Ethiopia's Firehiwot Dado Wins Women's Title in New York City Marathon
For more than half of the women’s race at the New York City Marathon, Mary Keitany of Kenya appeared to be turning conventional wisdom about this course on its head. She was flying through the early miles, ignoring all cautionary tales of the toll the course can take, seemingly intent on shattering the course record. By the 15-mile mark, her lead over the nearest competitor was nearly two and a half minutes.
But convention turned out to hold quite a lot of wisdom. Keitany could not keep up her pace, which started slowing as she crossed the Queensboro Bridge and entered Manhattan for the final 10 miles. Where most runners get a boost from the raucous First Avenue crowds, Keitany found only pain.
Firehiwot Dado of Ethiopia was running a much smarter race behind Keitany. She teamed with three other runners and eventually with only Buzunesh Deba, who is also from Ethiopia but lives and trains in New York, and they began their comeback.
