Ethiopia - US warns citizens of security threat in three eastern cities
By Yohannes Anberbir
The US Embassy in Ethiopia has sent an email advising its citizens residing in Ethiopia not to travel to three cities bordering Somalia. Al Qaeda's recent message urging Somalis to force out their new president, partly owing to his ties with Ethiopia, prompted the American embassy to inform its citizens of a heightened state of alert in Dire Dawa, Harar and Jijiga, 510km, 530km and 630km east from Addis Ababa, respectively.
Al-Qaeda's chief, Osama bin Laden, urged Somali militants to overthrow the country's new president in a new Web audiotape posted last Thursday. On the same day, the US embassy advised US citizens to avoid traveling to the three border cities.
"American citizens who do travel and reside in these areas are advised to avoid public gatherings and public places, including hotels, and should avoid using public transportation and transportation hubs," the email sent to the citizens reads.
It also reminded all US citizens to remain very vigilant about unattended baggage or packages left at any location, including on public transportations.
Bin Laden's 11.5 minute audiotape was entirely focused on Somalia, the impoverished country in the Horn of Africa that has been in chaos for nearly two decades, torn apart by warlords and Islamic militant groups. In January, parliament elected President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, a moderate Islamist, in hopes that he would unify the country's factions.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was the first at the time to recognise the president who spent the first days of his rule at the 12th AU summit in Addis Ababa.
I am surprised how Bin Laden spent all his time (11 minutes) declaring war on Somali president and avoid anything negative about Ethiopia. Was he worried about prophet Mohamed’s advice that discourages muslims from attacking Ethiopia? I am just curious!
yes you are right it also amuse me very much there have never been an international level terror targating Ethiopia, there should be two things about it one is the one you said about the Prophets word warning never touch them unless they touch you abd also there is no religious discrimination in the country compartively speaking with other nations, but we have elements who tend to aspire towards that sort of radicalization, that is undeniable.
We know Al-Qaeta, Al-Shebab, and domestic terror like ONLF with the support of the terror sponsored State of Eritrea are working around the clock to create havoc inside Ethiopia. Therefore, I don’t see anything wrong with the U.S Embassy informing its citizens to be cautious in certain areas that might not be safe to travel. I wonder what Ethiopian officials have to say about this statement. I hope the Ethiopian government will rise up above and respond with heavy air strikes in Asmara and Sawa if and when any bomb exploding inside Ethiopia is linked with Eritrea. The statement from the U.S Embassy should be fully shared with Ethiopian citizens as well to prevent any major attack in public or private gathers in and around the cities listed by the embassy. May the LORD destroy our enemies and always shield Ethiopia/ns from all evils: AMEN.
AND THEY SAY “OUR MISSION IN SOMALIA WAS NOT SUCCEFULL”
If weyane had sent it’s army to Afghanistan, Binladen would have been dead long time ago.
Weyane was kicking some Alithad asss way back.
Lets hope the peace keep prevailing in Ethiopia, because for some reason the lunatic man is still silent about doing evil, but people need to be caucious regarding the Christian-Muslim Ethiopian brotherly relation. It could also mean they(the enemy are prepairing big). God save the nation and nationality.
This is just a fake warning to creative some sensational headline to gain what objective I don’t know.
Since when did you ever seen an american tourist with cameras strouling around the markets in those cities, probabaly long time ago, may be yonder years of previous century.
If you happen to go to eastern cities specially Jijiga and beyond, you will see an american but I guarantee you he/she will not be a tourist with a camera, it will most probably be a soldier with an M-16 rifle.
So I fail to understand the purpose of this so called travel warning, I am no political sceintist but sounds political spin to me!
wedi adi and Tigrains
congratulate your tigrain buddies in addis ababa for creating Ruwanda like scenarios in Ethiopia…inciting oromo against amara, somali against oromo..etc.(In Ruwanda it was the hate mongers media who encouraged the massacres)
It should not be a surprise for us since TPLF still follows the EPLF’s strategy of the early 1990s; divide and weaken Ethiopia untill Ethiopia is no longer a treat for Eritrean and Tigrain independence
People: watch ETV’s Oromo program and you will be shocked by the wide hate propaganda produced by TPLF cadres of ETV. Once Ethiopia is gone as a united nation we will see if Tigrai stand alone as a nation; I don’t think so..brace yourself for the influx of refugees from Tigrai heading to Etitrea, Amara, Sudan and so on.
