I rather focus on the solution and want to share an encouraging side of the story from my experience. While I am sharing this, I want to encourage all of you to be part of the solution.
Last year, there were several disturbing eye witness reports on Aljazeera cable news regarding tortured and murdered Ethiopian girls in different Arab nations, Lebanon in particular. One Sunday morning, following the report of degradation and abuse of our girls angered and united an Ethiopian church in USA for action. The Ethiopian Evangelical church in Washington DC decided to do something in rescuing those abused and tortured women in Beirut. A year ago our congregation, which is more than 2000 was briefed by documentary, researchers and different people who have first hand experience of Beirut.

On one hand, all the report was such painful and frustrating. On the other hand, it angered the congregation, made our church to decide to rescue life. After such disturbing report, every congregant donated generously to fight the injustice. After few weeks, the church was able to secure a legal status and opened a center in Beirut to rescue those vulnerable girls. As its short term, the center is providing shelter, meal, trainings, psychological and spiritual counseling. In the long term, the center will hire excellent legal professionals and will fight the injustice against our vulnerable Ethiopian women in the court of law of the land. Currently, there are more than 100 women in the program. A full time stuff is already hired. The church will continue its rescuing support in more dimension as the situation permits.

For those of you who need more information, Ethiopian Evangelical Church of DC is fully supported by its Ethiopian church members living in the metro Washington DC area. In addition to the center in Beirut, the church also has an Orphanage and a school in Debre Zeyit. There used to be a feeding center in Nairobi, Kenya.
If you too are angered by the degradation of our precious women and if you too believe actions speak louder than words, you have very few choices, may be one or two: Either go ahead and rescue someone by yourself or support those who are doing it like the church in DC. A research on African media led me to this site. First let me introduce myself as Nigerian. Secondly, I am deeply dissappointed by most of the comments on this site. If this is true, then how can you call yourselves christians when you are puffed up with pride and arrogance? given your recent history you should be more humble than arrogant. Even the british, that had power over large expanse of land, are not that arrogant. Then why you? Even people of rome, descendants of romans that conquered on three continents, are not that arrogant. Then why you? Even people of greece, descendants of greeks that have major influence on western culture, are not that arrogant. Then why you? I am not saying these things to belittle Ethiopia. I say these things because I want you to realize that just as ethiopians are special so are other groups of people of the world. Arrogance ultimately leads to war, humbleness leads to peace. But is it not Ethiopian job agencies that send these women abroad to work in less than favourable conditions? why do you allow your people to continue with these agencies? are you advising your people to avoid them? do they REALLY have to go to the middle east? what are you doing to bring them back? Maybe, Ethiopian airlines should sell discounted tickets for flights within Africa; so that you can learn more about other african cultures and peoples.

I never said that all Nigerians are in the drug business or specialists in cyber fraud. I am not so naïve as to put all Nigerians in one basket. Anywhere you look in the world, whether in Africa, Asia, Middle East or Americas, people are inherently good. This holds true for Nigerians too. The problem is that the bad apples are among the many good apples. These bad apples have a label and identity. Therefore, we should sometimes call them by name. If the problem lies with a Nigerian, we say it is a Nigerian who is involved, and if the problem is with an Ethiopian woman, we say it is an Ethiopian woman etc, and we cannot say that it is somebody else. If your problem is why point a finger at all, that is some thing else, and I cannot help there.

As I write this piece, hundreds of Sudanese black children are being sold as slaves by the Sudanese government and thousands of Ethiopian girls are being processed like a raw meat to be shipped to the Arab world.

Therefore, my question to you, Mr. Solo, the historian (I mean it from my heart you are a good historian), is do we Africans have good history? Do the Germans have good history? Do the Romans have good history? Do the Greeks have good history? Do the British have good history? Do the Russians, the Chinese, the Japanese, and the rest of the other countries such as the Vietnamese, the Burmese, and the Philippines have good histories?

In my judgment, history is the number one enemy of the world: history is a terrorist; history is a killer. How many millions and millions of people died and still dying in the name of history, the enemy of humanity? History does not teach peace; history teaches hostility, revenge, and history does not bring countries together; it rather separates theme apart. For example, history has separated Eritrea from Ethiopia, and it is on the process of separating southern Sudan from the main land of Sudan. History has separated South Korea from North Korea, Georgia from Russia, East Timor from Indonesia, and who knows, it may also separate Oromia and Ogaden from Ethiopia. And when this happens, many Ethiopians who believe in unity are going to shed their precious blood.

