Head of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Visits Ethiopia:
Highlights Children’s Environmental Health, Clean Cookstoves, Women in Science, and Electronic Waste Management
Tuesday Feb 22, 2011: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson is visiting Ethiopia from February 22-23 to meet with senior Ethiopian officials. Jackson’s visit to Ethiopia will highlight issues of importance to the U.S. and Ethiopia, including protecting children’s environmental health, improving indoor air quality through clean cookstoves, and managing electronic waste.
While in Ethiopia, Administrator Jackson will meet with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and leaders from Ethiopia’s Environmental Protection Authority. Jackson will also join female members of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences to speak with students from Addis Ababa University about opportunities for women to take leadership roles in addressing environmental issues facing Ethiopia.
She will also receive a site-briefing and tour an e-waste de-manufacturing facility to highlight improved e-waste management and affirm the U.S. commitment to supporting innovation in the management of electronic waste. In addition, Administrator Jackson will participate in a demonstration of clean cookstove technology with civil society groups, and learn about the work of local non-governmental organizations.
The visit to Ethiopia is part of a larger effort to further the U.S. Government’s support of environmental protection in Africa. Administrator Jackson’s meetings in Ethiopia will advance the U.S. Government’s recently announced international environmental priorities and strengthen U.S. relationships with environmental counterparts in Ethiopia and other African nations.

The visit of the US EPA chief is a good gesture maybe she could suggest to her government to help us receive donations of air purifying masks that were over produced during Gulf War I and II and never used.
The US Department of Defense does not know what to do with them. But we in Ethiopia especially the residence of Addis will thank her to purify the air we breathe.
We live in one of the highly polluted city on this planet. It is not only the indoor air quality that needs improvement.
@Mengistu Haile…you don’t know what you are talking man…have you seen all the world cities? have you seen major Indian cities?what about manila, bankbook, major Brazil cities, legose…Addis Abeba is by far clean compare to those cities but its good to work for the better!
USA IS HISTORICAL ENEMY OF ETHIOPIA.
AMERICA HELP TPLF SINCE LONG TIME AGO
MANY MANY OF AMHARA TRIBE PEOPLE
AMERICA DOES NOT KNOW DEMOCRACY BUT IT
CONCENTRATE ON ITS BENFIT ONLY,
I WISH GOD REVENGE ON AMERICA!!!!!!!!!
Most of the pollution in Addis Ababa is coming from weyanes. They eat ten times a day and fart uncontrollably (with stolen money from the Ethiopian people)…the rest of the people have to struggle to get one meal a day!
US. Hahaaa! USA is the Devis robot that is distroying the world, you name it,MONSATO, in Vietnam ,Latin America and Elsewhere contamnating the vergin earth with toxic and poisen etc…..
Now tell these crac-heads to hit the road sand never Come back JACK!!!!!!
Nothing good comes from US.
Ende wanaw mengistu ewqetih wisun new. Just read more about sanittaion problems of the world’s largest cities. kukniam. You are far behind !!
The noise pollution caused by the laudspeakers of churches and mosques is a problem people avoid talking about.
Environmental Protection Agency. . . .not only indoor air quality we need. . .
we need also clean water to reduce illness of our people. . .
visit our dying Lake Koka. . . .
Dear visitor from the dearest of the dear USA. We extend our hospitality to you, but from what i gather i smell fish-that you are thinking of starting some USA donated project dealing with cleaning indoor air and elctronic waste. You are very smart you know how to feed a dictator. That is a feat you never failed at dear visitor. The Obama administration has increased funding towards environmental protection and i did not know it is used to throw up legesse zenawi on top of the Forbes list of richness. You know what that little dictator you will be meeting in Addis good at, robbery. The woyane’s economics (robberinomics)is rife with corruption, money laundering and day light robbery. . . Dear visitor, the indoor air quality is not as bad as you may think. The reason is because our kitchens are made of thached walls (called chika) and even though we don’t build chimnies, the holes in between the thached woods let the smoke out. In addition the clay walls themselves absorb the pollutants including the CO and CO2 and act as gas filter. You see dear visitor some times poverty defeats poverty without waiting for your expensive gudgets to arrive. Even the outdoor air is not as bad as you may think. Robbery is a silent industry and pollution free. The elctronic waste is also something that should not warrant your visit. Computers are heavily recycled in ethiopia and there is little waste produced. Dear jackson, while your visits are welconme the pretext of your visit is somewhat a bit puzzling. On another count, dear visitor, you are also visiting the ethiopian environmental protection agency which is a rubber stamp to woyane’s polluting industries, giving authorisation to land grab and all kinds of investment done at the expense of the poor community in ethiopia and at the expense of the already degarded environmental resorces of ethiopia. As a wise leader dear visitor, i expected that you will never set a foot in a country that uses its environmental protection bureau for environmental destruction. the office should be called EDA -ethiopian enviornmental destruction authority and it is led by meles’s genesis ‘ dr. twoeldeberhan of adwa. In Addis Ababa, the capital of ethiopia under woyane regime, watreborne and other enteric diseases have infested the city. Addis Ababa, i bet is a city that is the most contaminated with patghogens, and woyane sits right in the middle of it. Many of the rivers in the middle of cities and beyound are subjected to all sorts of toxic and dangerous pollution thanks to the reckless investment policy of woyane aimed at exhausting resources at the shortest possible time with the immediate and catastrophuic damage to the environment and the human population around. Dear visitor there is nothing more sickening than seeing poor women bow to fetch water that is polluted with chromium, mercury and all sorts of toxic compounds and take that water for drinking and use the river for agriculture. The spoksperson of the environment -EPA and twoldeberhan are partners in this crime. Dear visitor, at least after lunch do discuss some real politics. Ask them the logic of evicting and uprooting thousands of poor and defenseless rural farmers from their land and village in the reckless land grab policy. The only wild card woyane holds in its growth and transformation plan is land grab and eviction of indigenous people. The GTP (called Grab the Territory of Peasants) is there to cause untold havoc dear visitor and your are right on the dawn of this mega-sin. Dear visitor please do play real and let USA stop being aide to this capital crime.
