Star Alliance CEO Jaan Albrecht told ATWOnline that Ethiopian airlines is not discussing membership with the Alliance. Last June, Airline Business quoted Ethiopian Airlines chief executive Girma Wake as saying "a new codeshare with Lufthansa, signed in June 2007, brings it "a step nearer" to joining Star. But he adds: "We have yet to start the process" of applying for membership. "It's not something we've decided but we are considering," he says. "We would like to do that [join Star]. We would like to do it in steps."
EgyptAir officially became Star's 21st member on Friday, joining South African Airways which is already a Star Alliance member. Kenya Airways is an Associate Member of Sky Team. That leaves Ethiopian Airlines and Royal Maroc Airlines as the only major airlines in Africa outside the three major airline alliances.

Should Ethiopian Airlines join Star Alliance? Have Your Say
The longer term plan at ET are not clear to me. I just don’t understand why ET is dragging its feet on joining Star. And with the new leases of the 757s at a higher rate, the delay in the 787 deliveries, higher oil prices, its operating costs are increasing. Good news is everyone else in on the same boat (pun intended ;-)
Anyway, I hope ET would act fast. Oh BTW, for those keeping track, ET was also supposed to break ground on a hotel at Bole in Dec 2007. I guess there is a very slight delay with that as well.
ONLY GOD KNOWS……
most of Shokaka Egypt air destinations are Arabs’ cities and towns whereas EAL diverse destinations covering main cities and frequent flights worldwide, quality before quantity.
i think Girma Wake should be considered future PM or FM.
Egypt makes morethan 4 billion dollars a year in the form of aid from the US and other Arab countries because of its strategic alliance with Israel and the Arab world. That money is being used to distablize Ethiopia and build a louzy airline called Egypt Air.
ET does not meet the standards to join the STAR alliance. Be realistic!and don’t get your ego full you!
[Could you care to be more specific? What are the ’standards’ ET does not meet? ]
We supposed to have more air crafts than every country, since we been num#1 governing in Africa, righy?.
I am not sure why everyone is fascinated with StarAlliance!
That is not the only Alliance in the world. It is already crowded with a couple of African Airlines as members. Let’s stop the herd mentality.
There are alternatives out there, such as OneWorld Alliance with members such as American Airlines, British Airways, Cathy Pacific, Japan Airlines, Qantas from Australia and others. The other Global Alliance is the Sky Team with members such as Delta Airlines, KLM, Air France, Korean; Northwest with other smaller partners such Kenyan Airways.
So there are choices it is not *A which should dictate membership but it should be the other way around it is up to ETHIOPIAN to choose who to join!
