Former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Tamrat Layne was released from Kaliti prison on Friday, December 19, 2008 after spending 12 years behind bars.

“Tamrat showed good behavior while imprisoned and will be released from jail before completing his term,” ETV on Thursday, December 18, 2008 quoted justice ministry officials as saying.
Tamrat told Capital he has no wish of involving in the politics of the country.

He further noted that he is starting his life as new despite all the hustles he went through.
The former premier was sentenced to 18 years in jail in 2000 after the Supreme Court found him guilty on three counts of corruption and abuse of power.

Born in 1955, Tamrat served his country from June 6, 1991 to August 22, 1995, as Prime Minister before his arrest. He has also led the guerilla fighting to overthrow the Derg for more than a decade before the EPRDF’s taking control.

Tamrat was accused of involvement in an illegal 16 million-dollar deal with a firm to export Ethiopian textile products.
He was also accused of using his position to export 1,000 tones of state-owned coffee through a bogus firm and of using another company to obtain a tender for the supply of construction equipment worth 13 million dollars.

Tamrat served as prime minister of the then transitional government for four years from 1991 and later as deputy prime minister and defense minister until he was sacked and arrested in 1996.
He was dismissed from government in 1996 and was convicted by the Federal Supreme Court four years later.
