Eritrea's Daniel Teklehaimanot wins 3rd African Title in Cycling; Ethiopia finished third
Daniel Teklehaimanot of Eritrea is a triple champion of African Cycling
Eritrea has proved its prowess in African cycling once again by winning the individual and team event at the 5th African Cycling Championships, in Kigali Rwanda.
Eritrea's Daniel Teklehaimanot has won his third gold medal at the African Cycling Championships to win the event ahead of fellow Eritrean Meron Russom and Namibian Dan Craven.
Teklehaimanot made it a double for Eritrea by also winning the individual time trial in 44:37, followed by Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg of South Africa (51 seconds behind) and Azzedine Lagab of Algeria, 2:24 behind the winner. Adrien Niyonshuti of Rwanda came fourth, also at 2:24 behind, while Craven finished fifth, 2:32 behind the winner.
Eritrea beat the favourites South Africa into second place, while Ethiopia came third.
Eritrea completed the 40km event in a time of 54 minutes 12 seconds to finish 2:12 ahead of South Africa, while Ethiopia finished 3:08 behind the winners in third place.
Algeria came fourth, 3:14 behind the winners, while Namibia came fifth, 3:44 behind the winners.
Teklehaimanot (22 years) ran the second half of 2010 as stagiares at Cervélo. This is one of the runners recruited by the UCI Center in Aigle and this season won a test of the Coupe de Ville Saguenay Nations in Canada and was second in the Berner Rundfahrt in Germany.
In 2009 he won two stages of the Tour of Eritrea and finished sixth overall in the Tour de l'Avenir. And in 2008 was stagiares with Amore & Vita and won the title Under 23 Championship cri Africa.
Eritrea has secured a place for the 2012 Olympics in London participating in cycling.
Tigabu Gebremariam and Stefanos Gebreselassie of Ethiopia finished 3rd and 4th place. Overall Ethiopia's Team finished third after Eritrea and South Africa.
