China's backing for Ethiopia dam riles activists

China's backing for Ethiopia dam riles activists

It's a story that truly spans the globe: Activists from all over the world, including San Francisco, are trying to stop the construction of a dam in Ethiopia financed by a Chinese bank.

The Gibe 3 Dam is in the early phases of construction on Ethiopia's powerful Omo River, using $500 million dollars in equipment funded by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC). The hydroelectric dam, one of the largest construction projects in Ethiopia's history, would regulate the flow of water along the Omo River as it courses through Ethiopia and into Kenya's massive Lake Turkhana -- a freshwater oasis in the heart of the desert.

Oh yeah?
Ethiopia needs food first. You can not be begging for food at the same time while you are begging for funds to build several dams, hydro or not. It don't make no sense.

I told you folk. They, the so called enviromentalist (afagots,les65bian org) charities and Ngo, all wants us to live in dark and begger life. They want ethiopia to be as a starving nation on earth. They want us to live as a begger nation.
They do not want to see any develpment in ehiopia at all.
They are ther to make sure we stay on beggerisem so that they can collect their annual incomes from their western govt.
Throw out these parasites og. Out of ethiopi soil for good.
Ethiopia will be better without them,
It is also a work of shabia agents and some crack-heads opposition who went all the way to china to protest .
These are not ethiopia but a shermuuta lijoooche. Who sleep with shabia of the north. They are now trying to get support from egyptian govt. to stop tha abay dam too. Any development in ethiopia is a cancer to shabians and wester charities, ngo and now these enviromentalist.

Dear Teshager,

I don't think you get it!!! Are you saying only because Ethiopia needs food, we can not build dams? Actually, if we build more dams, more hydroelectric power will be available for bigger domestic factories and we will be less dependent on food aid..we will also be exporting more hydro electric power which means more cash to expand our farming sector.
Go for it.
God bless the United States of Ethiopia!!!

Since time immemorial, people have been building dams to store and manage water resources. There are more than 75,000 dams in the United States alone. In many cases building dams has many advantages than disadvantages. Ethiopia has all the rights to utilize its own resources responsibly, properly and effectively to the best advantages of its people. No one has the slightest moral or ethical authority to question the wisdom of building a dam, let alone to try to block or deny funds, knowing that the construction of the dam will definetely help to reduce the impact of the recurrent drought and flood our country suffers from. For the 80 million Ethiopians the construction of the dam has a novel cause. We are not building a nuclear reactor; for Gods sake, we are constructing a dam to produce energy and to manage the water resource so that we will be able to support the ever-growing survival needs for millions of Ethiopians.
To be fair and reasonable, the proper and meaningful roll for environmentalists, in this case, should have been to solicit and advocate for ways to ensure that their basic concerns regarding any negative impacts as a result of the dam be minimized or eliminated by the initial planning and incorporation of the appropriate mitigation measures into the design, construction and operation of the project to make the dam environmentally responsible and socially acceptable both for upstream and downstream inhabitants, and the surrounding natural ecosystem.

When Ethiopia is tryng to rid itself from dependency on the so-called developed world by,among other things, constructing a hydroelectric power(not nuclear power), a concerted noise is being echoed to stop a project that Ethiopia believes is best for her people. The reasons behind this rally is obviously the envy that it is being financed by China. Ethiopia has chosen not to live in darkness and underdeveloped for ever. The harm that the construction of the dam would incur as portrayed by these "activists" is based on other motivations than what is claimed.

Ethiopia shall prosper!!

This was a song we sang as kids in the dergue era. Though it has a great national theme and unifying tone, it didn't make diffrent for it wasn't implimented practically.
But now the whole thing is being translated in practice literally. We are building dams one after another. People from all walks of life regardless of their religion and ethinicity are standing side by side working together. Our main goal is to eradicate our #1 common enemy poverty and most of all to put our country Ethiopia first, before any of our personal needs.
I chose the above song from the dergue era, because everything said in the song is being done now in our country Ethiopia and Ethiopians with our govt EPRDF under the great leadership of PM Meles Zenawi.

After Africans got rid of colonialism in the ninteen sixties, this was quickly replaced with neo-colonialism, under which Africans were theoretically independent and free, although the reality said the opposite. This relative freedom brought neither real freedom nor economic development, and Africans remained as poor and backward as they had always been.

The new masters, the Chinese and Indians, have a different strategy of providing infrastructures in exchange for the abundant African raw material, contrary to Westerner’s who never wanted to see a change in Africa, but were ready to exploit everything. They never wanted to teach Africans to catch a fish by themselves. This change of events has brought panic to the west, because seeing the advantages of working with the Chinese, African countries are turning their backs on them.

