Ethiopia: Eskinder Nega is nazret.com's Person of The Year
Eskinder Nega, an Ethiopian journalist and political prisoner, was arrested earlier this year for publishing an online column calling for an end to torture in Ethiopian prisons and a halt to the imprisonment of dissidents. On his weekly column, that is syndicated in several Ethiopian websites, he had written constantly about the respect for freedom of expression and democracy. But in today's Ethiopia, calling for the respect of freedom of expression is equated as a 'terrorist act' and is punishable by death.
This is not the first time Eskinder was arrested by the tyrannical regime of Meles Zenawi. Back in 2005, Eskinder and his wife Serkalem Fasil, both newspaper publishers, were charged with treason following Ethiopia’s disputed 2005 elections, along with dozens of journalists, human rights activists, and opposition leaders, and spent seventeen months in jail. While in custody, Serkalem gave birth to their first child.
Eskinder and his family could have easily moved to the United States right after they were released from prison in 2005. Instead he chose to stay in his homeland and advocate for the rule of law, freedom of expression and respect for human rights, with his only weapon, the mighty pen. Eskinder spent a large part of his childhood in suburban Washington, D.C and is a legal resident of the United States.
For all the contributions that Eskinder has made in the peaceful struggle to bring good governance and democracy in Ethiopia, we are proud to name Eskinder Nega, the 2011 nazret.com Person of The Year.
At the end of your announcement you said -
“For all the contributions that Eskinder made in the peaceful struggle to bring good governance and democracy in Ethiopia, nazret.com is proud to nominate Eskinder Nega our person of the year.”
I recognize & admire Eskinder’s courageous stance however lets not kid our selves – no so called “peaceful struggle” works against a vicious junta which with out mercy kills and tortures any one stands on their way. So, if you are trying to create the next Gandhi, I’d say you are absolutely way out of reality because Woyane is a different kind of enemy. Only AK 47 would do the Job.
Right on, Nazret!
Free Eskandar and all political prisoners.
Eskindir is exceptionally good in what he does and knows what and how to do things.
It is easy to talk the talk.
But walking the walk is a different thing.
Why is that so many people talk about AK-47s while not willing to fight. You want the poor to fight for you ?
So many talks, so many meetings and nothing is done on the ground. Just dreaming.
GOOD JOB “Nazret.com’ our Free Democratic Forum of Discussion !!!
Heroic True Ethiopians standing for the Rights of the opressed Peoples
deserved such Great Recognation .
VIVA ESKINDER NEGA !!!!
FREEDOM FOR ETHIOPIA !!!!
MOTE LE LEBA WOYANE KENE BANDAWOTCHU !!!!!
The MESHETA BET ADARIWOCH have tried everything what they can in their power on their pal talk family dinner, they finished what they are trying to say about Ethiopia.
This the so called elcad pal talk cyber chat room 24/7 had zerafed sile hagerachew sile DC. (not about Ethiopia) Ethiopia is different than what they are talking, and they are not an Ethiopian. Ethiopia is growing faster than ELCAD’S pal talk, however, keep dreaming, we are listening and watching about which one is truth?
You better go to your cyber website ECADF.
He is a hero. He dared to face such a cruel and barbaric government that tortures and kills. And he has always kept a high moral standard not only about what he advocates for, but also how he advocate it. I read his article once where he appreciated Meles’s ability as a leader, but he also dared to tell Meles that now is the time to go and Meles is the person standing in Ethiopia’s way towards democracy.
Way to go nazret, God bless you Eskandar.
Tout est pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes
In most Africa government means looting and killing.
Govt. Should not be regarded as superior to the governed. But only as organ of the ppl.
Govt. Should not be consider themselves as superior to the ppl. But only as a servant of the ppl.
It is a ppl’s money they receive every month in order to stay in power and therefore it is the gov. Obligation to satesfy the ppl. Need.Even the president and Priminster should be consider as a servant of the ppl, nothing more.
