Ethiopia ranks 129th in Networked Readiness Index
nazret.com - Ethiopia's performance in the latest Global Technology Report is a very disappointing one, as the country continuously lags behind the rest of the world in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by a wide margin. The latest survey from the World Economic Forum, puts Ethiopia at 129th out of 134 countries in Networked Readiness Index. According to the report, Ethiopia, with a population of 79.1 million people, has 0.4 internet users per 100 population as of 2007 and just 1.5 mobile subscribers per 100 population, one of the lowest mobile usage per capita anywhere in the world. In the report, Ethiopia is ranked 134th out of 134 countries in the number of mobile subscribers. The only bright spot in the report is that Ethiopia ranks 26th in "Burden of government regulation", which measures compliance with administrative requirements (permits, regulations, reporting) issued by the government in the country.
Just this month, another report released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), puts Ethiopia at 147th in Global IT Development Index. Despite the lackluster performance of Ethiopia's telecom monopoly, the country refuses to liberalize the telecom sector.
In readiness survey, Ethiopia’s science and math education is ranked 104th and the quality of its education system is ranked 88th.
The report ranks Denmark and Sweden as first and second, followed by the US, Singapore and Switzerland.
Ethiopia not only is behind in telecommunication ,but in almost everything.unless the country develops a viable and vibrant democratic system it will stay behind for ever and ever.poor Ethiopia!!!!
This is not just an opinion, but fact.
Ethiopia also ranked 134th out of 134 countries in the number of mobile phone subscribers and in the Press Freedom Index, Ethiopia sags at the bottom as 133rd, next to Zimbabwe.
Also ranked 120th in infrastructure and 117th in market environment.
18 years under Woyane rule and keep suffering in many sectors crucial to development. No light at the end of the tunnel under Woyane.
I will give you one example on how to manipulate statistics. This is a true story and it happened in Israel. One of the university in Israel was refusing to admitt felashas or any black. In 2005 they took one felasha and in 2006 they took two felashas and guess what the university reported that the number of blacks or felashas students increased in 100% percent because the number increased from one student in 2005 to to two students in 2006 which is a 100% increase. When the university officials were asked about the racism at the university, they said that they don`t discriminate and as a proof they showed the statistics. The same applies for this crap which says that Ethiopia ranked 129th in network readiness index.
It’s painful to see now that everybody act surprised when the courageous Ethiopian intellectual warning the danger of our beloved country education system for the pass 18yrs. Over time most of these intellectual has been silenced in an evil ways…now, what we see is Ethiopian educational opportunities at home and abroad has been highjack by ethnic gangsters…. What a shame history!!!!
Ethiopian educational system was not perfect …but, instead of improving it shame on you all who destroyed the entire population with ethnically infested propaganda…
Shame on you all…
Here is the light of our true Ethiopian intellectual input long, long time ago!!!
what a coincident, the first three comments with the same concept, may by the same person whose country is not even on the list, ha,ha,ha,ha,ha, needless to say who you are. no ethiopian ever claimed being technologically advanced, but we know we will get there. eat your rotten shabian heart out Tulu the Oromo wannabe,

Common guys we are better than this kind of news and discussions. Our Government should concentrate in one thing at a time and make a difference in it. The new gadgets will be used by a few manipulators and looters of the country wealth, not the mass population across the country.
We rather see our Government and private investors of Ethiopians focus on accelerating farming production by using water irrigation and modern farming tools, open or encourage private people to open different kind of fertilizers and cement factories and the most importantly steel factory a key to our progress in every sector of the country economy including climate change. What I mean is if we have steel factory our people especially in the country side can use metal things for their farming tools instead of cutting woods and in major cities people can use electricity to cook their food by using electrical stencils instead of from wood charcoal. The availability of cheap price for Cement and steels can accelerate communities to organize and build small dams in their local areas for drinking water for people and cattle and vegetable irrigations. If all the above were provided by the Government and private sectors now and lay out for the next generation of our people to prosperous then the next generation will make all the high tech at home and allow our people to buy them for use.
Lets finish all the DAMS under constructions right now and make sure they are ready for use as intended and earn hard currency from exporting power to our neighbor countries and re-invest the income to finish the rest of our GOD GIVEN rivers building Dams and have slogan says, all Ethiopian waters for all Ethiopian people not for outsiders anymore.
