Ethiopia - High earners asked to register assets
By Yohannes Anberbir
A series of legal measures by the Revenue and Customs Authority (RCuA) targeting the country’s high tax payers is playing heavily on the minds of the Ethiopian business community.
High earners were asked last week to register all of their businesses, fixed and movable assets. The authority targeted only 620 high tax payers listed at the top of a category that contains 13,000 businesses. The requested 620 tax payers are listed by the authority as main contributors to the country’s revenue, according to the department head of the high tax payer category, with 70 percent of the revenue being obtained through taxes collected from them
Where and how are you getting these stories? Besides, you could have included this story with the other story you wrote regarding the finger prints because it kind of goes hand in hand. Anyways, this is all about accountability and glad to see the steps taking.
Hey Yohannes, could you tell us what number Meles Zenawi is ranked among the 620 wealthiest who have to register and will he register as well? And also are you telling us that all 13,000 businesses in Ethiopia are owned by just only 620 wealthy people? If so, time to distribute the wealth in Ethiopia…
melese and azeb says-
they are regestering their only asset, which of course books and some chat! ha ha! as Azeb mesfin once claimed.
by the way does EFFORT included in this high tax payer category? we all know EFFORT is tax exempted and for sure it is excluded.
Ok Start from the nekersas like EFORT.
This is a good action. In Ethiopia only govenment employees pays tax to a single cent. The government pay them after deducting the tax. Now the time has come every single cents is calculated and colledted from businees people.
. . .how “transparent” the collected taxes were ended in the right place?. . .
. . .i can say this is good move, “BUT". . .but i am not believe the corruption will end, instead the “bribery” will be rampant between these 620 top category and RCA alligators. . .mark my word!
as every body know most busisness in addis have two different books to show.
1. for inland revenue that shows loss
2. to banks with big profit to get loan
so i think this centralized thing might help
It’s not such a bad idea, but the question is, Is it going to be applied to all? We all know the answer to that is a Hell no.
This will not be applied to those investors that are members of the party, yet again giving them another advantage. EPRDF policies have always looked good on paper, but when it comes to actually implementing them that’s when the true color comes out.
Dear,PM Meles, as you know life expectancy for male in Ethiopia is 52 years, therefore, give and take you ain’t got that much time left. So,why not do something good we all can be proud of on the remainder of your time. Surprise me,MF
Too many businesses operate without tax, or charge customers tax (VAT) but never forward money to government. There can’t be any argument that needs to change for economy to grow. However, the tax amount has to make sense, and government can’t create a new tax and ask for paymnet from nine years ago.
The Woyane is showing it’s true colors, it is going to start confisicating property just like the derge.
This is a huge setup for daylight robbery. Let me see they want to finger print, and have all assets registered all under the excuse of collecting taxes Good all you guys publish your bank statements and all the things you own, your home address and leave the door open so I can give you a good inventory of your belongings lol
These MF have some balls! Everytime they salp us we turn around and ask for another one. This shit has to end SOON!
All of them belong to EFFORT. Aren’t they? No competitor to EFFORT to the end!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is an attempt ti cripple the minority Amhara, Gurage, Oromo, etc businesses since EFFORT and woyane affiliate businesses and individuals don’t pay tax
this one has some agenda behind it. the high earners are the looter weyanes, are they turning on each other or what?
ho ho mata new gudu
mata new gudu ye weyane gudu
The high earners are: 1. TPLF and its associate. 2.Melese and his wife (Azaba). 3.The HODAMS who kiss Melese’s a**. 4.People who facilitate bus. for Melese inside the country and outside of the country. 5.So and so…..If these people pay their due is fair if not give Melese banana.
I think it is not the lack of good law that enabled people evade taxes, but lack of good will from citizens and poor law enforcement. So we need both civic education and strong law enforcement.
Ok… so this is leading to what?
And z-MiKE, are you so knowledgable in the EPRDF/TPLF dealings or are you just blindly throwing your support behind what ever this govt does whith no inkling what so ever as to what it is about? You are always there in support no matter what. Are you an employee of the TPLF/Eprdf? If so we need to know. Thank you very much.
It is better being in comunism and socialisem where people know to inves or not!
They open arms and call you in to do business with you and then once you put all you egs in one place to make it work hard and get wealth then they come after you to disavantage you unless you are EPDRF member or Tigary ethnic!
Where is the fairness?
Z-Mike and likes jump up and down to support anything EPDRF passes since it is advantage for their party and family the rest of the citizens are not counted.
I want everyone to be accountable to income tax and fairly…
Those who are passing the airport custom weaving with out declaring just becuase their family or “ethnic associate” are at the airport are more succesfull than who are trying to do business legaly and could not compet in market since they are taxed to death. If all is equaly affecting the citizens I will be the first one to support any kind of tax that is reasonable and fair to all.
Baise court, Baise Military , Bias Police Biase government is what the issue is!
Free speech, free election, true democracya and unity!
I speak and stand for what I believe is good for Ethiopia. Therefore, I don’t stand for everything EPRDF/TPLF does. Nevertheless, I’ll support the government whenever I agree with and I’ll not support the government when I disagree.
Now, the question is: are you blindfolded by G-7 and you will continue to throw your insults or are you really trying to stand for the cause of Ethiopia and all Ethiopians to have lasting solutions? You see we can all support whomever we want to support however we all should have the same goals to put Ethiopia before us and before our personal inner-circle agendas. So, lets as reflect on it and agree to disagree but find common grounds to come up with solutions for the sake of Ethiopia and look forward not backward.
Z-mike I am glad you asked but no one knows Meles’s business ranking in the country and no one dare to ask because most of his looted money and his cronies money are shipped off shore working hard in Malaysia,
Mark my word! By know all money in domestic bank moved out and deposit abroad. This will eventually bankrupt the banks in Ethiopia. People start doing business with loan money and every profit is deposited outside the country. By the way Woyane is doing business with billions of dollars in and out of the country. How are they going to treat that or are they exempt. Taxing is government responsibility but the system of taxing should cover all businesses indiscriminately not only 620 out of 13000.