TPLF never been pro-United Ethiopia; read their history
I am surprised, how non of you seem to worry about Ethiopia’s citizens around those three cities. Does that mean these three cities of our nation are already occupied or infested with anti Ethiopian factions? Does this not worry Ethiopian government as it brought worry to the U.S? Can Weyane take responsibility and accountability for getting involved in Somalia in the first place? Does Weyane/TPLF also anti Ethiopian care the danger Ethiopia is in? I bet Weyane/TPLF is going to concede these cities to ONLF and the so called OLF without what the people in that area want.
God help us

You are so stupid. Our war is with Somalia and Bin Laden/terrorists. Your idea of attacking ONLF or other neighbouring countries if….happens in the future, then….is negativity. You have a problem with somalia/Bin Laden/terrorist, then go after them, coward. Why blame somebody when in fact it has not happened yet. If u want air strike go to ToraBora. Dirty Minded
The reason why Bin Ladin did not mention Ethiopia in his message is that because he knows that he doesn’t need to as Ethiopians are already terrorized by their own ruling junta.
I guess he felt sorry for poor Ethiopians for what they have been through for the last 18 years of TPLF rule. He must have felt that Ethiopians need not be inflicted any more pain.
And why would he take responsibility when he knows Meles is equally capable of traumatizing and doing the same thing to his people.
It is nonsense stuff, period. He (bin Ladin)is nothing but a big loser. Why he cares about Somali business? I seriously doubt the authencity and/or intention of his message and reactions concocted by the TPLF regime.
TPLF now seeks attention from American tax payers in exchange for cash and military support. The faggot Arabs should be fighting in his filthy Saudi and Yemeni homelands and currupted leaders instead of engaging useless propaganda in far away places.
If need be, and without the help of useless and phony shabab, onlf and shabia dogs,Somali can deal decisevely agains anyone, including local recalcirant habeshas, who try to mistreat and violate their god-givent rigths and their history proves just that.
YES,as the Prophet said at the beginning
NO JIHAD against Ethiopia, the blessed land.
It was a promise from Prophet Mohammad.
No true moslem can claim a Jihad against the wishes of the Prophet.
That is the secret
UNLES THE DOMINATION OF HABASHA END IN ETHIOPIA THE WAR AND THE FREEDOM FIGHTING WILL CONTINIU THAT IS WHY OLF AND ONLF KEEP FIGHTING
Ethiopian Muslims and chrstians lived in peace and harmony for centuries. It will be very hard for Isayias and Al-queada to brake this bond. Let peace reign!
prophits said about bahere negash (eri)not neguse negest (eti)
tplf is a very dangerous terrorist group in africa and they kill and rape women.
Those evil elements may try hurting innocents at any time unless the government pays more attetion for security. Yeha
Yes it is important to follow the warning & fill a form at the USA Embassy upon arrival for your security. For me I have never done it.Excuse me,just upon arrival I just put my passport in the safe. Next day get my Kebele ID with the help of my family, put my"Sherit"& skull cap in Harar/Jijiga enjoy my vacation with the people who know me by my nick name.Harar & Jijiga?please!!who is going even to ask me my Name?Baloney!!!!.
Ethiopia has excellent time to launch an invasion of Eritrea when Eritrea is being antagonized with Israel and US. Now is the perfect time Ethiopia to make a move against Eritrea because the Eritrean military is demoralized, the public is fade up Shaebia rule and the country is economically in a bad shape to resist our forces especially if we go all out war in every directions with massive military force stronger than the first war with out any stop to wipe them out in a short period of time and secure the entire renegade province.
I am sure the world will stand by us particularly Israel, US, China and Russia we will not get any suctions from UN. By now the whole world knows what it means an Eritrea independent and the security of the Red Sea costal and Indian Ocean the busiest root all commercial ships around the world. Every countries except Middle Eastern they want to see Red Sea is under the hand of Ethiopia considering the Iranian influence in Eritrea, the Sudan situation and Somalia of Al quida influence and fighting in be half of terrorist Ben Laden.
Ethiopia strength militarily and economically will benefit to the whole world security in the Horn of Africa. But the question is can Meles Zenawi and Sebhat Nega the Eritrean agents do the right thing for the interest of Ethiopia?
