Ethiopia's foreign direct investment declines

Africa Report

Ethiopia’s foreign direct investment (FDI) continued on a downward spiral last year with the Horn of Africa country receiving just US$184 million in investment.

According to the 2011 World Investment report released by the UN Conference on Trade and Development UNCTAD, Ethiopia’s share of FDI inflows to Africa is just two percent.

“Unfortunately, the amount of FDI flow to Ethiopia has continued to decline, from an annual average of US$240 million between 1995 and 2004, to US$184 million in 2010,” reads part of the report.

The reports also shows that Ethiopia’s share of FDI in its gross fixed capital formation has declined by an annual average of 14.8 percent over the 1995-2004 period to a mere 3.2 percent in 2010.

At the same time the contribution of remittance by the diaspora Ethiopians has reached $1.1 billion dollars just within last year . This is not counting the diasporas that open businesses back in Ethiopia under other representative agents name . These representative agents happen to be the ones fueling the corrupt government with bribe money in order to acquire business permits and other natural resources for free or cheap prices .

Ethiopia, just like any other developing nations, of course seeks foreign investment, because it expands the scope of the development efforts. But as the report indicated Ethiopia has been losing foreign investments, this may be due to the global economic decline and others.
As the world economy is suffering from its recession, investor has been limited to invest in a few selected sectors. So many of the investor would like to invest the area which has short term benefits
The foreign investment can be substituted by domestic as well as government investment. Although government has very few resources, our pragmatic leaders have been using effectively. As the result the past decade it has been built long range highways, universities, hospital and others

Are we not adding the flow of parasites charities and NGO money that end up in corrupted weyannes and hoddams poucket?

This is what i call the ethiopian GDP from now on

A FEMAIN. GDP. 10%

Thanks to Ethiopian Patriots and organizations such as Human Rights Watch, Amnesty international, specialized agencies of the United Nations and the Guardian newspaper, who have been exposing the corruption and illegitimacy of the alien imposed federation of secession in Ethiopia, we are witnessing the downfall of an era where the minority have been benefiting at the expense of the majority. The regime is only clinging to power by its economic dominance which is serving the entering wedge for political domination. We must continue to expose the corruption and illegitimacy of the regime on the international scene, so as any foreign investor knows his investment is unstable under the current administration. And if the great powers do not cease from providing the regime with the economic dominance to maintain its grip on power, their own indebted economies will reach a state of chronic depression and meltdown.
It is with economic weapons that neo-colonialism has been and can be overcome, and to achieve this requires faith in the guidance of the Almighty God.

"Neo-colonialism today takes two forms: economic and political. We recognize that economic dominance is not only often the more difficult to eliminate, but often serves as the entering wedge for political domination. We further recognize that, given the history of our continent, and the conditions under which we came to freedom, it is not unusual that, despite our best efforts, the economic independence which we seek is long and difficult in coming. Long-established patterns of trade are not easily or quickly reoriented. Let us not delude ourselves in thinking that these facts, for such they are, are of no significance for the future of Africa. But let us, at the same time, toil with all our strength to alter them.
When we consider political neo-colonialism, our desires, although perhaps no less difficult of attainment, are at least easier of articulation. We seek to avoid a rigid and inflexible posture which prejudices our position on major issues before the world. We seek to avoid alignment, to achieve true non-alignment. Our late good friend, H.E. Prime Minister Nehru of India, put it thus: 'The only camp we should like to be in is the camp of peace and goodwill.'" Selected Speeches of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, page 269-70

"The aim of those leaders that is based on ambition for power and personal gain is one with no firm foundation and will, consequently, crumble easily." Selected Speeches of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, page 471

Long Live the Constitutional Monarchy!
Long Live the Kebra Negast!
Long Live the United Nations Charter!
Fire burn the neo-colonial witchcraft star of secession
Rise with the Lion of Judah!
Long Live Independent Ethiopia!

Did we ask what is our problem for so money decid we can't eradicate this chronic disease from our land. securit, The economy policy, stability are the maine factors for any foreign investor to have a confidence to invest on our country.unless we focus within our problems we can't get investors like we want.

It is funny that just last February the Communications Director of Ethiopian Investment Agency, Getahun Negash, said that “ foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flow to Ethiopia has continued growing and the country has attracted around two billion US dollars of investment in the past six months”. Two Billion dollars in just six months!!!! Mind you, the country’s entire budget (both regular and capital budget) was 5.7 Billion for the 2002 (2010/11) fiscal year. He didn’t even blink his eyes when he gave the press conference. Now compare that figure with $184 million. For woyane cronies, it is very easy to come up with a baloney statistics. Oh, mother Ethiopia!!!

This is a big news for Alemayehu G/Mariam who is now working on his next article entitled 'I told you so'. By the way, I am neither challenging nor applauding the report since I know there is an active campaign to discourage investment and developmental aid which very few elites in the west want to use it for their political game. However, the government and people of Ethiopia have made it a priority to depend on the capacity from within rather than anticipating it from outside, and therefore the 5 years plan is in full swing and all major works have already begun. I think Professor Alemayehu did us a favor by including in his most recent article that the diaspora population sent back about 1.1 Billion in the last two-three years time which is much greater than the percentage of investment decline. I would like not to say 'who cares for the dead fish' because Ethiopia needs foreign investment, nonetheless will not cease to exist if it is not there and will keep going thanks to our own working hands.

Well, there is fundamental problem in the Economic policy of the Govt. Specially troubling is the 'militant unions' a la France in the Nation. No serious investor will set foot anywhere where militant workforce is being pampered and encouraged by the govt. This is a ' wake up ' call for the govt.

The Derg regime has done more development than what the so called free economy has accomplished in regards to developing the country in the last twenty years .

The Derg regime without recieving huge foreign aid money like the current government does constructed more developmental infrastructures than the infrastructures that had been built within the last twenty years .

The fact that the Derg regime eventhough was in a constant civil war and didnot get huge foreign aid money but managed to build built more infrastructures shows that the WOYANE corrupt government is just trying to cover up the failed adminstration's result for the last twenty years by giving unreasonable excuses like they didnot build as much so far because the government was saving it's resources and it'senergy towards building the Rennaisance (ABBAY) dam project . Which happen to be the sillyest excuse for their inadequate way of governing the country which led the life standard of the people of Ethiopia to the lowest compared to others in all aspects . Abbay Dam cannot be the reason for the government neglecting the needs of the people.

NAZRET; In the past you fail to mention any positive steps under taken by the government to elevate the life of ordinary citizens and improve the image of our country. You have been waging war against any development and became a mouth piece for hateful individuals and groups. Now when the news fit your interest it is ok,to throw all kind of dirts.I support all investments through out the country where as in Tigrie,Oromiya,Amhara,Gambella,Ogaden,Afar,Beneshangule,etc...,because, the sum of all this ,project her and there is a wealth for the country.
