Ethiopia Food Prices Up Nearly 50%

Ethiopia Food Prices Up Nearly 50%

By Peter Heinlein | Addis Ababa

VOA News

Ethiopians awoke Tuesday to news that food prices had increased nearly 50 percent over the past year. They didn’t need to be told. Even middle-class Ethiopians are finding it more difficult to feed their families.

Ethiopia’s annual inflation rate jumped to nearly 40 percent in July. The Central Statistics Agency says food prices, which comprise more than half the Consumer Price Index, were up 47.4 percent from a year ago.

In local markets, faces were glum, but few were willing to talk about their condition. One shopper, who gave his name as Geremew, simply held up the thick wad of birr, the Ethiopian currency, that he was holding as he waited to pay for a small basket of food.

Mansour Mohammed, a grocer in central Addis Ababa, says prices of essentials such as cooking oil have risen much more than the average, forcing consumers to switch to cheaper alternatives. "People say that’s expensive. Once you [could] buy vegetable oil 20 birr, [approx.$1.25] now it’s 60 birr ($3.75). It’s almost 200 percent increase. But you can change. Instead of vegetable oil you can use palm oil," he said.

The statistics agency says transportation costs and housing were up more than 40 percent during the past year. The price of a liter of gasoline stood at 21 birr this week, a massive increase despite government promises to keep inflation in single-digit territory.

When prices began to shoot skyward earlier this year, the government imposed price controls on a number of items and began selling sugar and cooking oil directly to consumers. But the controls led to shortages, and were dropped after infuriating shop owners and failing to ease inflationary pressure.

While the price caps were in place, shopkeepers were accused of keeping goods off the market until prices rose. But after the controls were removed, shortages continued and prices surged.

Government economists say the inflation rate is being driven largely by the drought that is crippling food production in parts of the Horn of Africa. But others, such as opposition leader and former World Bank director Bulcha Demeksa, says factors such as government land policy and corruption are just as much to blame.

"The farmers are not producing enough. There is commotion in the agriculture sector. Commotion meaning the farmer’s mind is not at rest. He is not even sure whether the local officials are going to take his particular plot or not. These are people who take a small bribe and take land from one and give it to the other, and [so] people do not produce as much. The population is increasing; production is not increasing because of government land policy," Bulcha said.

Government statistics indicate more than 13 million of Ethiopia’s 80 million people will receive some sort of nutritional assistance this year. About 4.5 million are in urgent need of help, and emergency food stocks are stretched by the arrival of an additional 150,000 refugees from famine-stricken Somalia.

Despite the difficulties, the government is predicting economic growth of 11 percent this year. The International Monetary Fund says inflation troubles are likely to cut that figure by half.

This is the result when Economists from Dedebit School of economics lead a country. One of the Wikileaks cables released recently talk of how visiting German politicians were shocked by Melles's lack of basic economic concepts. 50% inflation means the Birr is just a piece of sh**t. The weyanes are committing economic genocide on the Ethiopian people. God only knows how ordinary people like the civil servants survives this rampant inflation. Incompetent weyanes mismanaged the economy really bad and now blaming the situation in the world and everybody else except themselves. They will pay the price sooner than later. The chickens are coming home to roost.

There are three main reasons for the inflation. First; unsustainable population growth rate of more than 2 million additional mouths to feed every year. Second; the business community in Ethiopia is very well known for their price-fixing and hoarding habits. Why sell your commodity today, if you can sell it tomorrow for 5% more?
Third; the farmers have now the infrastructure and the information, therefore they sell their products for a higher price than a decade ago.
These factors and the East-African drought are among the reasons for the price hike. Mismanagement and corruption by government officials definitely worsen the situation, but the core problems are population and greed.

So, what is the solution diasporas could do???

I believe, lets gather in group and create our own Social fund organization. Then, we will send food items into our back home.

This kinds of community relief organization and systems are working for Jewish community helping their people in Israel, Indian community helping Indians, etc.

