First ever Maritime Training Institute in East Africa constructed in Ethiopia's Babogaya Lake, Bishoftu town at a cost of over seven million Birr was inaugurated on Saturday.

Inaugurating the institute, Chairperson of the Ethiopian Shipping Lines Share Company (ESLSC) Board of Directors, Getachew Belay said these days the global maritime industry has faced critical shortage of seafarers both in terms of quality and quantity.

ESLSC as ship operating company has also faced this crucial problem. He said the establishment of the institute has been found a crucial importance with a view to alleviating the problem by developing ratings with world class talent.

Besides building the capacity of the company, the institute would also provide mandatory and relevant training to sailing seafarers and those aspiring for the career at sea.

Getachew said the Ethiopian government has been providing the necessary support for the construction of the Maritime Training Institute.

The chairperson on the occasion urged the company to upgrade the institute to a higher maritime training academy level.

Speaking on his part Managing Director of ESLSC, Ambachew Abraha said the company has been playing a vital role in a bid to facilitating the import export trade of the country by providing reliable and competitive maritime transport.

The opening of the institute would enable the company to further enhance its services by training efficient seafarers, he said.

The courses offered at the institute are drawn up within the frame work provided by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW-95) code.

The institute comprises various facilities including classrooms, staffroom, workshop, library and various electronic acquirements, he said.

Meanwhile, some 48 Ethiopian seafarers also graduated on the occasion. The graduates presented practical demonstration of the training as part of the occasion.
