Ethiopia Says Global Concerns Over Hydro Plan Won’t Hurt Funding

Oct. 10 (Bloomberg)
-- Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said he doesn’t expect international concerns over the country’s hydroelectric program to hurt financing plans.

“Because we are funding most of our projects from our own resources, it should not affect it,” Zenawi said today in an interview in Oslo.

Ethiopia said last month it planned to offer more bonds to finance the 5,250-megawatt Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam after selling 7 billion birr ($408 million) of debt domestically in the past six months. Ethiopia, source of the main tributary of the Nile River, started building the hydro plant in April as it seeks to become a regional power exporter.

We are not going to be blackmailed by pseudo-environmentalists. I fully support Ethiopian PM's stand on this issue. We will build the dams, with or without external support, because it is absolutly the right thing to do and because we have no other alternative. This is the time to stand united and support the Ethiopian Renaissance and the fight against poverty.
We have already built Tekeze, Tana-Beles, Gibe I & II despite rivers of crocodile tears from some "sira fet" activists.
Ethiopia shall prosper!

For centuries Abay took Ethiopian natural resources, minerals & fertile soil to our enemies who even don`t say thank you. On this millinium it started flowing with poor Ethiopians money too.

Shortage of electric power has been a major setback in Ethiopia, but future small business, industries and many different services are not possible without it. The Abay Dam is one of the most important assets of development in Ethiopia. Politics and differences, is irrelevant her. I think the Dam is one of the few national values that must be uniting Ethiopians. Such huge project needs sacrifice, and no excuse can keep anyone away from either supporting or participating.

During his opening speech to the joint session of EPRDF’s parliament, president Girma W/Giorgis said Ethiopia scored 11.4% economic growth in 2003 EC. He never mentioned about the millions of Ethiopians who are starving day in day out. He simply said that EPRDF was able to avert famine. He never mentioned about the ever increasing inflation.
How come a country with a double digit economic growth still begs emergency food assistance to feed millions of its citizens? How come a country says its economy is growing at a double digit rate while close to 47% of its annual budget is coming from foreign aid and loan? How can an economy that was “on the verge of collapse” last January suddenly grows at a rate of 11.4%? It just doesn’t make sense.

Government comes and goes. But Ethiopia always be there and we the true Ethiopians have to be strong and defend what our people's need. No one, I say, no one tell us what to do when it comes to ABAY. It is in our blood ,and DNA that we have to build a dam. No matter what theses chiggaarams weyannes stands, we will build the dam. It has nothing to do weyannes running the show because deep inside we know that the true Ethiopians will fill their dream .

Stope beggeriseim.
Throw out parasites charities and NGO from Ethiopia soil.
Death to weyannes chiggaarams.

Get this. When woyane undertakes developmemt projects in Eth. It is not out of love for the country, but in order to STEAL. If they do not develop the country there is nothing to steal. Remember, the $8. 3 bill. deposited in foreign banks. How else can you explain the anti Eth. activities of these bandits. It is a contradiction. On the one hand they have made the country landlocked, paying billions of dollars in port fees,(this one of the reason why imported products are expensive) giving away land to Sudan, renting very arable land for decades to foreigners for peanuts etc.

what does he mean international concerns will not hurt the financing plan???? it will definately affect it, we have seen it and nobody specially western governments are not interested in funding it. so far they have managed to raise less than 10% from bond sale, which i don't think will keep on going. At some point He is going to eat what he said. Infact that will be the reason why the dam will not be finished on time.

Long live Ethiopia!

First you have to feed your people before building nile for as much money when you say help me, my people are hungry, it's just jokes for white men and the first building rather small dams that Eritrea does and save the rain all the time and grow food for your people the rest you have time to do stuff but dont shame Africa ppl in hunger all the time since you were in power, you might punish Ethiopian for when only the Tigray ppl was hunger long time ago, others were not and you just want to prove them

Congratualations !!!!!!!!!

