The Housing Development Project of the Addis Ababa City Administration has transferred more than 15,000 condominium houses last Tuesday through raffle.
This fourth distribution round involves condominiums located at Jomo sites 1 and 2 around Mekanisa.
The winners were selected from the 385,900 applicants using a computerized lottery system. The draw excluded those who owned houses as well as those who declined to receive condos during previous draws.
The housing project launched across the city has helped to create employment for youth and construction professionals besides curbing the vast shortage of houses in the metropolis.
The city has also announced that it is constructing 72,221 condominium houses in the current budget year, out of which 43,000 are new construction sites. It plans to transfer houses that are at least 80% completed in three months time.
The Ministry of Works and Urban Development (MoWUD) and the city government are also planning to construct 20-storey and 30-storey buildings respectively that would be used as a middle-class condominium houses.
It is expected that the buildings would be completed in seven years. Each block would range from 400 to 500 million birr.
In a bid to stave off the severe housing shortage facing low and middle income residents in the metropolis, the Arkebe Ouqubayled provisional city administration launched the constructions of 30,729 houses in 2005/06. Over 20,000 houses were subsequently completed and are in the transfer process or are already transferred to residents of Addis Ababa through the City Housing Agency.
In 2006/07, the caretaker administration that took over office, led by Berhane Deressa, followed in Arkebe’s footsteps and initiated the construction of a further 33,000 houses on 150hct. This was part of the national housing construction strategy aimed at building 61,000 houses in 36 towns of the country.
The construction of the first condominiums in Addis Ababa was undertaken with the technical support of the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ).
MoWUD has in 2007/08 launched the construction of 83,000 houses in 59 towns countrywide, including towns in Gambela, Benishangul-Gumuz, Somali and Afar regional states.
In 2006/07 and 2007/08, the federal government envisaged constructing 144,000 condominium houses.
