Ethiopia plans to double earnings from livestock exports
ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia plans to more than double earnings from livestock exports to $85 million in 2009 by curbing illegal trade and opening new marketing centres, a government official said on Friday.
The Horn of Africa country sold 297,662 heads of livestock for $40 million in 2008 but hopes to raise this by exporting 429,244 livestock for $85 million this year, according to Berhe Igziabher, head of the Animal and Plant Health Regulatory Body.

That is good.
I think these guys are reading Nazret. It seems this sector was suggested by us as good projects to gain foreign currency.
…how by forcing the hearders to kill their livestock?
What about livelihood of Ethiopian pastoralist in remot south and East ?
shut your face confused shabia
Howcome!! the majority of livestock export are from the southern part oromia. and many of the farmers are lossing their livestock through drought and livestock disease. This the direct result of neglect and the area is the most underdeveloped in that Empire.
On other hand the Borana breed is on the verge of exteniction as a result of unbalanced export versus replacment stock and genetic dilution. the country has no breeding strategy!!
So how are u going to achieve it?? you are planning for next year but what about the drastic effect you are bringing in the long term?? I know your answer u dont care, because u are not on that chair then!! and you dont care because it do not involve your people!!! if it do you could have consider its effect in the long term!!
“We know that Djibouti, .., has become a livestock exporter and we also know that 60 percent of livestock being exported by Somalia are those taken from Ethiopia through contraband trade,” Berhe said.
You know!Realy? And who is responsible for this loss? The diaspora, right?
What were you doing when this happens? Aha! Your army was doing this business in somalia?
You don’t feel any shame when you tell us this?
First build the trust of the citizens. Can you do that? Your article 39 didn’t give any fruit.Am I right? Prove me wrong.
Berae Wolede, kikikikikikiki. Got it, Lam Woledech ayedelem, berae wolede.
it is $133 per a head of livestock. why is it so cheap? or somebody explain to me.
Cameles meat and milk are the future golden busines. The arabs are meat eating people and camel in ethiopia have to be on export list to help the poor nomades in Harar and other PROVINCES.
. . .because of the quality and price of our livestocks, the demand will be increased and im sure our earnings will be increased too. . .
. . .this is GOOD NEWS!!!
Oh my God. the per capita price is very low. You can imagine about 135 $ per animal? Don’t they worth more than that even at local market at home?
You want to prevent goats from crossing the border between Somalia and Ethiopia. Good luck!.
The livestock will simply be sold at the closest place that pays the highest.
Just ensure that, and it will all be yours.
It is also hard for me to believe that Ethiopia has only 150,000 camels, while one census that I remember put Somali-owned camels at 6 million heads.
Ogadenis are one of the Somali clans that are known to keep large herds. Therefore, I doubt if any made any credible estimation.
