Ethiopia gvt. meetings in North America disrupted by mass protests
Several thousand Ethiopians protested against the government sponsored meetings held this weekend across North America. High Government officials from Ethiopia were in attendance at many of these meetings held in Washington DC, Columbus, Toronto and Seattle among others.
In Washington DC, Minister of Education Demeke Mekonen, Ethiopian Ambassador to the US Girma Birru and Berhane Gebre Christos former ambassador to the US and considered by many to be the real man running the show at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were in attendance.
The rally organized by opposition members in Washington DC was one of the largest. According to some reports, the meeting in Washington DC was forced to be cancelled due to the huge protest by Ethiopian opposition members. But official statement from Ethiopian government posted on its embassy's website reads, "Ethiopians and Ethiopian- Americans domiciling in and around the Washington Metro Area have pledged to play their role in realizing Ethiopia’s Growth and Transformation Plan /GTP/,in a spirited two-day confab they held at Howard University".
Some Ethiopians were denied access to the conference despite having invitation papers. Ato Fekeda Shewakena told Voice of America radio that he was denied access to the meeting due to his critical writings about the regime in Ethiopia.
The following are some of the videos posted by citizen journalists in several cities in America and Canada.
brethrens you are not protesting against Meles instead you are protesting against your nation’s (ethiopia’s) development. Think about it.
Sera Fet hulu,
Go back to Addis and fight your fight there if you have balls, stop abusing the US System.
Are’nt you all Prejudice and Racist. Listen to your own slogans first.
Banda is everyone who is a traitor. Look yourself in the mirror. It isnot Meles who changed his citizenship. Those of you who have sold your nationality for whatever reason have no right to talk on behalf of the Ethiopian people.
Go back to work, if you have any.
And leave Ethiopia for the Ethiopians. Ethiopia is not made in the US, and its fate is not in the hands of the Americans.
You are abusing the generosity of the American system. If you are and have dual citizenship then you know you are a Banda. That is the meaning of the word.
Ethiopia have been progress for this stage with out those hatered. So with them or wtiht out them her progress won’t stop.
They are talking about democracy in ethiopia but they are distrubting the peacful meeting becouse they know they dont have tangeble idea to put on the table.
Die with extrimists.
what a shame, Ethiopians must be the only people in the world who protest against ethiopian project…but are they really ethiopians? how come I see some familiar face from Eritrea too?
This video shows me that the number of protesters is dwindling from time to time. Most probably half of this small group of people are from shaebia and al-shabab. But even so, still they are few and they will stop shouting in the coming year after the death of their master, shaebia.
Unfortunately this kind of hooligan behaviour is not the first time to happen in the diaspora world. We have seen this kind of uncivilized behaviours every time meetings or conferences about Ethiopia are conducted.
Those anti-Ethiopia hooligans who were allowed into the conference room made it their duty to disrupt the conference by shouting abusive words on the attendants, setting on the fire alarm, disrupting the discussion in the hall and making bomb threats. They should have been banned from entry all together but providing them the opportunity to attend the meeting. The people who arranged the conference thought they would behave as grown ups. But they did not! So it was correct and appropriate not to allow their leader Tamagn Beyene(Mengistu Haile Mariam junior!)into the hall.
After having lived in a civlized country like the USA one would expect from these hooligans to have at least learnt how citizens should behave in respecting the rights of other people to express their views in a civilized manner instead of behaving in an un-Ethiopian manner. By behaving in this uncivilized way, they should realize that they are losing credibility and respect by the society in the US or other places they live.
When will they ever learn to respect other people’s rights? What this conference has proved is that the majority of good mannered Ethiopians are more than ever determined to support the Growth and Plan as well as contributing to the construction of the mighty Abay Hydroelectric Dam.
Ethiopia shall prosper!!
How big are those police. When one officer pushes one of the protester all of them get pushed back. I bet if all the police gather together they can blow a way the protesters with nothing but air lol.
I wondar what the cry-baby protesters accoplished. Every meeting went on as scheduled in eleven cities through US and Canada. The cry-babies managed to pull off one miner incident in DC but even that didn’t take place untiil the meeting was almost over!
Dear Cry Babies,
You’ve already ruled us for 100 years and you gave us nothing! You gave us no dam, no cream!
All you gave us was just zefens and a whole bunch of slogans!
Sorry but zefens and slogans alone can’t build Ethiopia! Its time for real action! The GTP action!
Why are this loosers seen as “pro democracy” they are anything but democratic. Their rasist views and slogan shows you who they really are Mengistu must have been talking about this loosers when he said “werk binetefe fandiya…..” they are blinded by hate and will never accept the new ethiopia, a country free from borcham leftovers of derg.
Dear genuine Ethiopians,
Don’t be surprised with people who are against development with in the diasporas. Most of them who are making trouble are Derg! “ene kemotiku serod aybikel alech ahiya”
With out Derg, shabia and other anti Ethiopians,my country shall prosper.
I know there are problems with EPRDF regime but i am glad to be in Ethiopia and be part of these development plan.