Don't you feel ashamed, while more than a Million Ethiopians are living im North-America and all the News Medias talk about Starvation in our homeland??? Do you feel comfortable, while you are watching the News in your dining rooms, in expensive Restaurants??

Ethiopians must embrace their cultural traditions through the Constitutional Monarchy which provides education free at all levels and entitles every Ethiopian family a gasha (80-100 acres) of freehold land to be past down from generation to generation in order to increase their standard of living, lest Ethiopia be a have-not when she has all the potentials through her God-given natural resources that should keep her immune from from the global price hikes in food by becoming self-sufficient.
With the weak soon to collapse alien imposed federation of secession, we witness annual food shortages, as it is the regime that claims to own all rural land holdings which is supposed to provide the sustenance for Ethiopia's survival. Unfortunately the regime disregards the land rights of Ethiopia's poor majority and prefers to lease off large tracts of fertile lands to wealthy outsiders who export the bulk of the agricultural produce to benefit themselves and their alien puppets, whilst the alien imposed federation annually begs for food aid which it uses for political repression. The regime calls that neo-colonial economic model double digit growth, yet that growth bears no fruit Ethiopians can eat.

"The forest resources of Our Empire constitute one of the most important elements of the wealth of Our land. When Our forests are properly conserved, they protect the fertile soil from erosion; they render the landscape green and beautiful. But when forests are neglected and gradually destroyed, the wealth of Our land is progressively reduced and the country slowly becomes bare and barren." Selected Speeches of HIM Negus Haile Selassie, page 483-4

"During the past year, the abrupt cessation of rainfall during the growing season caused considerable damage to Ethiopia's crops. This experience has demonstrated that it is essential that the rivers of Our country be devoted to irrigation, so that the food needs of Our ever-growing population will no longer be left at the mercy of the whims and caprices of the elements." Selected Speeches of HIM Negus Haile Selassie I, page 485

'Experts have forecast that today's rapid population growth will have far reaching consequences in the future. Food production is envisaged to fall short of the need of the world population, thus threatening mankind with the scourge of hunger. As We have said in the past, a view which is shared by many, Ethiopia, besides satiating her local needs, could also become the granary of her neighbouring countries, provided her agriculture is fully developed through modern means. Therefore, it is necessary for Us to continue Our endeavours to improve on our agriculture so that We can realize and develop our great potentials in this regard.' Important Utterances of HIM Haile Selassie I, page 156

'The soil of Ethiopia is a fertile soil. And it is loyal and dependable. Given but the proper attention and care, the Ethiopian soil remains, however much it is tilled, a dependable source of livelihood and dignity and wealth. It is thus ill-advised and indeed unreasonable to abandon the honourable and rewarding livelihood of farming in quest of other forms of employment in urban areas. A renewed dedication and diligence in farming would surely be a venture of more rewarding and lasting value.
It is not only that Ethiopia is ideal for the development of agriculture but the preponderant majority of its people also happen to earn their livelihood from farming. Draft legislations aimed at accelerating the tempo of agricultural development have been therefore prepared, following a thorough study of the existing systems of land administration and tenure in the various governorates-general.' HIM Negus Haile Selassie I

'In our own times, there are those expansionists who by shedding blood, desire to achieve their ambition and by dismembering themselves they are seen as tools for alien interests. Our people from Ethiopia shed blood, to save them from disintegration. Those personalities who believe in freeing a country by secession are selfish and prey to outsiders. We will not accept their motives.' Selected speeches of HIM Negus Haile Selassie I, page 426

"The fundamental obstacle to the realisation of the full measure of Ethiopia's agricultural potential has been, simply stated lack of security in the land. The fruits of the farmer's labour must be enjoyed by him whose toil has produced the crop." Selected speeches of HIM Negus Haile Selassie I, pages 492-3

"The aim of those leaders that is based on ambition for power and personal gain is one with no firm foundation and will, consequently, crumble easily." Selected Speeches of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, page 471