Today with its so-called activists, NGOs etc, the west is fighting Africa’s development with nails and teeth, with the aim to maintain the status quo (poverty till kingdom come). What hypocrisy? How can overfed and over clothed westerners, fight day and night in order to keep a group of people in the Omo valley in a primitive and malnourished condition, half naked and infested with diseases. Is this not being callus and extremely inhuman? How can anybody enjoy with the poverty and misery of others? If just ten people happen to live in such utter poverty and backwardness in there so-called civilized west, they would have raised hell.

The west has condemned native Indians and the Aboridgines in to tourist attractions, and we Ethiopians should not allow our tribes of the Omo valley to have the same fate. We want them educated, civilized and living a decent life. They will achieve this through settlements, irrigation farming and electrification of their villages and towns in the future. GGIII will do all these, and therefore, Ethiopians should make GGIII a reality, whether activists and NGOs like it or not.

The future for industrial power was considerd to be a nuclear power. But now as we see it, most industrial countries are on the verge of abandoning it, Germany announcing to shut down its nuclear reactors totally by 2022.
Now hydro electric is the most reliable power source, considering other sources like natural gas which is costly and other renewable energies like sollar and wind etc.. might not be ready and we still don't have the technology to make them dependant.
Whether the so called activists like it or not, they cannot turn the wheel of history backwards or they cannot stop us from using our God given natural resource, our own water.
HYDROELECTRIC IS THE FUTURE!!!

This is hypocrisy at its best. Ethiopia has God given right to utilize its natural resources just as any country and get out of darkness. If this means resettling 300,000 citizens for the sake of 80 million, it is well worth it!

Everybody knows western Countries don't give a damn about Africa as a whole let alone 300,000 Africans. They just want Africans to remain in darkness forever so that they would continue to drain its resources for centuries to come. Just Imagine USA or Europe without electricity for one week? Did they manage to light every single corner of their respective countries without polluting the environment or resettling citizens? NO! They even wiped out indigenous people from Australia, NewZealand,North/South America etc, displaced millions of Africans and Asians from their natural environments to build their nations so please spare us the lecture!!!

Ethiopians can't utilize Nile river because it affects Egypt, can't use Omo river because it affects Kenyans. What the hell! We thank China for their continued support on this. I strongly believe Ethiopians despite any differences, MUST rally behind these projects, buy Ethio government bonds, organize pro Gibe III and Renaissance dam projects rallies everywhere. We can't remain in darkness and continue to starve while others enjoy Ethiopia's resources. This is neither fair nor right

@ Teshager, how would Ethiopia develop and be self sufficient without building dams, roads, and other infrastructures. People would get a better chance of feeding themselves when there is higher supply of power. Furthermore, the water that will be reserved could be used for irrigation and fishing.

I am wedi Alula, wedi Thedro, wedi menelick and wedi Yohannes,

C'on Senait, you are brave. In the USA they have 500 big dams. We have almost none.

May I suggest to the Ethiopians government to ask all the Europeans embassie to leave Ethiopia in 24 hours. They will not allow us to get electricity. They sell and donate to us genetically modified food, but they tell us electricity from water is dangerous?

Why they do not stop their GM industries? Why they do not close all their nuclear power plants?

Why they do not dismantle all their dams?

Please ask all Europeans, American NGOS to vacate from Ethiopiasn.

One of the best thing this government has done, it is able to over ride the coloninasts who kept Ethiopia in constant war and famine. We have had war with Somalia because of them twice and we have had with our cousins in the North because of them.

What do they want ? Selfish human being. Why they cannot stop driving cars if they care about enviroment?

If there are Ethiopians who lobby with the NGOS. We need to keep record of their mames. These are the sold out bands.

There can never be developmnt without power or electrictiy. The whole Europe, North America has 24 electricity. The united state has 500 dams of various sizes. The same with Europeans.

Almost the whole North American and Europeans society , each family member have cars which produce billions tons of carbon dioxide and other green houses gases. The iceberg in the arctic and antarctic is melting every year and global warming is a real danger.

All these who crying about one dam in Ethiopia, they are neither enviromnetalist nor humanitarians. They are capitalist who are trying to control the whole world.

Ethiopians do not listen to these snakes. They cannot even walk one killometer without driving cars and yet they are lobbying against one dam in Ethiopia to provide electricity to the people of Ethiopia who are living in darkness?

If the world is in danger because Ethiopia is building an environmental benign one hydropower to light up the life it its citizens, then let the sun stop shining. Let the stars fall down. Let the earth quake chasm and oonvulse and destroy the whole world. let the sky turn upside and let the oceans turn upside because Ethiopia is building a clean power plant.

Ethiopian governemnts, do not allow these to meddle in our affaires. They are doing because you are allowing them to meddle in our affaires.

Why they do not dismantle the dam in Egypt? why they do not destroy all the dams in Europe and North America?

The fact that they are trying to tell to tell to the Chinese and to Ethiopians is not about enviroment. They are trying to control every country. Ethiopian governemnt must not allow any of these.

