Ethiopia - Coca Cola expects to fizzle back soon
BY NAMRUD BERHANE
A week after Coca Cola plant in Ethiopia announced that it had temporarily closed its plant, East African Bottling Share Company (EABSC) said yesterday that its financial issues were being sorted out and that it would resume operation soon. However, when that will be has not clearly been indicated.
A statement issued by the Coca Cola producer said that the Ethiopian government has intervened to assist the expected resumption of production.
Again, the statement did not elaborate on what the government intervention constituted.
“EABSC is also working on a distribution plan that will allow us to distribute our products to the end user as quickly as the production resumes,” EABSC said.
Last week, the company announced that it was temporarily suspending its operations due to lack of crown cork and shortage of foreign currency to import it.
EABSC said at the time that the fate of 150,000 people was in jeopardy, and that it had been forced to make its employees take leave until it sorted out the case.
Prior to announcing the suspension of operations, EABSC had seen the plummeting of its operation to below 25 percent of production capacity.
