Director Yonie Solomon's 'An Ethiopian Love'

Cultural pride is and will always be on trend, but even more it’s what’s right. Removing the typical Hollywood standards, such as an over-the-top urban character or ghetto baby mamas, Yonie Solomon decided to construct an indie, classic love story, An Ethiopian Love, that salutes his heritage and has a universal relativity. Starring as the lead character, Desta, Yonie plays alongside rising on-screen talent Helen Gedlu, Augisha Tesfasilase, Sara Gebremedhin, Jonathan Woldaub and Syed Bukhari. From the trailer alone, this romantic comedy seems loaded with good-hearted humor, relationship drama and depth. While building great content on the back of guerilla marketing, rehearsals and the like was no easy task, Solomon was determined to send a message. Sure, the Ethiopian community will be able to directly identify with the film, but all first generation persons or immigrants of this country will see themselves in this feature that tips its hat to self-identity.

Ayeee...Asafari!

I think this generation is the most confused one! I do not see one thing in this video that reminds me my beautiful & well-mannered Ethiopians (both men & women). Mr. Solomon has no any idea about the Ethiopians! I, for one, cannot relate to this movie.

In fact, I felt like watching another ghetto movies that usually depicts black people with WRONG stereotypes (i.e. shallow). In fact, I can see many things that remind me about Ethiopians or Ethiopian family from watching "My Big Greek Fat Wedding" movie.

Mr. Solomon, your intention is good but your depiction of Ethiopians is STUPID, WRONG & BOARING!

I will not watch this movie if it is shown for free!

NAZRET, CAN YOU PLEASE IGNORE THE MUSCIANS, ACTORS AND MODELS AND POST ANY THING THAT HAS TO DO MORE WITH DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION?

Good job, Yoni Solomon.
In my opinion this line of writing and directing is much superior than what you were involved before. I had seen a video where you act as a ladies man and also had directed that dealt with a 'gangster life', I suppose.

I wish you good luck

The diaspora needs to play such a posetive role, we need to take distance from the toxic diaspora and work hard to improve posetive image of our motherland Ethiopia.

Once again thanks yonie, keep up the good work, I hope the toxic diaspora elders like prof Almariam will take a lesson from young generation of Ethiopians.

This is a trash ! Ethiopians are romantic like in Classical Greece. We do not speak about sex with our women the way others do like in this film. The film is a disgrace and does not represent ethiopian love. Ethiopians are romantic, emotional bit silent. They do not brag about sex. A very bad film and very badly done. I was depressed after watching that bit. I a m told to accept what I am not. Ethiopians are decent people and we oppose such smear campains about that great people. Every body these days is trading with ethiopians. The Jamaicans think they better know about Ethiopia than ethiopians. N body in Ethiopia has rasta cups. These rasta style hairwhich we see today are very disgusting because it gives the picture ethiopians are ukempt and disorderely. The Rasta hair style were important during the war against Italy (1936 - 1941). The patriots kept their hair long and unkempt because they did not have the facilities to cut their hair or the circumstances dictate on them to follow the Rasta style. I like when African-americans and all blacks in the Diaspora do identify themselves with Ethiopian Heritage, which is also their legacy. But these should reflect the contemprory ethiopian culture.

In “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” the film was everything about Greece and Greeks, their merits and their weaknesses. It was funny and cleverly acted in order to convey the right message in the right way.

Concerning “Ethiopian love”, the only thing Ethiopian is the name and nothing else, at least from the few minutes of the film we could see. It is essentially an Afro-American film with an Ethiopian title and Ethiopian faces. If the whole film continues in the same manner, my advice is that they should work next time for a real Ethiopian film, if the film is going to have anything to do with Ethiopia.

