Ethiopian Israelis plan to take protest to New York

Organizer is now awaiting final permits from the New York police, and hopes the demonstration will take place early next month.

By Revital Blumenfeld

As Ethiopian activists expressed satisfaction over Wednesday's demonstration in Tel Aviv, a new battle line has emerged for Ethiopian Jews targeting discrimination in Israel: New York.

Educator and activist Benjamin Aklom is targeting the Big Apple after recognizing the influence of overseas Jewish communities on Israel

"We [Ethiopians] in Israel are a very weak political force, and significant changes like we're demanding can only come through two channels," Aklom explained. One is "mobilization of Israeli society as a whole." The other is "recruiting Diaspora Jewry" - much of which has been active for years on behalf of Ethiopian Jews - "to influence the decision makers in Israel."

I support the existence of a peaceful Israel as a nation just as I support the existence of a peaceful Palestinian State. Having said that, it is the height of naivete for people of black color to assume and expect that a white society of any origin would accept them as equal. It is even more naive for Jews of Ethiopian origin to expect that they would be accepted by the entirety of Israeli society. Just look at how the Jews have treated the Arab-Israelis amongst them for the past 70 years. There is a belief amongst the Ethiopian Jews that they are special people from a very special country. When they left Ethiopia, they left, in part, because they believed they were going to the land of milk and honey! Well, very quickly on their arrival, they began to see that Israel is a country of white people who don't see blacks as their equal--just like all other societies on the planet that are white. It does not matter which country or how educated. If you are black, you may be accepted as a person but not as an equal. That is the crucible of race!! So, therefore, while Ethiopian Jews in Israel may eventually win some political and economic gains as a result of their efforts, their acceptance by Israeli society as an equal will never happen. Just witness the experience of black people in the United States, Brazil, England, China, Russia, Germany--need I give more examples? I rest my case!!

Wetu, enewta has said it all, so I also rest my case..but in case; that cursed area where our people have been forced (by unfortunate circumstances, not counting most of these intolerable retrograde weirdos who spout hate and evil on this site!!) to move has been, since time immemorial, an eternal source of the most unimaginable conflicts and destructions that still haunts us, and will certainly do so till the end of time. Like my friend said one should hopelessly be naive to expect, or even to think of being taken as an equal, let alone as one's own, a kindred etc..this is everywhere, even in our own old Abyssinia.
So what has one to do, but wage an endless combat against all forms of evil imbedded in the human genome!! The struggle of our people in Israel deserves a moral support from every Hebesha, to say the least. Talking of support made me think of our Warrior Queen C'est Moi, whose uncharacteristic neutrality and unnerving silence on this issue is beginning to bother me..What is the matter with you Warrior Queen? Have you swallowed your tongue or are you saving it for... If I don't read any 'message' from you on this issue, I will come in person to snatch you back to Meskal Square, and no force on earth shall save you, not your army or even her royal highness the Amhara Princess.
Signing off for now!!
As always, Sjaloom.

As far as we Etiopians/Africans are concered these sell outs are not Etiopian.By their own admission the so called state of Israel is what they consider home,so whatever happens to them is not our problem.Infact, we should make sure they never come back to our beloved mother land.I consider a thugged out African American a brother, before these uncle Toms.

These Ethiopians better sit their butt before they get worse treatment. Israel is going through war with Iran and now these people are making it difficult. They should protest later after the Iran issue is solved not now. In fact the more they protest the more their right is taken. Although I agree they should stand for their right, they shouldn't go over board and make thing difficult for Israel.

wetu,

I don't understand with Ethiopian Jews, it is not like they went there in chains as slaves. Why did Israel took them from Ethiopia, is it to treat them different than any other Israeli society so that just like blacks in U.S so that Israel can say oh we have blacks too? I think Israel needs to work on this. Why would they want a class system in Israel and why they need to bring Ethiopians Jews from their native land if they didn't want them to be part of homogeneous society? Ethio Jews still have choice to go back but they want because the benefit is much better in Israel than today's Ethiopia. Besides, the cruel TPLF may not want them and they don't want another Gondere society that TPLF is trying to destroy.

Ayee; Whatever; Favioli

Thank you for your comments regarding my initial posting. Let me respond to 'Ayee's' question indirectly. Yes, you are correct. The Bete Israel did not go to Israel in chains--they chose to go there. With pressure from American Jews, and an Israeli government flexible enough to accommodate the long yearning for the "Felasha" to go back to their claimed land of the ancestors, there ensued an effort to take back as many of them as possible. There was an airlift through Sudan in the early eighties, and another one on the eve of TPLF/EPRDF coming to power in Addis in 1991. My guess is that the urgency to airlift the first group was made more compelling because of the severe famine at the time; and I understand that there were financial considerations (that never materialized) with the Mengistu regime regarding the second airlift. The Bete Israel choose Israel as their home, and I do not begrudge them. Personally, I wish they stayed in Ethiopia. But they chose to leave. Now they have to deal with the circumstances that prevail in a 21st century society as opposed to a society still in the stone age! Without complicating things further, I will add that while their ethnicity is their choice and could change over time, their race will always be the same--it can not change!!!

@ All Beta Israel,

We will support your cause all the way, I believe you have taken your protest to the right place. USA is where some of those racist, hypocritical, blood sucking Jews control the world from. Despite being less than 3% of the US population, Jews control, monopolize every aspects of the American society. So, hopefully those in the USA might have some level of conciousness, listen to your plights. Just remind them why they despise Hitler & associates, why they keep bringing down anybody who were even slightly associated with Hitler no matter how old they are.

Remember, racism is everywhere, including Ethiopia, you just have to stand up against it and make your voices heard because YOU CAN. Unlike Ethiopians in Ethiopia, you can be, will be heard, you won't be labelled as terrorists, you won't be tortured, abused, shoved to jail or killed because you went out to protest.

Just count yourselves lucky that you are NOT living in current Ethiopia. Beta Israel have come so far, achieved so much despite all the obstacles, time frame. We are proud of you. Keep pushing, keep fighting for your God given rights, keep sending your kids to school, never take your eyes off the ball.

... Finally, don't listen to some hypocrites accusing you of betraying Ethiopia as if they are any different. Almost all of those who are accusing you of betrayal are residing outside of Ethiopia, highly likely western passport holders. Talk about double standard :):)

Well done again, keep fighting folks!

The time is not right to protest. It will get worst. Right now, the Jewish opponents are supporting Iran to attack, so it is better to take the case into court, rather than being seen on the streets.

The East-Indian and Phillipinos are being treated very-well by the Jewish in North-America and Middle-East, without being Jewish. So, what is the point Ethiopians being Jewish and still not being accepted as a Human?

Dear Nazret,
Why do you call these people Ethiopian Israeli. I understand from this terminology that these people are Ethiopia who choose to register as Israeli citizen. But that is not true. They are not Ethiopian rather they are Israeli who Ethiopia hosted them for centuries. I think the use of "Ethiopian Israeli" terminology is wrong. You could call them the black Israeli or cocroach (as the white Israelis calls them) ,,, I don't care but they don't deserve the name "Ethiopian Israeli". They are not and basically they are cause of an insult for Ethiopian people. I wish you prepare some writing to oppose the use of this terminology.
