Ethiopia grants pardon to former opposition leaders

Source: Xinhua

Ethiopia on Tuesday granted a pardon to 10 former leaders and members of the opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD), saying that they confirmed they would "respect the constitution and protect it from any unlawful act."

The defendants said they "took responsibility individually and collectively for their mutinous move against the constitutional order," said a statement from the Ministry of Justice.

The defendants "requested clemency from the people and the government of Ethiopia," said the statement.

It said the Ethiopian Pardon Board examined the request of the defendants thoroughly and considered the preconditions go well along with the rule of law.

The board presented a recommendation to the president based on the request of the 10 former leaders and members of CUD, it added.

The former leaders and members of CUD were imprisoned after the court passed verdict that they are found guilty of dismantling the national constitution through force, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, the statement said the recommendation presented to the president to lift a pardon earlier granted to four former CUD leaders and members.

It said the defendants "committed repeated crime and failed to respect their own preconditions when they requested clemency."

"They are found guilty of dismantling the national constitution through force with their cliques," the statement said.

Accordingly, the recommendation was approved to grant pardon to individuals, who go by the names

1.Eng. Abayu Ali Yimam

2. Fikre Woldeamlak Yismaw,

3. Mekcha Mengistu Yimer,

4. Col. Daniel Tessema Wube,

5. Zewdu Liyew Tegegn,

6. Hirut Kifle WoldeEyesus,

7. Fasika Taffa Deme,

8. Amsalu Kassa Tessema,

We are told,"They are found guilty of dismantling the national constitution through force with their cliques.”

We are praying to The Almighty to bring to justice meles and his cliques, who came to power after dismantling the constitution and who gave about one tenth of the country’s teritory away.

Aba-Jiffar [Visitor]!

“…It is time to give thanks to this government when it is due… …”

Benito Musoloni built so many roads in Ethiopia during the 5 years wars. Are we obligated to thank him?
Do you realy know the duties of a gov?

Let us hope these positive approches are long lasting and they all learn to play their games by the rules becuase that is the only way to go. That Birtukan woman should learn to use her head rather than her heart and controll her emotion. I don`t think she is a good politician. With that atitude she can do some other things in and around churches:-) Cheers!

Here you go,This tyrant is fooling the people of Ethiopia and the world. First his opossum (Bereket) information minister said, there are no political prisoners, and now he is pardoning 10 political prisoners. What a joke? Is this strategy to help his adapted son Flip flap (Lidetu/Kidet)?

This is a government that imprisons innocent people for no reason, then release them in the name of a pardon, and expect to be “congrtulated” for its action. This is a dispicable act not an act of a decent government.

This is just an act to show the West and to prepare his election so that he doesn’t get resistance from the public.

Aba-jifar true, if meles and his commrades were captured by Mengistu they would have been killed. Meles is a cobfident man, the party EPRDF is better organised and effective and cabb deal with its enemies in a systematic way.

Meles is a great leader, I hate those pagans who have no fear of God, they are the ones that are preaching hate and prejudice against the EPRDF, this government has done a lot to Ethiopia, the whole country is now developing in a faster way. May God help Meles and his party. I will continue to vote for meles and EPRDF so as those ragtag killers wont come to power again.

Aba-Jifar-thanks -it was really a good observation.

This is not a pardon this is a prisoner swap. How can the same board say these people should be free and these people should be in prison? Having a select group of people deciding if people should be in jail on or not based on opinion and not fact or evidence is the true dismantling of the “constitution". Where is the due process? Where is the jurisprudence?