But this is an illation dream that never happen in today’s Ethiopia where the elit shift from dusty Sudan refugees camps to Addis Ababa of heaven where they are nw tuning a shifta like police by turning the gun they received from all sorts of charities and NGO, to TERRIORISE the hard working Ethiopians and silence their freedom by their devil guns. These chigarrams Devil believers are now gone to far and forgot where they came from. It is always the poor who have to suffer the consequences of our good or stupid action, not those who have given us good or stupid advice. The weyannes manipulate the need of the mass, and the mass stomach is stronger than these chiggarams weyannes. Degrade is weyannes important defence weapon.
If one takes the hump from the hunchback, one takes away his sprit.
And if one gives sight to an Ethiopian blind, he sees so much
evil in Ethiopia today that he curses the healer.
When my eyes fly from present weyannes to the past , they see the same. I walked among men and women of EPRP heroes, of the fragment, the future of my vision, to abolishing the present and creat a mere bridge towards a better future that can be created through exertion of the will.
What we have in today’s Ethiopia is an evil gust, is sitting in our home, eating us like a parasites slowly. These evils are , hoddams, weyannes and their parasites charities and NGO.
These we have to get ride of by any means starting with neighbour by spraying DDT where they step, and sitting .
You hypocrite. Why do not you pick the AK 47 you talk about in your crap comment above, and haste to the bushes in Ethiopia to try to unseat the government of Ethiopia? Do not be wordy We have a lot more like you. If you mean what you are saying, you should have been in Ethiopia roaming in the bush.
Nazretoch, its your right to name Eskinder as man of the year, the millennium or whatever, but this man is not a journalist. He is covert enemy of the country. He is proved to have been working with vicious terrorists like Elias Kifle, Berhanu nega and Tamagn Beyene. You proved that you are no longer imparial, and instead work to propagate the objectives of the opposition.
Nazretoch WONDATA!!! HE IS DEFINITELY A PERSON OF THE YEAR IF NOT THE CENTURY. His imprisonment tells us woyanes are pissing in their pants.
FREE ESKINDER NEGA AND ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS, YOU PUSSIES!!!
He deserve it!
Free Eskinder nega and all other prisoners, and put Melese and his accessories in the darkest cell before they get their ultimate justice, death by injection.
To the Nazrets:
Could you please show an elementary respect to us your website visitors? I can feel a total ignorance from you to your visitors who usually show a humble approach and respect to your website.
Yes he should be…… I agree…..among others
We Ethiopians also name the worst person’s of the year…..
The following are criminals, who are responsible for bringing so much misery in the country.
Meles Naziawi & his wife
why am I not surprised?
I have expressed my disagreement with the Government of Ethiopia in the arrest and trial of Mr. Eskinder from its outset. I have read some of the articles written by this person on this or other websites and found nothing of material suggesting any terrorism in their messages or contents. I politely asked the office of PM Meles to release Ato Eskinder and also provide him with means so he can support his family. As a father myself, I have been very saddened just thinking how that angelic toddler can be emotionally tormented because no one would be able to really explain to him what happened to his dad. Officials at the higher echelons should sift through some of these accusations to make sure that they were not logged by too enthusiastic agents at the street level. I can understand that Ethiopia is a very fragile union where trouble-making groups are poised at periphery to stir chaos and unprecedented bloodshed and such mistake will fall smack into the hands of their propaganda machinations. I hope the judges will exonerate this innocent citizen as soon as possible. And as I said before I don’t know about the other individuals because I never heard about them. Again, I politely ask the Government of Ethiopia to cut Ato Eskinder loose as soon as the case comes to a close.
As always, I thank the editors of this website in posting my comment. In the meanwhile, my wife and I along with rest of my family would like to wish you all my dear countrymen here abroad and back home A Merry Christmas and a rewarding New Year!!!!
i feel sorry for this guy, because not many people in ethiopia even know who he is let alone the fact that he is in jail. but i admire him for not confessing infront of a camera and spilling his gut like the others so called “ethiopians” do.
I agree Eskinder is exceptionally good in what he does. I also said I admire and fully recognize his courageous stand against the Woyane junta. I am also in peace with Nazret’s choice to make him Person of the year. It is well deserved & commendable selection. No, body questions all of these so, I don’t understand yours and others foul cry.
