The French Ambassador last night bestowed the Order of Merit and Legion of Honor on two Ethiopian women at a ceremony held at the embassy. Tigist Yima and Sinidu Araya received the honors from John Christoph, the French ambassador to Ethiopia.
Tigist Yilma, who is owner and managing editor of the English weekly Capital Newspaper, was awarded the Order of Merit and Sinidu Araya Selassie, who is the founder and manager of a local NGO Vision of Africa, was awarded the Legion of Honor.
The Order of Merit, which was established by the Charles de Gaulle in 1963, and the Legion of Honor, which was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 are usually awarded to French nationals with great accomplishments. They are also awarded to foreign nationals, who have special ties with France and to those who have excelled in their respective careers and endeavors upon the recommendation of the various French embassies located around the world to a committee.
Former French ambassador to Ethiopia Stephan Gompertz, and his wife were present for the occasion along with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church Patriarch, Abune Paulos and friends and families of the honorees.
