Head of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Visits Ethiopia:

Highlights Children’s Environmental Health, Clean Cookstoves, Women in Science, and Electronic Waste Management

Tuesday Feb 22, 2011: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson is visiting Ethiopia from February 22-23 to meet with senior Ethiopian officials. Jackson’s visit to Ethiopia will highlight issues of importance to the U.S. and Ethiopia, including protecting children’s environmental health, improving indoor air quality through clean cookstoves, and managing electronic waste.

While in Ethiopia, Administrator Jackson will meet with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and leaders from Ethiopia’s Environmental Protection Authority. Jackson will also join female members of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences to speak with students from Addis Ababa University about opportunities for women to take leadership roles in addressing environmental issues facing Ethiopia.

She will also receive a site-briefing and tour an e-waste de-manufacturing facility to highlight improved e-waste management and affirm the U.S. commitment to supporting innovation in the management of electronic waste. In addition, Administrator Jackson will participate in a demonstration of clean cookstove technology with civil society groups, and learn about the work of local non-governmental organizations.

The visit to Ethiopia is part of a larger effort to further the U.S. Government’s support of environmental protection in Africa. Administrator Jackson’s meetings in Ethiopia will advance the U.S. Government’s recently announced international environmental priorities and strengthen U.S. relationships with environmental counterparts in Ethiopia and other African nations.

The visit of the US EPA chief is a good gesture maybe she could suggest to her government to help us receive donations of air purifying masks that were over produced during Gulf War I and II and never used.

The US Department of Defense does not know what to do with them. But we in Ethiopia especially the residence of Addis will thank her to purify the air we breathe.

We live in one of the highly polluted city on this planet. It is not only the indoor air quality that needs improvement.

Most of the pollution in Addis Ababa is coming from weyanes. They eat ten times a day and fart uncontrollably (with stolen money from the Ethiopian people)…the rest of the people have to struggle to get one meal a day!

Dear visitor from the dearest of the dear USA. We extend our hospitality to you, but from what i gather i smell fish-that you are thinking of starting some USA donated project dealing with cleaning indoor air and elctronic waste. You are very smart you know how to feed a dictator. That is a feat you never failed at dear visitor. The Obama administration has increased funding towards environmental protection and i did not know it is used to throw up legesse zenawi on top of the Forbes list of richness. You know what that little dictator you will be meeting in Addis good at, robbery. The woyane’s economics (robberinomics)is rife with corruption, money laundering and day light robbery. . . Dear visitor, the indoor air quality is not as bad as you may think. The reason is because our kitchens are made of thached walls (called chika) and even though we don’t build chimnies, the holes in between the thached woods let the smoke out. In addition the clay walls themselves absorb the pollutants including the CO and CO2 and act as gas filter. You see dear visitor some times poverty defeats poverty without waiting for your expensive gudgets to arrive. Even the outdoor air is not as bad as you may think. Robbery is a silent industry and pollution free. The elctronic waste is also something that should not warrant your visit. Computers are heavily recycled in ethiopia and there is little waste produced. Dear jackson, while your visits are welconme the pretext of your visit is somewhat a bit puzzling. On another count, dear visitor, you are also visiting the ethiopian environmental protection agency which is a rubber stamp to woyane’s polluting industries, giving authorisation to land grab and all kinds of investment done at the expense of the poor community in ethiopia and at the expense of the already degarded environmental resorces of ethiopia. As a wise leader dear visitor, i expected that you will never set a foot in a country that uses its environmental protection bureau for environmental destruction. the office should be called EDA -ethiopian enviornmental destruction authority and it is led by meles’s genesis ‘ dr. twoeldeberhan of adwa. In Addis Ababa, the capital of ethiopia under woyane regime, watreborne and other enteric diseases have infested the city. Addis Ababa, i bet is a city that is the most contaminated with patghogens, and woyane sits right in the middle of it. Many of the rivers in the middle of cities and beyound are subjected to all sorts of toxic and dangerous pollution thanks to the reckless investment policy of woyane aimed at exhausting resources at the shortest possible time with the immediate and catastrophuic damage to the environment and the human population around. Dear visitor there is nothing more sickening than seeing poor women bow to fetch water that is polluted with chromium, mercury and all sorts of toxic compounds and take that water for drinking and use the river for agriculture. The spoksperson of the environment -EPA and twoldeberhan are partners in this crime. Dear visitor, at least after lunch do discuss some real politics. Ask them the logic of evicting and uprooting thousands of poor and defenseless rural farmers from their land and village in the reckless land grab policy. The only wild card woyane holds in its growth and transformation plan is land grab and eviction of indigenous people. The GTP (called Grab the Territory of Peasants) is there to cause untold havoc dear visitor and your are right on the dawn of this mega-sin. Dear visitor please do play real and let USA stop being aide to this capital crime.

I think something is fishy here. Instead of us speculating, why is the visit from Environmental Agency taking it so prominent position. I smell nuclear waste issue is at hand. So what is really the matter of this issue, it is not some kind of emission issue.

Today ETHIOPIA is in need of steping down the regime who is clearing the road For the neocolonialists who can not afford having jobbless citizens. And this regim is trying to help pesticide producers who try to convince their own farmers to comeback to organic farming that is helping them to florish as a small holding farmers. By selling the forbiden chemicals to the low income countries they reduce the number of jobless in their countries. Meles and the dull the so called agricultural minister is helping them by selling ethiopian land to Arabs, Chines, indians and more who can purchas the chemicals.
No body cares about the poor ethiopians who sufer by this chemicals. Incase US/other countries WHO produce hazardious chemimicals should end exporting those chemicals which are not allowed in their countries.

The USA assistance to Ethiopia is very important and should concentrate on the burning issue. I think the most important issue when it comes to health is the waste; which spread all over the city. To that respect if the US donate waste remover truck and garbage dumper. Garbage accumulation at a certain areas could be main health hazard to children and adults as well.

Tokechaw and Sultan,

You must love the stink in addis, people urinate and shit all over the city, you are not going to deny that, are you?

There is no need to compare other cities with Addis, let us compare apple with apples not apples with oranges if Nairobi or Delhi stinks, addis does not need to stink, unless you personally love it and can not live without it.