If you read my comment carefully, my problem is with the Moderator’s assertion of the rationale behind their Choice not the person [Eskinder] himself. “Peaceful Struggle” works only against a tolerant and democratic power that would at least have the shred of audacity to listen and reconsider its atrocious endeavor to wards a positive course. Time after time the Woyane tyrants made it clear with their dreadful action that they have no intention to hold free election, denounce their iron feast style of governing, accommodate free press, establish neutral army, police and security, abandon their divide and conquer method, respect Ethiopia’s sovereign integrity; and abolish corruption. Those swayed by the notion of “peaceful struggle or protest” end up to their grave or if lucky in Kality prison. They were dealt with merciless and swift action. Many of them silenced with out a trace. Eskendir’s fate was no different. This was the basis for my weariness against peaceful struggle.
You said “You want the poor to fight for you?” that is a funny contention if not silly. The poor do not have to fight for me. I am doing awesomely well with my life. Poor Ethiopians at home have to fight for themselves. They are the ones who have been suffocated by Woyane’s iron feast dictatorship. They are the ones have to earn their freedom from these day time hooligans at any cost. Yes, all of us share some burden of responsibility to help our people. Does the Arab spring ring the bell? If the Tunisians, Egyptians, Yemenis and Libyans can do it why not Ethiopians? The lone reality you and the likes have difficulty to understand is – REVOLUTION starts from with in not the other way around. Those who suffered, conquered and subjugated must say enough against their fear. Then, we will see a revolution whether it is similar to Tahrier square or by AK 47.
The major measuring stick for the strength of the regime in Addis is the weakness of the opposition. In addition, the support the regime gets from elites from other ethnic groups who have chosen to work with TPLF selling their souls for their personal advantages, and Western powers who have stood with the regime because the opposition is in disarray, are the other factors to be considered.
Just solve these problems mentioned above, and the regime will come down crumbling like a tower of cards. As long as the opposition is not committed, principled and every wannabe leader dreams of becoming the next Ethiopian emperor, and do not want to cooperate with others to bring down dictatorship, MZ is here to stay.
People like Eskinder Nega can give everything they have, including even their precious lives, for the sake of freedom and equality for their people, but as long as the majority of Ethiopian elites do not see beyond their villages and their tribes and their personal interest, nothing is going to happen. There are too many power thirsty Ethiopians, and this is the main reason we have so many mainly ethnic-based parties, as if the Ethiopian identity many of us cherish is not enough. Our politicians have failed over the last twenty years to take the small step forward towards unity that would help them confront dictatorship in Ethiopia, and I am afraid that such sacrifices by our gallant journalists and others could be in vain.
Therefore, TPLF is strong because the opposition is weak, and MZ is going to stay because the opposition has yet to find its Mandela, who will arouse in them the sentiment of one united Ethiopia that will be beyond and above the grip of one ethnic group, big or small. The West will continue to support the regime, because useless insurgents continue to explode a bomb or two here and there without hurting the regime. OLF and ONLF have succeeded in pushing the West into MZ’s lap, and they have failed to understand that times have changed, the cold war is dead, and reactionary Arab governments have been deposed and IA has no future, and therefore, they will have no support whatsoever. They will be labeled as terrorists and they become an obstacle for peaceful struggle, which will be supported fully by the West.
Let us hope that Eskinder Nega and others will find their freedom soon, and that Western leaders would finally see and correct their hypocritical stand concerning democracy and the rule of law in Ethiopia.
Hyena what the hell are you talking about ignorant KILIB banda !!!Eskender and all the guys you are treating as terrorists used only their pens against your leba master not an AK 47 rifles as your bandit blood sucker agazis are actually using against the peoples .The only
enemies of the country are first your Leba master ,second his evil wife looting the country with her Mafiosis Firm ‘EFFORT’ ,the bandit Agazis ,his paid sold bandas and all of you ,the TPLF THUGS,Aiga Gangs and TIGRE MAFIA MEMBERS !!!
Eskinder is part of a long line of Existentialist unbending souls who will never surrender to tyranny and opression. Lech Walesa, Anatoly Sakharov, Nelson Mandela, and many more withstood the tides of tyranny and kept their dignity against unbelievable onslaught and barbarism. But one thing is for sure. In the end, the bitter end, they always win.
“When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall, think of it, ALWAYS.”
The great Mahtma Gandhi.
End the ethnic Bantustan.