"Every structure must be built on a solid foundation, for those constructed otherwise would soon collapse. The proclamation by which We made land grants to the entire Ethiopian people is the foundation of this scheme." Selected Speeches of HIM Haile Selassie I, page 487

That is funney. When the gas price nearly doubles in North America, which equates to the same birr value; when the price of goods in North America escalalating like a piece of loaf of bread costs you 2 bucks in USA average which equates to 35 bucks in ethiopia, which ironically buys more than 5 loafs of bread. It continues.... The inflation is high wherever you are and it is a global war. Stop your Tultula and hate campaign and ask yourself what can you do about it

It is so absurd that the Ethiopian regime is loosing sleep and working day and night asking the UN to impose economic sanction on Eritrea, while the economic conditions are getting worst and worst in Ethiopia.
Is this what they call crab mentality ? if I cannot have it you cannot have it either.
God have mercy on Ethiopia for its leaders are wishing evil on our neighbours instead of praying for peace and prosperity.

This shows how low our leaders (current) have stooped. This is not Ethiopian ----we call it " Mikeninet" ; I am not sure if they have a word for such thing in TIGRAY and and weither it is seen as a bad thing.

I am interested in the history of Ethiopia and have been to most parts of it in the past.I am sad though, now a days good news about Ethiopia are not coming out any more. What happened to the once great country?

The current regional food inflation rates have been:
Addis Ababa 27.4 %, Afar 30.6 %, Amhara 40.3 %, Benishangul Gumuz 76.8 %, Dire Dawa 39.6 %, Gambella 54.8 %, Harari 33.5 %, Oromia 51.2 %, SNN¬P 64.7 %, Somali 49.1 %and Tigray 24.7 %.

And yet this article telling us shortage of supply is the main reason for inflations. Why is the inflation rate the least in the Tigray region? Why is it too high in the most fertile lands? Is it true Ethiopian drought/famine is a result of politics?I am just wondering... I know the Tigrayan are leading the nation.

According to my freshman economics 101, an increase in economic growth must cause inflation to drop, and a reduction in growth must cause inflation to rise. For Meles and his cronies, the reverse is true. Few months ago Meles and cronies shamelessly told us that the inflation in Ethiopia was due to the remarkable growth of the economy. Now they are blaming the high international commodity prices for the out of control inflation. Ethiopia’s inflation is the second worst in Africa. And yet the crazy PM and his cronies would like us to believe that our economy is growing in double digits while 5million Ethiopians are starving day in day out. We do not have to be economists to notice how inflation affected our life. We live in it and we know it.

Talk about setting priorities! Woyane doesn't care about the poor people of Ethiopia. Their top priority is staying in power by any means necessary! All of you Ethiopians who are against Eritrea for the sake of Woyane, stop being fooled by all the propaganda woyane feeds you. Use your God given minds and sense to make up your mind. Inept Woyane is proving and reaffirming their inability to rule. They have been retailing fertile land and creating famine that never happened in Ethiopia prior to EPRDF.

Always blame their uselessness and incapability on people, rats and chicken and so on.

They never ask for help if anyone can help and bring Ethiopia out of this abominable EPRDF rule.

Their greed for power and money is beyond any bodies believe. They have no love or respect for Ethiopia expect their own greedy looter life.

They even dare to simplify the catastrophe they create as if it is happening elsewhere in the world too. No Famine doesn’t happen in the US, Europe or Africa except in Ethiopia.

There is absolutely no comparison between Ethiopia’s greedy, heartless Woyane rule and the rest of the world. Every government takes care of its people except in Ethiopia. The government in Ethiopia is working against its own.