Yes government haters are correct that Ethiopia was the best in everything before this government and even used to send food to the outside world during disaster lol
can any hater remind me i just forgot the time when Ethiopia sent thousends of metric tones of food aid to the US or was it to the UK under Mengestu lol
You see it was better if Amhara rule Ethiopia lol
The solution to come out from this kind of dismal ranking is to liberalize the telecom sector and invite multiple investors to create competition. TPLF will never do that because they would like to milk every sector until they run out of their last stinky breath. Time after time Ethiopia’s statuses in different economic and development indexes are depressing. This will be the same circumstance for years to come unless the country achieved quick transformation in to genuine free market economy and democratic system. The tyrant TPLF thugs are the very obstacles blocking this progress.
Here are some of the astounding records of our dear leaders –
• Ethiopia is among the top 20 nations in infant mortality
• Ethiopia is among the top 10 nations in adult illiteracy
• top 10 in inflation
• top 10 in worst environmental record
• top 20 in lowest GDP/capita
I may run out of time before this list of wretchedness is over!
No worries Ethiopia is at least better than the PM’s defacto country (Artera)
Blessing to our dear leaders!!!
FUNNY, you sure are funny. The pseudo-new Ethiopian TPLF thug. Stop deafening us with your hollow cry.
Instead of calling out on Shabia, your scapegoat for all your failings argue with facts and reasons.
It is your action that speaks louder and your action is translated into these bad ranking and dragging the country to the bottom.
FYI, I am a proud and loyal Ethiopian Oromo unlike you who betrayed mother Ethiopia to serve Shabia. God Bless Ethiopia.
All types of dizzying statistical datas wereb issued by the Tribal Junta and its cheerleaders and sponsors. The fate of the nation is obvious to any one of us. The malignant cancer that is killing Ethiopia should be removed surgically and killed and burned radio activally.
As long as the Aparthide system of governace is history, speaking of economic, social and political progress is meaningless.
Just few days ago…even some hateful diasporas were saying that although we are lagging behind on this sector, it would be a bad idea to liberalize this sector as most of our citizens would be outbid…as there is’t enough of us with the capital to invest and keep it local at the same time…
Now i would not be surprised to see some of them turn around and say IT IS TPLF’S FAULT, AND LIBRALIZING IT IS THE SOLUTION…
“As long as the Apartheid system of governace is (not) history, speaking of economic, social, and political progress is meaningless.” These Eritreans, we might hate them, we might insult them, we might fight them, but one thing is for sure, they are very precise and to the point. Look at everyone else jumping Aramba ena Kobbo, he sealed it with one true sentence.
Yes, the number one problem in Ethiopia is the “ethnic bantustan” imposed by this current regime. Its like a dagger stuck on our face. And for almost 18 years now we carry on with our lives, while the dagger is still STUCK in our face. The Afrikaner Booer Apartheid regime made South Africa a first rate power. Many pretty cities with sky skrapers, nice Universities/Hospitals, millions from neighboring nations streamed their to work in the mines, but the dagger of Apartheid was still stuck on the face of the people. Until it was removed in 1989. No more Siskie, Transkie, Bopupthoswana, etc etc. Until that day arrives in Ethiopia, you can forget anything else, it will just simply not stand.
instead of making correction TPLF leadership treats its critics like enemies.
World Economic Forum said Ethiopia is behind. Then the TPLF government canceled a conference that was supposed to be held with WEF….
What a mess!!!
I am really tired of this so called RANK. Can you give us a brake??
We know we are way backward regarding to technology and communication. Besides the gov’t is not willing to privatize the sector at least partially. I really don’t mind if the gov’t monopolize it as long as the they invest and improve this sector. The fact of the matter is,I didn’t see any progress in this sector so far and the gov’t doesn’t seem that much concerned either. Why??? Can somebody enlighten me? Thanks!!
ethiopia is cursed.i used to doubt it before, but i know for a fact now ,we’re cursed.only option left for us ethiopians is to go overseas and start a new life or strart an armed struggle and get rid of meles and that sibhat nega guy.Dont get me wrong about that meles guy being smart,he is smart, but he’s an evil genious. And it’s just obvious he’s the last thing ethiopia needs.I don’t much mind having a tigre presedent that cares about every ethiopian tribe and actually works for the county as whole !but meles gots to go.
I dont know why they didnt put ethiiopia 136 out of 134 countries.
The solution is simple. Liberalizing, liberalizing. But EPRDF does not like that do you know why if he does so people will be able to comunicate freely every where in the world,, blocking websites, controlling and spying others comunication would be hard. So has been seen on best interest of EPRDF like any other things