Study the subject and your audiences first and act accordingly, unless you are interested only in the new generation who knows nothing about Ethiopia. Those of you who do not know Ethiopia, learn about the country and the people, and those of you who have dumped you Ethiopian identity on the same day you set foot in America, try to recover from your delusion. You are born Ethiopian and you will remain Ethiopian, whatever you do otherwise. It is in your genes and not in your surroundings. Try to be a real Ethio-Americans, with a very big dose of Ethiopia, and not Afro-American, because Ethiopian is and will always remain your identity. Be what you are (Ethiopians) and avoid imitating other cultures.

Anyway, I congratulate the team for their endeavor, and I wish the group real success in their future ventures.

Tom and C'est moi senait, I wonder why you keep on critisising those who work hard to improve the movie industry in Ethiopia. Yonie and his friends have produced such a fantastic movie, its time to support posetive minded ethiopians, Yonie and all those who participated in the movie are role models for those who want to pursue the acting career.

Tom and C'est moi, please leave your grabage ideas in your ghetto, try to work hard and do some thing for Ethiopia. Ethiopia needs men and women who can walk the walk, yonie is exemplary, a young man capable of walking the walk. I am sure he wont be discouraged by loosers like Tom and C'est moi senait who enjoy dragging people down to their ghetto. They always enjoy insulting every ethiopian who works to improve the image of Ethiopia. TOM and senait always support those toxic ethiopians who tell us to stop investing , those who tell us to boycott ethiopian airlines, those who tell us to stop buying bonds for the millenium dam.

Tom, hagos

I don't understand what you people are so upset about? As the article states the movie is about a 23 years old first generation Ethiopian American. Its about his tribes and tribulations in life. Unless you were born here or came to this country at a young age
Of course you cannot relate yourself with the story line. However, you are entitled to your opinion but I suggest you give this guy a chance. I still remember the poem he performed about ETHIOPIA at the Ethiopan soccer tournament in Seattle In 2005 I believe. The dude is real. The whole stadium was filled with loud scream when he did his thing.

You people are so busy trying to depict a perfect image of ethiopia and Ethiopians, but we are far from perfect. We are faced with problems other races are affected by and as long as we ignore those we will never move forward.

You old folks need to realize that the divorce rate among habeshan couple in America has skyrocketed.( Those are not the couple that came to America as an adult) How about that ?? Huh.

I'm sure you wife bitters don't want me to get started on the domestic violence and how many of you have been charged. Thanks to public records!!! Ethiopians are loving, romantic, and bla bla bla.....pls, give it up for once and try to fix what's broken. Get out of the state of denial please!

Well, we can not denie that Ethiopian diaspora is growing in fast past in west. Those of you who are criticizing this movie I can relate why. Because it is simply you are a first generation here in the west, you still have the identity crisis. Those actor are no longer have an obligation to be what you want them, they adopt the culture, and the live style the grew. In fact I give them a thumps up for these a good quality movie. This is a first step hopefully, we can learn from the past and improve the quality of the movie industry of Ethiopia.

God bless !!

Taking such initiative in ways one knows is a major step. A partial reflection of children of immigrants, the way they or their friends see it. Even in this small clip, the message is reasonably positive. Let critics of all kinds say everything possible because true artists pay attention for future improvisation based on criticism as well.

One of the actresses is familiar from the Ethiopian drama made n Addis, GEMENA ( I watched on line here in States). Are they promoting current Ethiopia as well intentionaly or otherwise? Well, show it like it is; atleast a part of it does look like a continuation of the old Addis of post 2nd World War modernized verision with some add-on and touch up.

The die hard politicians, humanitarians/journalists/historians show us the degraded % of population, the true struggle of the masses as is currently. What matters is the true conviction that is generated from a genuine feeling, dedication, participation and consistency. As the mentioned people, might change our world so will such form of art. If we go crazy for Teddy Afro with all his well rooted Amharic lyrics and talent, why not give such form a chance as well?

If Ethiopia was the poster face of skeletons of bodies in famine, flies, death, and endless murder ( as provisional socialist)--a great scene for the anti- communist Western society/media in the 80s, such a commercialied message could be the new pulse for the generation born out side. Then, be it.

