COP15

African Union threatens to scuttle a deal

African Union climate negotiator Meles Zenawi has sought Chinese and Indian backing if the African demands are not being taken seriously.

If Copenhagen is going to be about an agreement that simply rides roughshod over Africa, then we will try to scuttle it, and I think we have reasonable assurance we can scuttle it if our concerns are not addressed," says Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, who represents the African Union at the UN climate conference in Copenhagen, according to US government funded Voice of America.

According to Bloomberg, Meles had received assurances from Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in a telephone conversation earlier this week that China won’t sign any climate change agreement in Copenhagen unless African demands for compensation for the effects of global warming are met.

On emissions, lots of progress has been made, Meles says. According to AFP, his primary worry is about funding.

According to Voice of America, Meles would stop in Paris and London for talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown before heading to Copenhagen. Here, he would seek assurances that the offer pledged by European countries would be what he called "real money" and not an illusion.

Stop in Paris? what for?
maybe to pick up the latest lingerie for Azeb from those fancy stores in “Champs Elysee"?
Someone should remind him to save money till after the election - If ever he would loose this upcoming election there will not be a fat cow like the national coffer of ethiopia to draw money at ease and at will to buy gift to his Azeb

If anyone have a slightes doubt about this stopover being other than a shopping trip read more…

“In recent UN world hunger summit in Rome
Tunisia’s first lady and her bodyguards blocked traffic on roads leading to Via Condotti, a glamorous street of designer boutiques near the Spanish Steps. Rome daily Il Messaggero ran a photo of Leila Zine in front of luxury jewelry store Bulgari.

The images bolstered criticism that the summit called by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization is long on rhetoric and extravagance and short on solutions for the world’s 1 billion hungry.”

Now let see. while Azeb shop for more accessories at Champs Elysee,Melse will add more wardropes to his collection from Oxford street.

Meles is good at begging. All the African dictators know that to be true. Why nominate any one else when they have him who is an expert on begging. So, the dictators from all around the continent got to gether and asked him to do the begging at the summit in Copenhagen. The shameless person he has been through out his life, Meles, readily accepted the challenge.
Now that the western powers are not budging and not convinced to ride that ‘guilt ridden’ train of Meles they are saying, “Poor boy Meles, we understand you . We are sympathetic. But, please, get your house in order and don’t blame everything on Westerners and climate change".
Therefore, he appears to be taking the challenge seriously, that is why he is going to Paris and London to personally kneel down and cry for hand outs.

ONE THING EVERYBODY SHOULD KNOW IS;-
SIMPLY THE PRINCIPLES OF CARBON TRADING(EMISSION TRADING) IS:-A central authority (usually a governmental body) sets a limit or cap on the amount of a pollutant that can be emitted. Companies or other groups are issued emission permits and are required to hold an equivalent number of allowances (or credits) which represent the right to emit a specific amount. The total amount of allowances and credits cannot exceed the cap, limiting total emissions to that level. Companies that need to increase their emission allowance must buy credits from those who pollute less. The transfer of allowances is referred to as a trade. In effect, the buyer is paying a charge for polluting, while the seller is being rewarded for having reduced emissions by more than was needed. Thus, in theory, those who can reduce emissions most cheaply will do so, achieving the pollution reduction at the lowest cost to society.[1]

There are active trading programs in several air pollutants. For greenhouse gases the largest is the European Union Emission Trading Scheme.[2] In the United States there is a national market to reduce acid rain and several regional markets in nitrogen oxides.[3] Markets for other pollutants tend to be smaller and more localized.
AND NOW THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES ARE REQUESTING FOR THE CARBON CREDITS THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN FOR THE DEVELOPED ONES FOR CENTURIES.AND THE PERSON BEHIND THIS INOVATED IDEA IS PRIME MINISTER MELES ZENAWI.
AND EVERY ONE WHO IS ETHIOPIAN SHOULD PROUD OF THIS SMART GUY.
