Ethiopia Walyas move up 7 spots to rank 124 in FIFA ranking
nazret.com - Ethiopia's surprising showing in the just concluded Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup has moved up the Ethiopian National Football team 7 spots in the latest FIFA World ranking. Ethiopia now ranks 124th in the World and 33rd in Africa. Ethiopia's 2-1 win against Zambia at the Cecafa challenge cup has give the Walya's the biggest points for the latest ranking.
Spain is the world's top team followed by Netherlands and Germany. In Africa, Egypt is the top team followed by Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria and Algeria. Close to Ethiopia, Eritrea ranks 177th, Somalia 182, Djibouti 191, Sudan 92 and Kenya 120.
Since FIFA started its ranking system in 1993, Ethiopia's best showing was in December 1992 when the team was ranked 85th and its worst ranking was 155th in December 2001. Ethiopia is slowly moving up in the ranking table, but has a long way to be a football powerhouse.
Ethiopia is in Group B for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Guinea, Nigeria and Madagascar. Ethiopia lost its opener qualifier game against Guinea 4-1 and defeated Madagascar 1-0, it now stands third place with three points. Ethiopia faces Nigeria on March 25, 2011 for the Cup of Nations qualifier.