Suggestion: All modern Ethiopian films in English need sub-titles in Amharic and if possible including other etnic languages as well.

It is a new generation. Call it generation whatever. Actually, why don't we try to coin an Amharic word for this generation. Who are they?

Yonie keep up the good work, some of our people are very retarded and they don like to see people rising to the top. They keep on trying to drag down those who try to go up.

My grand father used to tell me to take care of idiots, he understood their modusoperendi, I thought it was just another old mans saying, but its not I even saw it in this forum. So brother, be strong, we shouldn't be discouraged. Its time to work hard, ignore the stupid and rise high and high.

The majority of people will be glad to see your movie, I can assure you, millions of Ethiopians in Ethiopia specially in Addis Ababa will be ready to watch your movie. Forget those idiots who keep on spreading hatred here, this is a place for losers to express their dissatisfaction with live. kkkk I mean it there are so many sick people who need help here. Some are schizophrenic, some suffer from split personality disorder..you know there are different kinds of people....last but not least some are Ethiopian's kkk's kkkk true some see things from their ethnic point of view.

Yonie, ignore the losers and keep on focusing on your work, am sure you will achieve it, you are a rising young star and movie director in our 20's...well done

Those few individuals who try to drag you down to their level don deserve even a response, they came from the ghetto and they will stay ther trying to recruit members to their community. When I say ghetto I was not refereing to the actual ghetto, in the real ghetto people fight hard to get out of it, but the diaspora ghetto sounds to be psychological and not material. They keep on spatting and provoking everyone, but they are not ready to take on a real fight with the fabricated "enemy" They are born again morons. They are rebels with no causes. They keep on biting anyone who is succeeding, they crtitisise succesffull politicians, athlets, businessmen, army generals etc.

Yonie solomon is an ethiopian american Actor, poet, singer, writer, editor, director… the list of things that Yonie Solomon is capable of is endless. Yonie, born and raised in Seattle, Washington began writing and acting at an early age.

Five years ago Yonie moved to LA to get a taste of what the media business was like. After starring as an extra in many TV shows, working as a casting director, and directing/producing his own TV show, Yonie relocated back to Seattle finding that he was not able to do what he really wanted to do. Unlike most people his age, he does not want his work to be about meaningless drama and materialistic lifestyles. Rather, his work reflects his experiences as a first generation Ethiopian American. His lyrics are insightful, inspiring and meaningful.

For the past six months Yonie has been working on his first independent film called, “An Ethiopian Love.” The movie is about a young man born and raised in America and his experiences while visiting Ethiopia for the first time. This movie was filmed in Los Angeles, Seattle and back home in Addis Ababa. While creating his film, Yonie wanted his target audience to not only be adults but also the younger generation. He wants this to be something everyone can relate to and identify with. The movie will premiere in September. For more information about the movie and Yonie Solomon, you can find him on Facebook.
This past week, the 27th annual Ethiopian soccer tournament was held at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, CA. On Friday, July 2nd Yonie performed two poems that he wrote. His first poem was about a recent tragic loss of family that he grew up with. Instead of writing about the sadness that he has gone through, he wrote about dealing with such a tragedy in a positive way. The second poem was a revision of a poem that he wrote in 2004. It talks about the Media’s negative depiction of Ethiopians and Ethiopia.

you will find a rough video of his performance on diretube, please google it typing yonie solomon. His words are clear. Become familiar with Yonie Solomon, because its young, motivated people like him that will help make a change for generations to come.

It is unfortunate, but this how the young people with Ethiopian background are acting , they want to fit in the mainstream America, and they are attracted with the getto attitude, because it sales, hip hoop a billion dollar industry, even the youngster that came from transactional societies like Afghanistan act this way in American. It is unfortunate, our young people prefer to pick the getto attitude instead of the middle class America. But is reality.