Generally, history teaches me who my enemies are rather than who my friends are; it teaches me the Italians, the Turkish, the Egyptians, the Sudanese, and the Somalis are my enemies; it teaches me who my old enemies were and who my present enemies are. History’s enmity does not end there: it comes to my living room, to my family and divides my family from me by telling my spouse she has come from a well-known family that has a good history, so she should not live with me, who has no history.

As an African man, history tells me that all whites are enemies of Africa, reminding me what whites have done to the Continent of Africa, my mother land. So, how can I judge history, bad or good, unifier or divider, avenger or peace maker?

Nigeria is my favourite country. My rich source of African literature. There is much written history in Nigerian. You mentioned about Benin, wow, actually after reading the African bible which is written a Nigerian writer. That book has opened my eyes about Africa.

Solo, in Ethiopia, they never thought any history about Africa. I have to be honest. Our people the most racist people on earth, may be out of ignorance. While I was in school, I did not even hear about other country in Africa. I remember one time in my high school life, one man told us he came from Kenya. I was so curious. That is my first time I heard about Kenya. This was long before the internet days anyways.

We have been thought about France, Britiian, America, Russia, Spain, Germany,... but nothing. No Indian history, no chinese history no other African history at all.

I thought Affican history myself now. The Benin history is exotic. I forgot the name of the woman who fought colonizers with un paralled heroic deeds. I have learnt about Mali which so rich history with so much artistic work.

I must tell you, yes, our history was glorious, but now there are no men in Ethiopia. As you see the women are everywhere on sale. In Kenya, South Africa, all over Arab countrries. The men are engaged in selling Ethiopian women. I have seen this my self by my naked eyes. Ethiopians men, men who grew up in addis ababa are fully engaged in Ethiopian women selling business, not just in Africa, but the export them to every corner of the world. What do they get/? It is work for them. They earn money by selling their sisters.

Unfortunately, Ethiopians will never accept and address the problem. We would rather blame other people.

A few months ago, Obang went to Japan to help out Ethiopian refugees who were stuck there in refugee camps for many years. By the way, Obang is the only Ethiopian person who does what he says. The only person who go out to help Ethiopians is Obang. The Almariam, others just talk, talk endlessly.

When Obang went there, he could not believe how Ethoiopians were treated. But the truth is such abuse of Ethiopians is everywhere in the world. My first question to Obang was why in the first place we go to Japan from Ethiopia? Japan is a poor country compared to Ethiopia in terms of natural resources? They are only rich by working hard, they do not have resources like our resources.

Still my question? why do we go to Arab countries? Why do we go to Japan? Why do we go even to Europe? or North America? I know it is not my fault to find myself in North America. I know how I got here. I always said I will never leave my country. But I have admit, my country damn hellish to live.

The people are so unfair to each other. Everything is according to tribe or ethnic or nepotism. It is hard to grow and develop. You are put down if you do not belong to certain group of people. You cannot even speak your langauge.

The contradiction, you are also forced to do everything in English? English has no historical or cultural value in Ethiopia. But the nation has been held hostage by the langauge. As you Ethiopian, you are told you have to use English to civilize. If you use your language, you cannot civilize. As one can see now, there is Ethiopian website that caters in amharic in Ethiopia. The 86 million people never use English in their daily lives, but everything is written english.

We have problems honeslty. But if people kill you if you want to work, there is anything you can do. Mr. Meles killed all his comrades who spent fighting for freedom. How can one do something in such counry where only person is the only one who can do what he want. Mr. Meles have been on power for 37 years now. He would not like to hear any differen idea from him. He would Ethiopians who voice their concern in prison or kill them. This is the recent history of Ethiopia. In a country where there is no law, one can hardly do anything in real. I blame the desptotic Enemy Meles Zenawi who has been holding my people hostage for the past 20 years. He is charging the 86 million people 2 billion dollar each year. He is doing this for his own selfish and stupid thinking. This man demanded the whole world that he want to land lock his country. He flew to Egpt, Europe, Geneva,... and land-locked the country. You are supporting the girls in Lebanon or Beirut. It is a good work. But, will that solve the whole Ethiopian problem? Are we going to build shelters for our girls in every Arab countries? Are we going to have shetler in Japan? Mind you this is everywhere on the globe?

I appreciate your effort, but I do not believe setting up shelters in every country will solve our problem. We need a solution in Ethiopia, right at home so that our people do not get sold.

Ethiopians are hospitable people (from my peregrination inside Africa, I have also learned that Tanzanians are welcoming people). I advise people like solo to visit Ethiopia and find out that by their own. Since Ethiopians are hospitable, they believe that other countries will do the same. As to the use of English language, I believe most information is available in English language and one needs to know the language to access that information. The reason for India’s success and to some extent Nigeria’s success (they have higher GDP better IT …. professionals than Ethiopia) is I think significantly attributed to the English language, which is widely spoken in both countries (India and Nigeria). An attempt was made to teach students in all Amharic some time during the DERG and thrust me the Amharic translation of scientific words is as difficult as the English itself.