Minyaregal,

You ask the right question. How long do we carry or, are we forced to an errand of, ESHURUR the beast, on our back.
Ethiopians know every detail of weyane, and her plan: weyanits are there to loot, to kill humilate, and bring the nation to the brink of disaster. It takes the entire Ethiopian public to turn the event around. There must be continual dialogue within all political parties in the country. We must reach a consensus that will guarantee a level playing field for all parties involved. It has to come to this: the details of power sharing, in the POST WEYANE transitional government, has to be worked out in advance before we face off the weyane junta. Such arrengment, I believe, will open the opportunity to set up a national resistance army involving all Ethiopians. It is important that before the removal of weyane the people's struggle must aim to register significant threshold. I think this critical mass is reached when all political parties agree on the details of power sharing, and move forward to establish the National defense army. This and this alone will produce a watershed or turn around event between the people on the one hand and weyane on the other
Above all it takes willingness on all parties to get involved. In particular, political leaders need to be sensitive and willing to compromise in order to reach the common objective: removal of the social cancer. If weyane can dominate Ethiopian politics through the formation of unlikely alliance, such as ANDM, OPDO, SEPDF, truly the rest of Ethiopians who seem to be more resourceful in talent, hold do more to form a unified core to take weaned OUT. That means there must be an attitude change on the part of opposition political parties. There must be a fighting attitude among us instead of empting our minds on the cyber space. Weyane is not all that what it says it is, it want us believe her propaganda by pointing out our lack of unity. If Ethiopians rise in unity against weyane her tone will change ; not only that, the tone of western nations will also alter. May God give us the courage to stand up against injustice now than ever?

The two primary causes of high rate of inflation in Ethiopia’s economy:

First is an increase in demand for goods relative to supply. This means, on Micro level, when more people fight over fewer goods, the price increases hence causing higher rate of inflation. In Ethiopia’s case almost anything and everything is being exported out of the country by greedy private import/exporters leaving goods scarce in local markets. In the USA, Europe, Australia, UAE etc you find every single Ethiopian produce in SURPLUS from spices, berbere, shiro to teff, coffee, butter. Meat privately exported mostly to Arabia and Djibouti, fruits to Sudan and Djibouti even kolo is being snatched away while these same products should have been left in the country for demand to balance supply. Food scarcity leads to higher prices hence the over inflated rate.

* Solution, stop looting the country. Simple as.

Second is decrease in the value of each existing nominal unit of currency. As we’ve read here on Nazret.com the other day re Ethiopian government printing money/devaluing their currency, in order to pay back increased government spending (billions of birr in deficit). When the country’s foreign currency evaporates into thin air as a result of it being transferred out of the country by the A*ame regime, the country surely runs on deficit. Ethiopia keeps printing money and depreciating birr causing each birr to buy fewer goods. That is why birr is fast becoming weaker than ever. More money flooding the economy doesn’t necessarily change relative income of different professionals/workers neither does it change relative purchasing power of the individual citizens. Just valueless paper … Do we even have minimum wage in Ethiopia to adjusted accordingly?

* Solution, stop smuggling billions of Ethiopia’s foreign currency reserves out of the country and into Weyane & Co’s offshore accounts.

Dear fellow Ethiopians:

What are we? We are a nation with our own distinct values and identity who have been able to defeat so many obstacles through history. Our founding fathers Theodros, Menilik, and Yohannes had fought all the odds through times to protect and preserve our unity as a nation. Even the military regiom had fiercely fought for these very causes fundamentally, despite having its own dark sides.

However, our very survival as a nation is slowly being demolished as we speak, particularly under the current administration: the morale of our citizens is drained, our young people are getting accustomed to the use of illicit drugs, lured into the culture and practice of gangsters, etc... similar trends what we are witnessing to occur in places, such as south Africa, in addition to the time to time rise of multi-dimensional social and economic crisis that are infesting us.And our society in general is being induced to losing its once strong morale grounds.

Foreigners are handed out the most fertile land which is supposed to be yours, mine, your children's my children's children, etc... all in all, our country, our hope, our land, our fortress, our sanctuary, and our dream, our vision and our destiny entirely does not seam to belong ours any longer. It appears that it has been taken away from us by a regiom which shamefully functions as an alien.