Environment degradation is a major issue in the present world, its a responsibility for all of us to contribute towards cleaner environment in our everyday activities, so let us all work on our awareness of the environment and our dependence on it.
safe environment conditions for all !
I think something is fishy here. Instead of us speculating, why is the visit from Environmental Agency taking it so prominent position. I smell nuclear waste issue is at hand. So what is really the matter of this issue, it is not some kind of emission issue.
Warner2010: You are absoluty right..I always wonder, wish they both stop doing that its so anoing…
Today ETHIOPIA is in need of steping down the regime who is clearing the road For the neocolonialists who can not afford having jobbless citizens. And this regim is trying to help pesticide producers who try to convince their own farmers to comeback to organic farming that is helping them to florish as a small holding farmers. By selling the forbiden chemicals to the low income countries they reduce the number of jobless in their countries. Meles and the dull the so called agricultural minister is helping them by selling ethiopian land to Arabs, Chines, indians and more who can purchas the chemicals.
No body cares about the poor ethiopians who sufer by this chemicals. Incase US/other countries WHO produce hazardious chemimicals should end exporting those chemicals which are not allowed in their countries.
The USA assistance to Ethiopia is very important and should concentrate on the burning issue. I think the most important issue when it comes to health is the waste; which spread all over the city. To that respect if the US donate waste remover truck and garbage dumper. Garbage accumulation at a certain areas could be main health hazard to children and adults as well.
Tokechaw and Sultan,
You must love the stink in addis, people urinate and shit all over the city, you are not going to deny that, are you?
There is no need to compare other cities with Addis, let us compare apple with apples not apples with oranges if Nairobi or Delhi stinks, addis does not need to stink, unless you personally love it and can not live without it.
you have a big problem. Seek help please.
Do not even compare, Meles is a little beggar. He is not even a thief.
America is a big big Thief. They use 2 % of their natural resources. They exploit of the world 98%.
What is the fuss about an American visiting E. official visit to Ethiopia? kkkkkk, you dammit Ethiopia, neither American nor Indian nor Chinese nor Arab will help you unless you help yourself.
For whatever the man is going to addis is going unnder environmnetal cover for other hidden agenda called American interest. It has nothing to do with humanity or with environment. It is about Amerian business interest.
That is how they go in to countries, save the children, save the women, save the animal, save the tribe, save the birds, save ….
What amazes me, Ethiopians have become so dependent on foreign officials I do not know the reason. The man is going there for business which may not have any relevance for Ethiopia.
We do love the American people, but not their big thief government. It is the American government who brought us Binladen, Gaddafi, Meles, Mugabe, Mobutu,… all kind of dictators. No matter what, first is American interest. Even if there is a devil in Ethiopia, if he or she respect American interest, the rest does not anything. American democracy is a complete lie.
This democracy jiny junka is a logo for their mission. They do not mean it. By the way, Scandinavian couuntries have more equietable society than USA. Canada has more equitable society even than any country. But still Canada never impose itself to force people to accept its way.
Anyway, the man is in a mission which has nothing to do with the dirt in addis. There is much pollution in the USA than in Ethiopia. Let him clean his house first.
People you do not have to write anything.
Say “I like it ” or “I do not like it".
I think we feel we are exercising freedom on the keyboard .
. . . .the paradise lakes of my great grandparents damaged because of the recklessness of your cronies tanneries. . .the water hyacinth infestations in both these areas are exacerbated by the effects of eutrophication, from a tannery in Lake Koka and from heavy fertilizer in Wonji. . . .
. . .what is the uses of your “EARS” if you have bladder, skin, and lung cancers?. . . .what is the uses of your EARS if you have kidney failure. . .damage to your nervous system that you cant even heard these sound from churches and mosques?, if your children has carcinogenic accumulates in their kidneys?. . . .
Idiot!. . . ."WHAT IS THE USES OF GRASSES IF THE HORSE ALREADY DIED"????
. . . .dont ever relate the stupidity and recklessness of your IMPOTENT REGIME with your dirty politics to our Religions!. . .
I think we all agree how badly our environment is being degraded. This is mainly the result of poverty and failed policies. I don’t think our policy makers have the slightest concern of protecting the environment in the first place. For me this two days visit is nothing but politics. Our problems are way bigger and complicated even for US if they were willing to take over from here.