I never meant to down play with your effort to help Ethiopians girls stranded in Arab.

May be your are new to such kind of things. But I myself I have seen it myself happening to Ethiopian everywhere I went. Also, sleeping on street is not just in Arab countries, everywhere in Africa is like that. If I tell you there are people who have beeen eaten by lions crossing from Mozambique to South Africa. There are hundreds of Ethiopians who died in refugee camps in Kenya, not far from Ethiopia. Young, young Ethiopians perished just in thier neibhouring country.

The main reason I said can we build shetlers in every country I am right. There are Ethiopians stranded in every corner of the globe. I do believe the solution is to solve the cause than to try to help individuals. Prevention is better than cure. That is what I believe. You may not believe I have been through similar situation. I have seen it myself.

I have also tried myself to help Ethiopians in Dubai and beruit. I started a network to help. But I found very difficult to help them. Reason, most of them are there illegally in those countries. Either they work as slaves or do prostitution. I able to help one person. She is now in addis. I tried to bring her to Canada. The Canadian consulate were very kind and almost offered me their help to bring her because she is young and I thought she could prosper if I bring her to Canada. However, she was there illegally and very difficult to help her to come here. But she agreed to go back home. Now she is back in addis. I am happy she is in school now.

If I could beg and kneel down to Meles Zenawi to listen to the people and to work with the people and to solve the country's national problem. But Meles would shot me than to listen to me. It is sad our nation is in this situation.

I really can't believe that a lot of us on this website rushed to castigate and chastise the victim without even trying to fully comprehend the story. Some of us belabour to score some cheap and deplorable political points at the suffering and humiliation of a fellow compatriot, a part of our own blood and flesh, regardless of one's political affiliation, in a foreign land, even if the story is to be believed on its face value. Some even would unabashedly try to be funny or make fun out of such a very excruciating and mortifying experience of a fellow sister and our national identity if we still have one. For me, this incident is only a partial reflection of the huge and complicated social, political, economic and cultural problem that we are enmeshed as a country. There are myriads of glaring and conspicuous questions that one can ask from this single episode. In view of all the suffering and humiliation that our sisters have been facing especially in the middle east, why are those wicked, inhumane, savage and cruel agencies operating in Ethiopia, which are openly making millions of dollars off of selling and bartering their own sisters for higher bidders still allowed to keep on their nefarious works and activities? If there is growth and development in the country as what the Ethiopian regime blabbers, why are still millions of Ethiopians opt to go out of the country as in some kind of mass exodus and subject themselves to such inhumane degradation, knowing what they will be subjected to, before even setting their foot to these countries? Are there any practical diplomatic efforts by the Ethiopian regime to help its own citizens that are suffering in these countries? If there are not any consensus or agreed up on norms or standards at higher Government levels between the Ethiopian regime and those Middle eastern countries, was there any effort to educate and repatriate those Ethiopians living such a life of unbearable misery and suffering back to Ethiopia, as most wouldn't want to go back to Ethiopia merely for the social shame and stigma that awaits them in their own country? All the problems of our people in these foreign countries honestly boils down to inept, reckless and self-serving policy choices by the regime in Ethiopia. No matter what our sister's personal choice and judgement might seem erroneous in this specific incident, the real problem is more wider and deeper than that and her personal ordeal is something that is inflicted by her own country, if she still can call it her country. With no any obfuscation, if one has to call a spade a spade, the root cause of the problem is the callous and apathetic policy choices that her own country is pursuing.

About three decades ago, I was waking, ofcourse in Addis where your imaginary racists live, with my friend. In a split of second my friend disappeared from my side. I looked left and right. I saw him running after some kids. I can tell how he was infuriated at these kids. Could he have reached one of them I couldn't tell what he woudn't have done at his victim. But I didn't know what infuriated him. I knew that person for long and had him for dependable friend. I thought I was dreaming till he gets calm and tells me the story.
"You heard those kids saying 'barya!barya!" he said to me and continued to explain to me the whole story. First when he said "You heard those kids saying 'barya!barya!" I would have laughed at him if I hadn't seen how much he was mad during the brief chase...Because calling even family member barya wasn't offending among those who live in highland areas.
He continued explaining to me that the kids were harassing two young boys. "Those two young tall boys!..." , I said.. My friend could read from my face how much I was bewilered by the event and helped me out of this by explaining to me what "barya" means to them.
My friend worked in the region these young boys came from .