What can you and I or all Ethiopians for that matter do to effectively combat these cancerous termites? we can do a great variety of things: first and foremost, we MUST stand up together as one voice, all Ethiopians putting aside our differences, whether political, ideological, religion, ethnicity and so on... we must utilize our humanity as our common muscle. we can then turn this energy to do a "necessary" work, the work being the removal of the aparthide-style rule from our shoulder for the last and for all... and ultimately, lay the foundation to a thoroughly united and an exceptionally strong Ethiopia, a suitable home for all of its citizens, from the north to the south; and east to the west alike.

My fellow Ethiopians, think it over and over. This is the only way we can say that we Ethiopians have self respect and human dignity. Thank you.
sincerely,

Mengistu B.

And also you would have understand how hard and difficult it is to lead andgoern a country like Ethiopia. I bet most of you do not even know how to administrer your home and family. Good job Ethiopians who are involved in the making of growth in our country. May God help you in your good intentions and efforts.

To all Amhara, Afar, Somali, Tigray and Omotic people of the Horn!!! Rise up! Rise up against the tyranny that has been bleeding and violating you!!! Rise up in unison and do away with a despotic one-party system and replace with a replica of an American democratic system!!! Let it be the Republics of Amhara, Oromiya, Afar, Ogadenia, Tigray (They may opt to go with Eritrea) and the Omotic People!!! And then let's melt down all the instruments of war and political killings to make hammers and drills for our industrial projects!!! Rise up and send this cactus munching monkey face and his consort back to the joint they came from!!!

And these to my Oromo compatriots!!!!

What we freedom-aspiring Oromos need now is a reassessment of what has been done(both accomplishments and setbacks) and lay down a refreshed path. We all know that we are inching close to the bright day of emancipation. A congress should be called and held soon in order to elect new leaders in all echelons of our vanguard house. We should open offices in every continent and start preparing the world for the impending independence of Oromiya. We should keep our struggle clean of atrocities and being used by opportunistic forces. We Oromos have qualitative and quantitative assets. We should use them wisely and properly. We have more than 30 million Oromos behind us and fondly awaiting our arrival. And more than anything else, the arrival of our beautiful Oromiya. Just look at her. She is so beautiful and resourceful. She is old enough to be my mother and young and robust enough to be my much younger sister. The bells of freedom are tolling for home-coming of her braves and glorious people. God has set up a date of freedom with my beautiful Oromiya in 2014.
Rise up yo'll!!! Rise up!!!!!

Hum!! One more proof that the psuedo economic development we heard so much about is but none existent in TPLF/Woyane Ethiopia.

Engda and Ras Ali, the Woyane thugs. It is preposterous to compare the problems of US economy to Ethiopia's. You must either be an illiterate duds with no job of any kind or you don't know the US. You don't have any idea how economics work in US and how people live here. For that matter, a minimum wage earner in US live a comfortable life than a doctor or engineer in Ethiopia.

All the above talks/writings are FOOLISH and RUBBISH.

The solution is simple. Don't be GREEDY!!!

Pay 10% of your income, we will buy food products and we will send it to ETHIOPIA. Why do you keep looking at Foreigners hand??!!

Most of the diasporas who left their Country were THIEVES, TALKATIVES, CRIMINALS and they left their Country just for their PERSONAL ADVANTAGES. SELFISH!!!

Most of the Rural land Ethiopians who keep FEEDING THE CITIES, never left their Country.

You are living in the Country where the World top SCIENTISTS and INVENTORS are living and working. And still, you blamed our people in back home, when you become INCOMPETENT here in North America.

Blame yourself! Shame!!

Nazrets,

What is it about my response to 100% Ethiopian and Ras Ali that you felt was inappropriate and opted to delete?

Is it the world bank's report re the 3.2 billion dollar annual diaspora remittance to Ethiopia? Or is it the total revenue figure that Ethiopia earns from exports annually, which is well under 3 billion dollars a year?

Oh, let me guess, may be you didn't like the fact that I said the Ethiopian diaspora is the unofficial welfare department of Ethiopia already by contributing more than what the country earns from export annually?

