Addis Ababa, August 18 (WIC) – Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) said concerted efforts are underway to complete the Gibe III dam project on schedule.

With a view to obtaining first hand appraisal of the project, government officials and stakeholders spearheaded by Alemayehu Tegenu, Minister of MoWE, this week paid a field visit to the project site in the SNNP region.

“Our aim is to accomplish the project on schedule with no delay,” Alemayehu said expressing satisfaction with the pace of the 1,870 megawatt hydropower project.

The Minister hailed efforts of the over 4,000 workers engaged in the over two billion dollars project and guaranteed the unreserved support of the government.

According to MoWE, 46 per cent of the project, which also include a transmission line to Gibe II and Addis Ababa, is now completed. The Ministry expects the dam to be finalized in two years.

“We are 18 centimeters away from completing the tunnel which will take the water to the powerhouse,” Alemayehu said. He said concrete filling for the 143 meter high dam with a capacity to hold 14.7 million cubic meters of water will commence this month.

UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee recently called for a halt of all construction on the Gibe III dam alleging environmental concerns.

The Minister dismissed the committee’s statement.

“This is baseless,” Alemayehu said. “The environmental impact assessment conducted on the project shows that the dam will ensure more benefit to the community by regulating the water flow to Lake Turkana”.

Meheret Debebe, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo), who also took part in the field visit reiterated the overall benefit of the dam.

“The Gibe III dam is clean from any sort of environmental impact and we have findings of various international consultants to prove that,” Meheret said.

The CEO said such findings have been sent to the United Nations (UN) and UNESCo.

Gibe III dam will be a major boost for the government’s GTP target of increasing power generation to 10,000 megawatts from the current 2,000.

The country in April announced the launching of a mega 5,250 megawatts hydropower project dubbed the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on Nile River.

Full steam ahead, baby...

This is for the next generation to hold their heads up high in prosperous nation, no thanks to useless Diaspora critics and White racists who want Africa to remain poor.

The construction of Gilgel Gibe 3 hydropower has to fcacilitated. So that it my be finsheshed ahead of scheduel keeping international standards of dam design. That is the only thing which I support whole heartdly.
Gilgel Gibe III must be finished as soone as possible. In the disguise of environmental protection some anti-Ethiopian goups and individuals are waging a protracted war to keeep black Africans underdeveloped. As they have done in Haiti, they have intensified their exploitation of the African people.
Westerners wish to keep Ethiopians in darkness and under their absolute controll. They use any means to promote their inerest in Africa.
The so called UN and all NGOs have to leave Ethiopia. Let them go hell.

However, TPLF cannot stay in power without their support. That is a big paradox.
Melese Zenawi is installed in Addis Ababa by the great blessing of Washington and London. He is their puppet. His task is to sell and gradually destroy Ethiopia.

Viva Ethiopia!!

GibeIII has a lot resemblance with the HOOVER DAM of the US, near LasVegas, Nevada, which generates and provides power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California.
The dam which was built during THE GREAT DEPRESSION of America was very much controversial, for its potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irregation water and produce hydroelectric power, untill in 1928 congress authorized the project. Though it went through a lot of scrutinies because such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The torried summer weather and the lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Neverthless, it was completed ahead of schedule in 1936, which was started in 1931.
Our dams and especially Gibe III have been a focus of diffrent so called environmentalist etc, groups trying to hinder our developmental progress.
Imagine, if the US didn't go through the hoover dam project, which is responsible for the huge economical boom of Las Vegas, California and Arizona.
The determination and hard work of our brave Men and Women on those projects will continue with the help and guidance of our govt EPRDF, under the brilliant and great leadership of PM Meles Zenawi!!!

now its not like ethiopia is rich or money grows on tree on ethiopia. 2 billion dollar is a lot of money which has to come through loan or aid for ethiopia. i am saying this because i saw on another thread how some of you throw tantrums against china giving loan to ethiopia citing an old palace lady of the king era. fellas its one thing to be against meles but you have to admit even he can be right some times.
i beg you please stop campaigning against the development of ethiopia because of your hate and anger!

Congra to everyone involved in this project. Developing this region is critical to our future. Of course, there will be obstacles. International rivers and others will do everything to keep us back. The Ethio gov deserves a praise for sticking it out, and also spreading the dev projects around the country. I suggest more dev projects. As a matter of fact, that region has been the most resourceful but the least developed region. Meles Zenawi, good job. Finally, being Ethiopian is becoming attractive proposal. The old govs made me listen to Gondere songs to make me feel like Ethiopian. Melles builds a dam in my back yard and does not even force me to be anything. Too good to be true, sometimes. I hope you stay in office one more round. Feudals are on their toes to jump in and start subjugating us again. Until a respectable and responsible party that accepts the current state of federalism and constitution emerges, EPRDF is the only option. If Meles decides to retire, I hope he will be replaced by someone with similar principles and styles.

