Ethiopia sentenced U.S.-based blogger to life in prison and two others to 14 years in jail

Ethiopia slaps prison terms on three journalists

Ethiopia sentenced two Ethiopian journalists to 14 years in jail and an exiled blogger to life imprisonment on Thursday on charges of conspiring with rebel groups against the government, the second case in a month targeting the media.

In December, two Swedish journalists were sentenced to 11 years in jail for entering the country illegally and aiding a rebel group, prompting anger among rights groups and concern over media freedom in the east African country.

Woubishet Taye and Reyot Alemu were found guilty last week of conspiring to participate in terrorist acts and laundering money from rebel groups and Ethiopian arch-foe Eritrea. The pair had been arrested in July.

"I didn't expect this sentencing, she didn't commit terrorist crimes," said Reyot's lawyer, Mola Zegeye, adding that the two will appeal the sentence.

U.S.-based Elias Kifle, whose pro-opposition website EthiopianReview.com often criticises the government, was tried in absentia and sentenced to life on similar charges.

Typical dictatorship behavior. Arrest, torture, intimidate those who don’t share your views but in the end meet a violent end at the hands of the abused and the cycle continues.

Ethiopia needs a smart selfless intellectual leader more than ever.

Meles it not it jut like Mengistu wasn’t!

I am starting to feel real sorry for those who are scavenging left overs from our rulers; Especially those professionals including judges who are working and defending a bold, blatant and naked lie, even a child can detect. There was a time, they can lie pretty good and rally thousands; That day is long gone, this days there bare, boring lie and fabrication has intimidation tone in it, and it is scary. As my cousin used to say ” this is not cool!”

In today’s Ethiopia , if the leba master saw you in his dream, that is good reason to be labelled as a terrorist. You are going to be accused of trying to blow the renessance dam in the Abay river. To your surprise, they would say you were caught red handed in the spot with missiles….ya ya we know, still it is not constructed , but who cares.. You were thinking about it & exchanged telephone & e mail. Right here some die hard individual will pop up to say ” yes I know him….a dangerous one…he never quits thinking … I saw him think that! “. Finally a judge will read your verdict as ” If not for the cooperation of the peace loving citizens & gallant members of the anti terrorism task force, the bomb you planted would have caused a massacre and disrupted our development .” ” you are guilty, you will be punished by death.”
Once upon a time elders will be involved in your case … You will be set free, after you seek pardon & regret to criticizing their failed policies & they would make you sign a deal not to interfere again with their Growth and transformation plan.
Last but not least before you reach your front porch, a movie will be released by Mega studio ” Akeldama, season 2 ” In the movie, you will find yourself & others conspiring to use attack helicopter to destroy the main market place ” merkato” and they would say ,it is all based on true story.

Just release all political prisoners and journalists now!!

A shameful act by a shameful regime.

When terrorists accuse others for terrorism, especially when the great majority of those who are accused and jailed are citizens who have done nothing more than speaking and writing about the absence of democracy and human rights in Ethiopia, it shows that TPLF is scared of its own shadows and uncertain of its future.

Fortunately, they can not imprison the aspirations and dreams of free and democratic Ethiopians. Simply, it is a desperate act by a desperate regime.

The court system in Ethiopia is a fake one. Its function is just to tell the defendants the decision passed by Melles and members of his inner circle.

Journalists? Journalists’? Give me a break. They know nothing about journalism. Although I have to admit 14 years is a bit harsh, but these are not journalists. Have you seen their news? It is simply ‘an ox has gave birth’ as my countrymen puts it. These are a bunch of idiots who are seeking short cut fame. Nothing less nothing more.

I strictly condemned any kinds of terrorist attack against any civil society, military, and financial institutes. Al-Shaba must be wiped out from the edge of the earth. I also believe that EPRDF also one of the terrorist parties; therefore, every members of it must face international tribe Union for commuting genocide against Oromo, Gambala, and Ogaden people. In fact, commuting Genocide is the culture of all Ethiopian leaders and kings, except Empire Hailesselasie. Whereas Empire Menilik killed hundred thousands of Oromos and people of the Southern Ethiopians. Moreover, his forces raped and cut off breasts of thousands Oromo women and took the land from Oromos and gave them to Amharas and Tigrians. However, Empire Minelik was less barbaric and more cleaver than King Tewdros and Yohannes. In the other hand, King Tewdros was barbaric, totalitarian, and murderer. He massacred hundred thousands of Amharas in Showa , Wello, and Gojam. He also killed many Tigrians. The level of Tewdros’s atrocity can be compared only to that of Al-Shebab, no any other body at the region to be compared. King Tewdros cut the hands of many Amhars in Shewo region while they were alive, and killed more than 30,000 priests of Ethiopian Orthodox church. When we came to King Yohannes, he killed hundred thousands of Muslims for not converting into Christianity and also he forcefully converted Muslims in Wello and Tigray regions (werje Tigray) in to Christianity. King Yohannes was also very backward king so that he used to punish if people found drinking Teje in normal days (unless holidays) because he believed that Teje was only for Royal families. Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam also committed genocide against Tigrians and Eritreans. From 1986 – 1991, more than 50 rounds of fighter jet flight per day were operating combat in Eritrea and Tigray region. As a result, many people were massacred and many more people from Tigray and Eritrea fled to Sudan to save their vital lives from the bombardment of Derge regim . At that time Ethiopian Diasporas who lived in Europe and United States were not seen on the streets of Washington DC to protest against genocide on Tigray and Eritrean people (as Ethiopian Diasporas nowadays protest against EPRDF’s genocide on Gambela’s and Ogaden’s people). This is the fact every Ethiopians must swallow.

fev,
Hey we are not being funny; we are being serious and vigilant of the security of Ethiopia and its people.
God bless Ethiopia.

