Ethiopia's wealthy people are asked to register assets

Ethiopia - High earners asked to register assets

By Yohannes Anberbir

A series of legal measures by the Revenue and Customs Authority (RCuA) targeting the country’s high tax payers is playing heavily on the minds of the Ethiopian business community.

High earners were asked last week to register all of their businesses, fixed and movable assets. The authority targeted only 620 high tax payers listed at the top of a category that contains 13,000 businesses. The requested 620 tax payers are listed by the authority as main contributors to the country’s revenue, according to the department head of the high tax payer category, with 70 percent of the revenue being obtained through taxes collected from them

Ok, Yohannes,

Where and how are you getting these stories? Besides, you could have included this story with the other story you wrote regarding the finger prints because it kind of goes hand in hand. Anyways, this is all about accountability and glad to see the steps taking.

Hey Yohannes, could you tell us what number Meles Zenawi is ranked among the 620 wealthiest who have to register and will he register as well? And also are you telling us that all 13,000 businesses in Ethiopia are owned by just only 620 wealthy people? If so, time to distribute the wealth in Ethiopia…
Thanks, Z-Mike

This is a good action. In Ethiopia only govenment employees pays tax to a single cent. The government pay them after deducting the tax. Now the time has come every single cents is calculated and colledted from businees people.

. . .how “transparent” the collected taxes were ended in the right place?. . .

. . .i can say this is good move, “BUT". . .but i am not believe the corruption will end, instead the “bribery” will be rampant between these 620 top category and RCA alligators. . .mark my word!

as every body know most busisness in addis have two different books to show.
1. for inland revenue that shows loss
2. to banks with big profit to get loan

so i think this centralized thing might help

It’s not such a bad idea, but the question is, Is it going to be applied to all? We all know the answer to that is a Hell no.

This will not be applied to those investors that are members of the party, yet again giving them another advantage. EPRDF policies have always looked good on paper, but when it comes to actually implementing them that’s when the true color comes out.

Dear,PM Meles, as you know life expectancy for male in Ethiopia is 52 years, therefore, give and take you ain’t got that much time left. So,why not do something good we all can be proud of on the remainder of your time. Surprise me,MF

Too many businesses operate without tax, or charge customers tax (VAT) but never forward money to government. There can’t be any argument that needs to change for economy to grow. However, the tax amount has to make sense, and government can’t create a new tax and ask for paymnet from nine years ago.

This is a huge setup for daylight robbery. Let me see they want to finger print, and have all assets registered all under the excuse of collecting taxes:crazy: Good all you guys publish your bank statements and all the things you own, your home address and leave the door open so I can give you a good inventory of your belongings lol

These MF have some balls! Everytime they salp us we turn around and ask for another one. This shit has to end SOON!

The high earners are: 1. TPLF and its associate. 2.Melese and his wife (Azaba). 3.The HODAMS who kiss Melese’s a**. 4.People who facilitate bus. for Melese inside the country and outside of the country. 5.So and so…..If these people pay their due is fair if not give Melese banana.

I think it is not the lack of good law that enabled people evade taxes, but lack of good will from citizens and poor law enforcement. So we need both civic education and strong law enforcement.
