia getting his hand kissed by the abunas and I was always feeling bad about it.

Thank you and God bless you, Prime Minister, for showing how every good child of God should behave no matter what their position is.

Dear Orthodox,
Let me help you
Here are the fifth Patriarch:
1,Patriarch of Rome,
2,Patriarch of Antioch
3. Patriarch of Alexandria
4. Patriarch of Jerusalem
5. Patriarch of Constantinople
The very fact that you have to know is The Roman Catholic Church is the only true church and the head of this true Church is of course Christ but He gave this authority (power) to Peter the apostle. So the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church is the only true Pope in the world for the whole Christian churches. All the others patriarchs (what you call them popes) are just symboles or simply false popes. That is why since the very foundation of the Church, the catholic (The Universal) Church is so strong and going forward with out any kind of divisions.
Have a good day,

I had the joy of meeting Pope Shinuda III at Pan African Christan Leadership Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya in 1976. He is a man of great integrity and commitment. His stance on apartheid was unwavering.

One of the most crucial regional injustices that need His Holiness' attention is the prevalence of poverty in Ethiopia, which is mainly attributed to the lack of rational, at least equitable utilization of the Nile River for irrigation and construction of dams. It is interesting that the Egyptian government menaces African riparian states every time they want to use the water resources in a productive manner. Besides, Egypt built one of the world's largest artificial lakes using the Nile River some 40-50 years ago. I believe, the Holiness and Ethiopian Orthodox Church should mediate with the Egyptian government regarding this matter. Further, Ethiopia must do something to deter the loss of thousand of metric tons of fertile soil to its detriment. As we know, about 86% of the water emanates from the Ethiopian highlands. Nile beneficiaries, Sudan and Egypt should pay some nominal royalty by way of compensation for Ethiopia's loss. This could be in the form of petrol or gas since Ethiopia does not seem to have its own any time soon. I think it is timely and appropriate to raise this issue nowthat Egypt is leaning more toward the African Union.

It should be understood that this is simply meant in view of sustainable regaional peace and reconciliation in light of the current situation.

God Bless Ethiopia, Egypt and Africa.

First of all It's from the catholic Church that all the hundreds of division arise.OUr orthodox Tewahdo church did not divide at all. Thanks for bringing the the five cities.
Historicaly, the Patriarches of those cityes had equall athority. POPE of Rome was never
the leader of other Patriaches.Thats something you brought later.Saint Peter founded the Rome Church. However, that doesnot
make the Rome POPE the leader of all the
churches in the world. Saint Peter was the founder of the syrian church also but that did not mean the sayrian patriarch is the leader of all the other church. That's illogical.

Gashem,
I love the catholic church the same as I love my own church, for all churches that believe 'God came to us as Jesus Christ and died for us and saved us from our sins' belongs to the true church of Christ. It is not a completely bad thing that we have various sects of our faith. Competetion is a good thing among siblings. Healthy sibling rivalry makes us strong and weak.

But, your claim that the catholic church remains undivided is not true. All the protestand sects including the church of England are offshoots of the catholic church. And the catholic church looks strong for a long time because it was based in Europe and human civilization was centered there during the middle ages and the modern era. That helped the catholic church financially as well as with political support from Europe's powerful empires.

Amzing, I was looking through the comments from everybody carefully and I could not find what I wanted. The argument should not be whether somebody is a pope or patriarch or whether you are orthodox or catholic. The main issue is that whether you are saved(have eternal life) or not. Read JOhn 3:16 in the BIBLE and you will find how God has prepared the way to heaven."For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE. Please note that God says "whoever believes" is granted ,by grace an everlasting life. If you spend a couple of minutes and read romans 10:9-11 ,6:23 you will be blessed abundantly. Do not forget to read 1 John 5:11-12 "And this is the testimony that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in in HIS SON...". "His Son" refers to Jesus Christ. May God enlighten you to understand his ways.

What a day for us Ethiopians to see our leader bowing to our Patriarchs. Eventhough most of the comments hurt my feelings I am not ashamed but felt strong, proud and happy for being an Ethiopian Coptic Orthodox. Whatever your motives may be, shame on you all for insulting my religion. Most of the comments are vague, they lack a substance called knowledge and display an ignorance in abudance .
First of all whether you like it or not, there is a general agreement that Ethiopia is in the middle of Muslim and Pagan states, so based on this fact Ethiopia is called an Island of Christianity. Another reason is the manifestation of Christianity in Ethiopia and its long history of existance, resisting foreign invaders and inside obstacles related to political, religious and ethinic strives. It's also because of the fact that, we Ethiopians even accepted Christianity before everybody on the face of this Earth. God said to Israelites, "Are you not my children as Ethiopians are?" this is an example to you guys trying to be believers and Christians? Nor we needed or seek a Catholic Missionary or an Arab Prophet to come and preach in the name of God or Allah, we had already found God way before anybody started living. That's why Ethiopians are unique and an example to the rest of the world that Ethiopia is the land of the God's not _______.
Unlike many religions Ethiopian Coptic Orthodox did not came to Africa as a guest or as a refugee, but found its roots in the black continent from the black people Ethiopians. That's why Orthodoxy stood out strong in Ehtiopians society without the help of Romans or Arab States. Today's geneation will continue to transfer the love of God inherited from previous generations to the future to adhere to Ethiopian Coptic Orthodox Church. No Catholic Missionary or Protestant Pastor will have an effect on our religion, because they lack a base among the Ethiopian society.
Finally in this period of fasting and forgiveness I hope God will listen to my prayer to fill the BIG VACUUM inside your hearts.
