I think Ato Haile Gerima does the same thing he accuse Europeans portrial Africa in a dark perspective.
His attitude towards Africa is dipicted in his movies more vividly than even some of Europeans. The only difference I see is he is angry at his misfortune to make money out of it. His anger at former Ethiopian leaders and his manufuctured anger at white people is abhoring.
His movies are shaped by his view of tv in the 60's than the reality. He use a different camera as soon as he moves to Euro/American even during slavery time as in the case of sankofa. You don't see anything colorful about Africa in his movies all you see is a moving dark very feeble people with cameras running over their head.
Wearing the same director style cloths and a hat and having a little girl alot younger than he is as wife does make him look like a a house negro slave bad-mouthing his master.
There is room for improvement but he has alot to go to be Ethiopian/African and a genuine film-maker than elite from America running through his camera over Africans head and dipicting his traumatic childhood impression.
Selling movies is not being sellout, reaching a much larger and wider viewer is the main purpose of making a movie, the victory belongs to those who don't compromise their souls in search of it.
Ethiopia has alot of great stories to tell and he can do alot of good in his excellent movie making skills if he wish.

He is some hero.Very nice interview: “SUSPENDED”/ not here or there. There is truly such experience (it may not necessarily be good). His choice of WORD in a spontaneous conversation was to the point.

Films as “WEAPONS”! better than guns?...When they have the Steven Spilbergs and Haile Gerimas, possible.

Hiwot, dont just dwell in negative thought. We cant get this kind of guy out of hundered people like you who dont do nothing but talk rubish. This person accouplish much further than most ETHIOPIAN males. We need to encourage him to do more by giving him recognition for his work. Dont freack out when the dark side of your country is told. There are a lot bad and good thing that can be told about Ethiopia. As an artist you can choose any area and work on it. I dont see any problem with his work. bravo bro. Well done. Hiwot go and cry in your bedroom that is where your achivement belong!

To Mr. Haile Gerima, author of Beneath the Lion’s gaze, Ms. Maaza Mengiste and/or those who can contact either or both persons:

It would be very interesting if Haile and Maaza coordinate, collaborate and pull their resources, talent and contacts and make a MASTER PIECE OUT OF THE BOOK. That book has just about every thing in it. It is beyond politics; and its messages are powerfully positive in a challenging and brutal environment. The chances to raise money for it and turn it into a movie may not take as long as 14 years for several reasons.

This guy is a real artist! He has his own way to express himself, and touches a sensitive cord in most of us.

Of course, if you know ethiopian recent history, there are a lot of approximations. But i don't think ethiopians are the audience looked upon by it.

It shows really well the craziness of that generation who wanted to build a whole country based on a book or two.

Hiwot
You sound like one of those Lonely souls who are so bitter about their own personal misfortunes and are spreading their misery through degrading and insulting others. What did this man do to deserve a slur like yours. He is not only an accomplished Film Maker, but a Kind Loving and caring Family Man. For you to talk this kind of Rubbish, tells more about your own Dark side than the man telling our story. Our Dark Past. Our Present struggles... Unless you are one of those Blood suckers who killed our Brothers and sisters in cold blood, you dare not even say what you are saying. Keep his personl life out of his story telling. Keep your personal life also to yourself. If you really want to critic his work, then go ahead and tell it like you know .. (I hope you do...) Otherwise, the only conclusion I would make from your posting here is that you really really need to either find a Young good looking Dike like yourself and get Busy. B###H !
