Ethiopia grants pardon to former opposition leaders

Ethiopia on Tuesday granted a pardon to 10 former leaders and members of the opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD), saying that they confirmed they would "respect the constitution and protect it from any unlawful act."
The defendants said they "took responsibility individually and collectively for their mutinous move against the constitutional order," said a statement from the Ministry of Justice.
The defendants "requested clemency from the people and the government of Ethiopia," said the statement.
It said the Ethiopian Pardon Board examined the request of the defendants thoroughly and considered the preconditions go well along with the rule of law.
The board presented a recommendation to the president based on the request of the 10 former leaders and members of CUD, it added.
The former leaders and members of CUD were imprisoned after the court passed verdict that they are found guilty of dismantling the national constitution through force, according to the statement.
Meanwhile, the statement said the recommendation presented to the president to lift a pardon earlier granted to four former CUD leaders and members.
It said the defendants "committed repeated crime and failed to respect their own preconditions when they requested clemency."
"They are found guilty of dismantling the national constitution through force with their cliques," the statement said.
Accordingly, the recommendation was approved to grant pardon to individuals, who go by the names

3. Mekcha Mengistu Yimer,
4. Col. Daniel Tessema Wube,
5. Zewdu Liyew Tegegn,
6. Hirut Kifle WoldeEyesus,

8. Amsalu Kassa Tessema,
9. Alemayehu Tamire Kassa
and
10. Lijalem Takele Minda

it good gesture,all these pardoned are from Addis Abeba area.how about others jailed in different jail holes in different regione of the country and i think this pardon is the beginnig of it's kind.

Let us hope these positive approches are long lasting and they all learn to play their games by the rules becuase that is the only way to go. That Birtukan woman should learn to use her head rather than her heart and controll her emotion. I don`t think she is a good politician. This is not a pardon this is a prisoner swap. How can the same board say these people should be free and these people should be in prison? Having a select group of people deciding if people should be in jail on or not based on opinion and not fact or evidence is the true dismantling of the "constitution". Where is the due process?