This is what Ethiopia was waiting for centuries to achieve. Our previous leaders never dare to do it.
Who did it? Now. I leave you to answer.
Weather you love or hate this little
short man and his partners in governing did it.
Let us gave him credit.
Ethiopians should understand what is
significance did Dam has to their lives.
Dam is key for making Ethiopia rich.
to build factories and irrigate your land. every country need energy.
we can not afford to buy oil to do
that and we did not need oil either.
Because we have Dams

"Imported inflation"? Why then is the inflation so low in Kenya? Or is Ethiopia uniquely tied to the international economic order? Oh, Meles Zenawi you are born not to admit mistakes and to blame others for everything. Whose fault is it that you are a short person, Mr. know it all?

I think we could have done better raising the fund much more higher than it is right now..

I also belive most ethiopians are not buying more bonds because ,ot the rumor going around...

The rumor is once the DAM PROJECT IS COMPLETED THE EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT WILL DESTROY THE DAM WITH IT'S AIRFORCE POWER..

When i tried to convience many ethiopians to buy bond ,they keep mentioning this rumor followed by many more quesitions such as.

What will we do if the egypt government attacks the dam?

Do we have the air superiority to retaliate?

If egypt and sudan agree to halt the dam project, dont that make it difficult for us to fight egypt?

Why did the sudan government changed its mind in the last minute?

What guarantee and agreement do we have once the dam is completed it will not be attacked?

Do we have the resources, fire power,to defend the dam or any would be invaders?

Would poverty stricken ethiopians can they fight these invaders with wholeheartly for a very long time?

Why should i buy the bond that is gonna mainly benefits the few rich foreigners who are running huge factories?

Why cant the government put its priority building small irrigation first and formost?

Why Most of us are forced to buy the bond when inflation and living standard is too expensive in ethiopia?

What if egypt, sudan government set a base in ERITREA to counter attack ethiopia future effort to complete all the dams?

Dont setting up bases by egyptitan and anti ethiopians WOULD NOT give EPLF financial supports it badly needs from these anti ethiopia? ETC ETC ETC types of quesition are being asked from all types of segement of ethiopia society.

Although we dont know thier TRUE AGENDA is the questions that had being asked above from ordinary, patriot, oppositinons, and even some government supporters need some WELL assurance answer.

My answer is by the bond and lets make it happen. While also addressing the underlying issues, deveolopment to better our ETHIOPIA SOCIETY....

If true as 'Natsnet Ethiopia' mentions above, woyane has 8.3 Billion Dollars deposited in foreign banks, why not use that money and make that Dam real?

Why Meles go round and discuss with neighbours/foreigners, if he is 100% sure of NO any human or environmental consequences in future?

'Agazi tgray' for the first time seems to listen ppls voice, amazing:)
So Agazi, do you have any guarantee to the people of Ethiopia, that the Dam wont burst somehow? How can you influence Ethios and collect more CASH?

It doesn't matter what your name is, but at least this time you come up with a good topic to discuss. BRAVO!!!!
This was what we asked the so called gov. for the last 20 years.
If the gov. and their cadres have the ability to discuss with open's eye, it would be have been a good TOPIC.
But they dare not to do so.
Therefore my sister don't belief this gov. because they are there only for their own interest not for the our country interest.

AGAZI WOMAN screwed up big time, you mentioned all the question people ask before buying bond, and failed to answer your question and suggested to just buy the bond. if you don't have the answer why even mention it?

Meles Get out!! You Lair!!!!

100% ethiopian

The 100% shabia servant who doesn’t even know how to use capital E for Ethiopia.

Just because you are in love to embezzle Ethiopian resources and worship who ever is coming to exploit and abuse Ethiopia you are not fooling anyone. You smell a Woyane rat who worships shabia.

You are mad because I expose your master Meles the ignorant dictator’s lie. Your weak Woyane side forces you to resorts to the same cheap talk and insult. It is people like you who are the obstacle to progress in Africa.

Today it is only the few Woyane puppets who are like you are crying to be called Ethiopians when the rest who don’t have doubt of themselves are trying to reinstate the dignity and integrity that is lost under Meles the liar looter.

Spare as from the false nationalism. You don’t have no respect to Ethiopia.

Down with Meles and people like you!!!