Gashe Mamo,
if we are to release these treasnous so called journalists, we would not have brought their case to the court and have the judges slapped them with such a long term imprisonment.
You must be joking anyways. Not without reason for you to pick this name, Mamo. It reminds of Mamo kiloo.

The Ethiopian Federal High Court is the laughing stock of justice with no rule of law. Any decision handed down by such a criminal enterprise will never detract Ethiopians from eliminating the neo-colonial regime of oppression, it can only further strengthen and invigorate Ethiopians to defend Our Nation from alien interests.

“Each provision in this Chapter has a precedent, either in Ethiopian traditions, or in well-established constitutional precedents abroad. No less than 29 articles have been inserted in the Constitution to provide for the protection of the essential liberties and rights of the people. Thus, We have provided that “no one shall be denied the equal protection of the laws"; that “there shall be no discrimination amongst Ethiopian subjects with respect to the enjoyment of all civil rights";that “there shall be no interference with the exercise in accordance with the law of the rites of any religion or creed by residents of the Empire";that “freedom of speech and of the press is guaranteed throughout the Empire, in accordance with the law";that “correspondence shall be subject to no censorship except in time of declared national emergency.” We have, further confirmed our practice that every person accused of a crime shall be presumed innocent until proven guilty and that no one shall be imprisoned for debt, except in case of legally proved fraud.” Selected Speeches of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, page 406

“Unlike many countries of the world, We have provided the right to any resident of the Empire to bring suit against the Government or ministry, department, agency or instrumentality thereof, for wrongful acts resulting in substantial damage. Likewise, everyone in the Empire shall have the right to present petitions to Us.
So important have We considered these guarantees of Human Rights and Fundamental Liberties that, in the Revised Constitution, We have stipulated that not only the courts but, in particular, Ourselves, shall at all times assure and protect these Human Rights. They constitute principles which no branch of the Government, be it the Executive, Legislative or Judiciary, can transgress and which, in consequence, must be placed under the particular protection of the Sovereign Himself. We Ourselves will always be ready to act positively to ensure respect for these rights by all branches and every official of the Government. Thus, the lowliest subject of the Empire, the poorest as well as the richest, even the convict in prison, has always the assurance that the Sovereign is at all times vigilant in the protection of his rights and fundamental liberties.” HIM Negus Haile Selassie

“It is not necessary to enumerate countries where the people and entire country having lost unity, spiritual or otherwise, have become playgrounds and laughing stocks of outsiders. The historical events of certain countries bear witness to this fact. In our own times, there are those expansionists who by shedding blood, desire to achieve their ambition and by dismembering themselves they are seen as tools for alien interests. Our people from Ethiopia shed blood, to save them from disintegration. Those personalities who believe in freeing a country by secession are selfish and prey to outsiders. We will not accept their motives.” Selected Speeches of HIM Negus Haile Selassie I, page 426

“The aim of those leaders that is based on ambition for power and personal gain is one with no firm foundation and will, consequently, crumble easily.” Selected Speeches of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, page 471

“Every structure must be built on a solid foundation, for those constructed otherwise would soon collapse. The proclamation by which We made land grants to the entire Ethiopian people is the foundation of this scheme.” Selected Speeches of HIM Haile Selassie I, page 487

“Man can only begin an enterprise it is for God to dispose of it to a good end.” HIM Negus Haile Selassie I

Long Live the Constitutional Monarchy!
Long Live the Kebra Negast!
Long Live the Fetha Negast!
Fire burn down the neo-colonial divide and rule policy of ethnic federalism
Fire burn down the satanic star of secession
Beka! Tinsae Moa Anbessa!
The Lion of Judah shall throw off the yoke and set the captives free!

Those who Fear God, must be Fair to others.

Those who don’t Fear God, are not Fair to others. But, they keep exercising evil.

The Governments who are being elected Democratically by the people to serve the people, have no Fear, to serve all the people equally. But, the Government who have doubt of their election results, they live their life with Fear and causes CHAOS and disturbances to the people, because of lack of confidence.

The Ethiopia Government receives donations Internationally, by signing Internationally recognized Rules.
The Ethiopian Government, like the donations he received, he must also obey International Rules. Which is:
1. The Government must stop Psychological restraints and Psychological detention of the Ethiopian People, just for ethnic based personal and political advantageous.

The Government must recognise the International fundamental Rights and Freedoms: freedoms of Conscience and Religion, freedom of thought, belief, OPINION and EXPERESSION, including FREEDOM OF THE PRESS AND OTHER MEDIA OF COMMUNICATIONS.

Legal Rights of Life, Liberty and Security of the Person.