Even if they do not give us loan, and even if they convicne the Chinese not to help us, we will raise more than enough money to build anything we want.

Also, keep them away from the Bank, telecom,... other national treasures. They do not care about Ethiopia, but they are salivating like a dog which has whetted itself after having seen a big meat with someone.

They are salivating about the Telecom because they see untouched, untapped huge market in Ethiopia.

There is no meaningful country that has handed its telecom and bank to non-citizesns.

I suggest to the government to help Ethiopians citizens to invest in the industry and also to encourage univesity to set up research and developemnt centers to promote entrepreneurship of citizens.

I am thinking of investing in Ethiopia in the telecom. It is one of my big projects but it will take awhile to get ready. We will produce any gadget we want in the near future. We can do whatevery one can do.

The goverment must focus now:

1. Power generation
2. Electrification
3. Large irrigation scheme
4. Large telecom controlled by goverment and the govenemnt must lease only services to its citizens. I can not have license im America to provide internet or mobile services. I have to be American citizen. They are coming to Ethiopia to tell you that you have to privatize the telecom, they are after their own business interest. They do not care about Ethiopians. Tell them it is not their business because Ethiopia is an indepedent country with its own rules.

Let the Americans live the American way and let them allow us to live our own way. They are telling us their way better, let them have their ways for themselves.

If they are humanitarian, let them leave the countries they are occupyting like Iraqi and Afganistan. If they are humanitarian, let them stop bombing liyba the way they are doing.

The Ethiopian govenemnt must strengthen relation with China. China is a trust worthy country. Chinese are not known for exploiting people. They are known for building and help many countries. They may sell products. That is fine. It is their right to do so. They also do not want to see China in Africa. That is one of their big fear. With China expanding and becoming powerful, they are affraid of it.

So, electricity, food, shelter, clothing, then internet, cellphone. Internet cannot come before electricity, water, food, and other bbasics. Internet is last . No need for internet now. They are trying to brainwash the people using internet.

Oh man, when ever I hear and see good things happening in our motherland this is the song that I start humming. It was and is a great patriotic song, though it was associated with the murderess Durg, it is still a great song. It is actually a prophetic song.

Do you know the origin of that song?

It was first sung, at an early stage of the 1974 revolution, by the restive noncommissioned officers and soldiers of the then military aviation and the military ’mhandis’ who at an early stage, were strongly against the Durg taking power by itself and who were advocating the establishment of a broad based popular transitional government and who were calling for the ouster of the Emperor too early.

Several 100s of those soldiers and noncommissioned officers were once surrounded on the tarmac of the army aviation by the Durg soldiers and that is when they first sung this song.

Several key figures of that group were latter picked up and imprisoned and were latter killed along with the former dignitaries of the Emperor Hailesilasie‘s regime.

But latter the Durg adopted it, unfortunately it has always been assumed to be the song that the Durg came up with.

Yes Ethiopia will prosper!

Well done Senait, YHD !!

No matter what they do is dume to failure. Las March Some 400 Organizations have signed a petition against the construction of Gibe III Dam project.
Agences such as the So-called Survival International lead by Sarah Shenker, and Inernational Rivers from California etc. claim to protect and defend the lives of tribes and rivers on which they depend. NGOs wish to keep Ethiopians in darkness.
They are launching a concerted propaganda " stop Gibe III Dam".
The truth of the matter is that these Organizations are making their living in the name of tribes and rivers. That is it.

Currently, Western countries are losing markets for their industrial products. In a very short time China has become the second largest economy in the world.
The former colonial masters from Europe are in the state of confusion due to financial crises. UK, USA, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Irland etc are bankrupt.
All in all they are gradually lossing their source of income from the wealthy African continent very rich in minerals and energy sources.

In Africa things are rapidly changing for the better. Thanks
China and India are coming to Africa for a much better mutual cooperation and trading.
As a result Western governments and their NGOs are fueling anti-chinise propaganda in Africa. In vain they try to put a wedge between Africans and Asians.
Thus these NGos campaign against the commercial Bank of China and Exim Bank of China, which are funding projects in Ethiopia.
All NGOs must leave Ethiopia. Their main mission is to perpetuate hunger and dependency.
The Woyane regime lead by Melese Zenawi in Ethiopia is a little darling of western governments and their NGOs.

The most amazing thing about the mafia from adwa is, they are happy when they are collecting billions from their white masters and also food, but as soon as they are criticised or refused fund they act like a spoilt child. Ethiopia has never seen/experienced such degree of food shortage. I never hear about how tplf is going to sort this out. Ever since the flower business started in ethiopia the price of food tef got to 2000 birr, this has never been seen before. The tplf mafia must stop giving ethiopis land to others and feed the people first. As to the dam this is only for export so it is not for the benefit of the people. God save ethiopia.
