As far as I’m concerned, the difference of any God fearing Ethiopian to commit such crimes and go crazy…is simple…it’s called FORGETTING YOUR “CULTURE” & “IDENTITY"!
…end of story, don’t complicate it plz!
Wey Tigab!! good eKo newu enanteye!! min Aynet meaat newu to his Family.
Men, these little kids will bring some serious fall out for the rest of us Descent ethiopians in that area.
The problem of adapting a foreign culture in a society that is completely different from ours is not an easy business, especially for our youngsters. We come from a third world country with a completely different culture and values and we find ourselves in the middle of a completely different world. We think that everything we see around us belongs to us as it belongs to the indigenous people. We are overwhelmed and we try to act in the same way as the nationals of the country we live in, in other words, when we are in Rome we try to do what the Romans do, as the saying goes. The disappointment is great when we eventually discover that things are not as they look, and the reality is completely different.
Sometimes our people are forced to learn the hard way, that as foreigners we are outside the social and psychological makeup of the people we have adapted as our own people and the country we have chosen as our own country. Reacting to these realities, we might sometimes act irrationally, as this young Ethiopian most probably has done. The result as we see is ruining his life, his future and worst of all, his family.
The right thing I believe is to make the best of the chance given to us by the country and the people we live in and we live with. We have the obligation to love the country and the people and we have the responsibility to be law-abiding citizens.
Of course, some people have succeeded and will succeed in the future. However, these are the hardworking and the lucky ones. As foreigners, who we will always be, as long as we live outside our own country and our own roots, we should not have too many expectations to avoid big disappointments. This of course doesnot means that we should not do our best to succeed. Nevertheless, we should always try to be immune to disappointments and the difficulties of life in foreign lands.
If we do not reject the values of our ancestors and replace them with values that are skin-deep and foreign to us, I think that we will be able to stand firm on both legs, wherever we might be. Let us inherit to our children the God-fearing values of our ancestors. These Ethiopian values will be the shield that will protect all of us wherever we find ourselves. Let our young people be selective in what they will adapt from the culture and the way of life of the people they have to live with.
When we watch on you tube Ethiopian children and youngsters singing religious songs in the many Ethiopian churches all over the world and performing many other activities, I am sure that we all are proud of our young people and we are hopeful of our posterity.
Ethiopian families, Ethiopian communities and the leaders of Ethiopian Christians and Moslems in the diaspora, have a big responsibility. Our Ethiopian values and way of life are not backward as some might think. On the contrary, they are diachronically valuable and respectable. They will lead our young people and every Ethiopian alike through difficult times.