... Or it might be because I stated facts that price increase may have decreased disposable in come in the west but didn't stop people surviving fairly comfortably? While people in Ethiopia barely afford this increase? Price increase is international issue but nobody is dying in the US, Europe etc because of it, that is the difference.

Even if you disagree with the world banks report on remittance figure and slash it by 1 billion, it is still a huge amount of $. After all, top commodity/coffee brings less than 1 billion dollar annually! Also I am sure this figure from world bank is highly likely to increase for 2011/12 ...

May be you started quota/rationing for comments like communist Ethiopia? If that is the case, I suggest rationing starts from Weyane cadres 'cos they earn for their comments out of Ethiopia's currency while ours is free! :):)

Multawa D,..

Yes, you got that right. And on top of that, the worst and uncureable disease the diaspora crybabies suffering from is called INFIRIORITY COMPLEX.
This is a disease which cannot be diagnosed easly but kills slowly, eating one from inside out, and making them suffer from jealousy.
Every success our people and govt achieve back home is a painfull reality they cannot swallow. They keep denying it untill they convince themselves like it is just a nightmare.
So whenever they hear negative news about Ethiopia, they will exaggerate it and make a mountain out of a mol, by cheating themselves. Because this is their version of THERAPY TREATMENT, which keeps them alive day by day, with a dose of lie and fictious fabricated news here and there.
Whatever they do, there is nothing to stop Ethiopians determination from going forward on our growth and transformation plan, on our way to eradicating poverty once and for all, with EPRDF under the great leadershiip of PM Meles Zenawi.
Ethiopia is in a good hand.

The enemy entered Ethiopia disguising as Ethiopians.Time favoured the enemy and invaded Ethiopia.Minutes changed into hours;hourse changed into days and days became monthes, monthes changed into years.Today, the enemy owned, controlled, and run everything and anything that is available below and above the lands,in Ethiopia.

The enemy then quickly moved into villages, towns, cities, and neighbourhoods and broke into homes and vandalized the lives of families, twenty years ago.

The enemy,Zinawian robbers,it is what it is.The enemy has the deepest dislike towards Ethiopians and it prides itself on murdering Ethiopians.Blood hungry, cruel, ugly, and merciless.Ethiopians,we if we pause for a moment and ask ourselves this,If the preagnant woman is denied food, then the baby in her woumb will die.In Ogaden,Ethiopians are dying;babies are burried, women and men are tortured badly and are left to die in pain, and the hunger is deliberately spreadoing to the rest of the country like wildfire because the enemy hates Ethiopians."Either you are with me or you will simply die the way we want you to die." The enemy declared.

The enemy is worse than a devil. So,Ethiopians, what should we do about the enemy?

The enemy is blood hungry and maddeningly hates Ethiopians.Ethiopians, you have been aware of that the enemy stole 8.2 billion dollars that would have saved the lives of babies and their preagnant mothers, but the enemy has hatred for Ethiopians in many ways and chose to deposit the stolen money in billions of dollars in its bank account over the lives of starved babies and mothers.

Ethiopians, the crime of the enemy that it committed on all Ethiopians has now been disclosed;we also have come to know that the British Government has been supplied the enemy with monetory funds and has been assisting the enemy that deliberately starved Ethiopians to death.Ethiopians died, but the enemy did not disolve into thin air;it is extravagantly consuming the blood of Ethiopians while it is denying the gross and despecable crime it had been committed on Ethiopians.Ethiopians, remember, the boy's trace was not still found after his father was shot dead in Ogaden.

We are deeply hurt.Zinawi could not explain our feeling.

Lomzee,..the crazy,

You sound like a street side beggar (pan handler), who pretends as if he is a blind and lame person who can't walk. And all of a sudden when chidren took his collection, opend his eyes, stood up sprinting and chasing behind the children to get his money back.
Whatever you blabber above has a remarkable resemblance of the usual lying dogs on Ethiopian websites, the likes of almaria etc,.fabricated and the none ending deceptive lamentations.
your hiding days are over. You cannot cheat anybody anymore. The sheep cloak you used to hide under couldn't save you.