We are half way through, the countdown is soon to begin, and yet, Ethiopia’s enemies are still chasing the shadows of their conspiracy. Frustrated as they are, they might even commit suicide. Of course, that is their business.

The first electric bulb is going to light the way and the first factory is going to roll out its product, within the coming two years with electricity from GGIII. No doubt about it.

Would it be a day of mourning for the so called environmentalist, who are on the pay role of those who would not want to see Ethiopia use her rivers? As much as Ethioia is concerned, it is going to be a day of jubilation.

The next five years will see the gradual completion of Gibe III by 2%.
It will take forever to even see the final ribbon cutting hence the promised megawatts of electricity generated. LOL!!!!
This is the usual economic propaganda by the defacto regime.

Where credit is due, give it.

I am against EPRDF, but with this project thumps up. Well done. Please do not or never listen to the NGOS or I. rivers or Turkana peers. Never listen to any foreigner who try to tell you what to do. Tell them it is none of their business. We Ethiopians do not interfere in the affaires of any country, likewise, they must leave us alone.

Having said the above, until EPRDF finish shabia and allow Ethiopia to use its natural ports, still I will do all I can to remove EPRDF from Ethiopia.

Shabia tried to bomb addis ababa, but you are baby sitting shabai still? I do believe the only time you will listen to Ethiopians is when Shabia blows the office of Meles. Meles Zenawi will understand after his office is blow. I do believe it is coming. That is the next plan of shabia. He will blow Meles in his office and then it will be late. According to source, addis ababa is now infested with OLF than any time in the histor of Ethiopia. Do not worry you will get it and you will understand but it will be too late then.

For all positive minded Ethiopians - lets go and swarm the UNESCO website and make a case against their recent decision over the Gilgel Gibe III project. We got to tell all the people who have misconceived the rationale and benefit and environmental risks of this project that this specific project is one of the game changing mega project in our beloved Ethiopia and has very minimal environmental impacts that are all planned to be mitigated in the course and end of the project.

Enemy of Ethiopia have never slept to always pull Ethiopia's leg down so it will never get out of abject poverty and backwardness.

It is unacceptable to see a mother die coz birth of complication coz the doctor onsite can't make an operation on her coz there is no power in the operation room. It is unacceptable by any token to see the children die everyday coz there is no light to do the basic medical lab works coz there is no power in the hospital lab. It is unacceptable to the say the least to lay off all these 4000 employees proudly working with the project in just over night time period.

Please go to UNESCO website and guide them to the right path so they see things in a fair way.

We Ethiopians treasure Lake Turkana more than UNESCO does. We want Lake Turkana to be there thriving fully along with surrounding our brother communities for indefinite future. There is not or wouldn't be any intent to do harm on Lark Turkana and the Lake Turkana Communities. The whole fuss around this project that it will negatively impact Lake Turkana is a baseless allegation.

Yes there is no Oromo without Ethiopia; there is no Amahr or other ethnic group without ETHIOPIA. Ever one of you fights for your stomach not for the people. You do not like what you have outside in Ethiopia and you wish to rule the people. NO NO NO NO. If you love your people give your money and invest in your country now not tomorrow. I know there is no straight way but you can bring change by put a milestone of prosperity not declaring or prepare war for the next generation.

Ahoi, our beloved Ethiopia must march forward to readicate poverty, social decay and economic backwardness once and for all....

The steady progress we are making bit by bit will definitely add to our stability and Ethiopian Hegerawi identity thereby consolidating our Ethiopianism.

As abject poverty gradually but surely disappears, Ethiopians will have ample opportunities to educate their children with new skills and scientific knowledge, will be able to travel a lot among ourselves, interact in unison, know and understand eachother, forge a single Ethiopian Hagerwai identity :-)

Our poverty has been the single source of our instability -- Well, we have now recognized it as such as it has been the primary instrument of our enemies to attack us using proxy interest groups like the R'Terans as represented by Fascist-Shabiya!

Let us resurrect our beloved Ethiopia from coast to coast -- Our century has already arrived and we are working hard towards its fulfillment: This particular hydro electric power must be completed successfully :-)

Crap. The Gibe project has been dead and abandoned by all of its financiers including Italy.

Italy was the only country willing to finance and build but due to Woyane corrupted cadres and inept and poor so called engineers everything had collapsed.
