Ethiopia: African migrants flee Libya to Italy

Source: Sky News

Three boats laden with hundreds of African migrants fleeing Libya have arrived in Italy, the first such vessels to reach Europe since the start of the uprising against Muammar Gaddafi.

The boats carried around 800 people - mostly Eritreans, Ethiopians and Somalis - and were taken to the tiny outcrop of Linosa close to the larger island of Lampedusa where thousands have been arriving from Tunisia.

Some of the migrants - many of them women and children - were later ferried to Sicily and then taken on buses to a refugee centre.

"There are no more controls on the Libyan coast now. Thousands are leaving," a 26-year-old Eritrean woman rescued from one of the boats and taken to Lampedusa for medical checks said in an interview with TG5 television news.

An Ethiopian woman gave birth at sea on Saturday and was evacuated with her newborn baby from the refugee boat by an Italian navy helicopter.

A second pregnant woman was rescued and hospitalised but had a miscarriage.

The ANSA news agency quoted migrants from a fourth boat saying they had left Libya and were also heading for Italian shores with around 300 people on board.

And Mussie Zerai, an Eritrean Catholic priest in Italy who has been in contact with many of the migrants via satellite phone, said a fifth vessel - a dinghy - with 68 people on board was also headed for Italy.

The Italian government fears hundreds of thousands of migrants could depart for Italy if Gaddafi's regime falls. Italy has requested increased assistance from the European Union.

Gaddafi himself has threatened to send "millions" of migrants to Europe.

Gud,
EWUNETIM GUD NEH/SH!! I don't believe you in that you didn't understand the concept of the comment made by LAND. Everyone knows they came out of Libya now, but from Ethiopia yesterday!!! I advise the lady mom to name her child Meles if he is a boy or Azeb if she is a girl so that he and the family will not forget the source of their agony in their life time!!

Land.what kind of comment is this, you are full of hate, its people with your kind of mentality who are making life difficult for millions of people around the world. YOu can critisise meles or isias for other reasons, you cant critisise them for the crisis in Libya. Many ethiopians are leaving the country in search of a better living condition in Europe and USA, thats their agenda, not every one is leaving because of political reasons. If some has to be hanged it has to be you no ne else, you shouldnt wish death for any person.
doma ras athun.
I hope those ethiopians and eritreans who left Libya will enjoy their dreams in Europe and USA.

Both Land and Gud are wrong in their comments.

@Land

All the people of course did not migrated out of Ethiopia because of political reasons, they made a choice to leave their home in the hope for a better living conditions.

@Gud

You need to look at the concept of migration as a whole, not just in reference to what is said in the article.

I hate to say these: look, I have lots of things to complain about our government including...#100 Assab port, #101 poor job on Gilgel gibe 2 dam .......on and on......Here is my little point,do you ever blame your parents, grand parents, great grand parents etc. what you inhereted? I'm sure lots of have an answer, please "been there done that". Fight for improvement needs to continue, not for yourself but for Ethiopia. Let us not be blinded pro or con by what we read or hear.

Here is our problem, we all love our country but I feel I lover her more.

Why do these people bring another life to this world, without themselves having life? This really shows how primitive, and without pride this society is. Get life first! Why are you bringing new life to the misery you created? Please, habesha, learn from the past history! If you get more mouth to feed you need to produce more! Not travelling for handouts to western countries!I've been allways ashamed of being Ethiopian!How can one reproduce in Libya????? What kind of lust is it encouraging one even to have sex while somebody is in Libya??? And having ababy on a flee boat?

SHAME ON YOU FOR BEING ASHAMED OF YOUR NATIONALITY. ETHIOPIANISM BRINGS YOU RESPECT NOT SHAME. There is no country that is more important than your own country. If there are issues that is not addressed, take the initiative to address it. Do not wait for others to play an important role in your community.
UNLIKE you (kikuki), I am proud of my nationality and whatever the short come in Ethiopia, I am taking part to improve it. Please do not wait for others to educate your own people.

sedet, Tolla, Shemeles, Farve...

Let me ask you couple of questions:
1. Do you know why these refugees fled their country?
2. Do you know when these refugees fled their country?

You guys and your likes are full of hate and you think that Ethiopian refugees started fleeing their home country only during the government of Meles Zenawi. When you guys cease hating our brilliant Prime Minister, you will see the light at the end of the tunnel.

God help to see clearly.

kikuki,

Obviously, you have very serious mental problem and need to see neurologist. If I were you, it does not matter how bad a situation is in your country (if you have not divorced your country yet) can be; I would never be ashamed of my country.
