Ethiopia reacts to abuse of nanny by Gaddafis
Source: Africa Report
Ethiopia has expressed disappointment over the ill-treatment of its national by one of ousted Libyan Muammar Gaddafi’s daughters in law.
Cable television, CNN this week broadcast footage of Shweyga Mullah, an Ethiopian maid who was allegedly scalded with hot water by the wife of Gaddafi’s fourth son Hannibal.
She was found writhing in pain at a hospital in Tripoli after she was reportedly abandoned by Hannibal’s Lebanese wife Aline Skaf.
Skaf was part of the Gaddafi family that fled to Algeria last Friday.
Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government was informed about the abuse on Wednesday.
Discussions with the victim’s family were held the following day.
“The government of Ethiopia will make every necessary effort to bring the victim from Libya and get her due compensation for the damage,” Foreign Ministry's spokesman Dina Mufti said on Thursday.
Narrating her ordeal, Shweyga said Skaf poured boiling water on her for failing to keep a child quiet.
“She took me to a bathroom,” Shweyga told CNN.
“She tied my hands behind my back, and tied my feet.
“She taped my mouth, and she started pouring the boiling water on my head."
Shweyga said she was being scalded with boiling water for the second time after she was hired by the Gaddafis as a nanny.
She also revealed she was never paid by the Gaddafis and had to foot her own hospital bills.
The Foreign Affairs ministry said government was gathering all the necessary information about the incident.
Ethiopia repatriated hundreds of its citizens from Libya after rebels took up arms to fight Gaddafi over six months ago.
Officially, over 500 Ethiopian were reported to be living in Libya before the conflict started.
