Ethiopia’s Commercial Bank Signs Mobile Banking Accord With IBM

Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, the country’s largest lender by revenue, has signed a deal for International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) to build a platform to deliver electronic banking services, as it aims to employ new technology to expand its business.

The state-owned lender plans to increase the number of its branches by 500, from 372 at present, over five years and to boost account holders by 25 percent a year, from 2 million now, the Addis Ababa-based bank said in an e-mailed statement today. The statement was released jointly with New York-based IBM.

Our neighboring country Kenya and other east African county Uganda have started using a long time before, for your surprise Somaliland and Puntland are using mobile money. We have a long way to catch up with other African countries, all are ahead of us when it comes to Banking and Telecommunication. O Lord! deliver us from the bondage of bureaucracy!

God Bless Ethiopia!

I am a bit confused, Is there a well developed Internet service to support mobile banking? I am atleast trying to conceptualize how this can be done. From what I am hearing the internet service is very backward even to get an email.

I wonder how IBM is going to improve such lousy and backward internet system. In addition the power cut is a daily experience and any one can witness what happend during Clinton's last visit at Addis Ababa. I wish the Bank managment would have known the word "Priority" and maintain what comes first before jumping to such radical change.

prince of konso,

Better late than never!

Nearly all African countries are using mobile and internet money for some years now. We are trailing after them, it's a good news but do not forget that we are behind the world.

God Bless Ethiopia!

well,i wud say go CBE and it might be little let but it is not too let for the ethiopian people and Internet connection cant be a big deal for mobile banking cos almost all communication will be based on text so.....let me put it this way 64kb internet connection can send 5 page of a text book per sechond....so think of mobile banking could have ...
That being said ....i am more concerned on Security....IT security is main agenda in Ethiopia ....I heard that Etc has has been tested by some ethical hackers...and hack etc network easly...so for me CBE should work on Network security...and it is easy ....to maintain that...

FYI, did I mention that back in 2008 when I was there I couldn't even get a decent email accessibility, let alone trying to pay my bill. It was a nightmare to say the least.