PEOPLE just coz u drive better cars and live in a better condition, do u think u r smarter than the people living on their home soil?………STUPID. We all know what u do for living……dont get me wrong am not a fan of the current autocrats but how come an ethiopian protests such a grand project. PLEASE FROM NOW ON LEAVE ETHIOPIA ALONE AND LIVE YOUR MEANINGLESS LONELY LIFE…. TAMAGNE AND CO
Soon these protests will be hitting the streets of Addis Ababa, and none of the threats and lures of the alien imposed federation will be able to stop the tide which is sweeping Africa. Ethiopians demand that their human rights and land rights are respected and will not tolerate anymore bogus growth and transformation plans under the neo-colonial witchcraft star of secession which chooses to benefit the few at the expense of the majority.
“Honesty means not to oppress anybody and deny him his deserved share. It does not mean being irresponsible or conceited and dictatorial. We, on Our part, will never cease to eliminate conceitedness, oppression, subversion and corruption in order to maintain peace and national security.” Selected Speeches of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I,
“In our own times, there are those expansionists who by shedding blood, desire to achieve their ambition and by dismembering themselves they are seen as tools for alien interests. Our people from Ethiopia shed blood, to save them from disintegration. Those personalities who believe in freeing a country by secession are selfish and prey to outsiders. We will not accept their motives.” Selected Speeches of HIM Negus Haile Selassie I, page 426
Long Live the Constitutional Monarchy!
Long Live the Kebra Negast!
Long live Ethio-Eritrean oneness!
Fire burn down the alien imposed federation of secession
Rise with the Lion of Judah!
Long live Independent Ethiopia!
several thousand? I’ve looked at all the videos on the net….it seems that it’s not only the embassy thats exaggerating…yes the DC protest was big…but ugly…the rest of the cities were funny…in the 10’s …people coming out with their kids…and anyone who watched the videos can judge if there were really as many as was said…nazret…you are my last bastion in the ethiopian news arena…..dont risk going the ethiopianreview way…just report it..we dont need your views
I don’t really understand the mentality of
of Tamegen . His protest now doesn’t have meanining for all ethiopians. This is national call not individual. We will builld the dum with or without Ethio-Americans live in US. We will not go back , but rather forward.
Comedians turned mourners have organised the toxic diasporas, this time they are opposing the construction of the great millenium dam, anyone with a rational mind doesnt oppose this holly cause which will play its role in alleviating poverty in the country.
There is an arabic proverb whic reads like this, “the camel marches and the dogs bark". The dogs marching as we saw it in the videos will neither halt nor divert ethiopias move to execute the Building of the dam, so as the camel marches faster the diaspora dogs will bark louder and longer.
The vast majority of ethiopians have dissociated them thelves from those shaebiya funded political organisations.
Ethiopia forever, The millenium dam is now our national brand, we have the capacity to build the tenth biggest dam in the world, its gona produce 5200MW of electricity. Ethiopias electric production will be increased by 5 fold in the coming 5 years. Millions of ethiopians will be able to have electric power. Our forests will be protected, we will earn foreign currency and satisfy the ever growing demand of electricity by our industries.
This millenium dam will help ethiopia’s ambition to come out of darkness, The diaspora radioactive elements want us ethiopians to stay in darkness.
VIva Ethiopia, our government and people of ethiopia will be able to build the dam, just in 5 days after the beginning of the sale of bonds, tens of milions of birr worth of bond have been sold out.
people in various regions of the country have showed support to the project, students, workers, farmers and others from different walks of lives are showing support to the project.
Where did we go wrong?
WHAT DID WE DO TO DESERVE THIS?
20 years ago the Ethiopian people were chearing for TPLF ! AS IT MARCHED TOWARDS ADDIS ABABA .
What happened in the last twenty years that made the people show resentment against us?
We develop[ed the country and gave democracy and justice .
We ensured equality and the freedom to decide on their own affairs to the people of Ethiopia.
We made sure the dreams of all Ethiopians come true.
There is nothing the fighters have not sacrificed and THIS IS THE THANKS WE GET ? Very sad.
All the people that participated in this protests need to be examined for mental health evaluation.
Well either u call it shabia or olf or kinijet ther is a voice loud voice to be consider and to over come by dialogue that is the point I found it in this anti govt of Ethiopia demonstration so concerned citizen of Ethiopia we call for dialogue as soon as possible thanks
this useless modern banda’s needs to change their game or be part of the development cuz they loosing it. I was in the Atlanta GTP meeting and am very surprised to see a lot of Diasporas in one place with out cursing each other although there is a few bandas but they are overwhelmed by the majority..the meeting was so successful and civilized..the DC meeting is not disrupt because of the few crazy protest, its because they put on the fire alarm and they were saying there is a bomb in the building so the police had to stop the meeting because of security alert….BEKA YEWESHET LEKSO!!!!
Tamagne is really “tamagne” to his derg buddies… did I hear him contradict himself… he says he doesn’t want Meles to build the Dam on Nile and a minute later, he contradicts himself saying, we will build the dam with no external help..
If Tamagne is, Azmari, turned politician… so I am not that surprised.
These videos have convinced me to why I have to buy the bonds. If the idea is to convince people like me that aren’t politically active to choose your side you’ve just turned me off! The insults behind the cameras at times say a lot than what is actually being recorded in front of the camera. What an ugly scene! I can contemplate what would happen if these guys take power!! I’ve never never thought in this direction. The Abay is showing some strong signs of how low these gentlemen have sunk.
