Ethiopia's Biggest Cement Factory Inaugurated

Ethiopia's Biggest Cement Factory Inaugurated

Source: ENA

Derba MIDROC Cement Plc, Ethiopia’s biggest cement factory, was inaugurated here on Sunday in the presence of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and other invited guests at a ground-breaking ceremony held with in the premises of the factory.

The 351 million dollar plant was built by the MIDROC Ethiopia group owned by Mohammed al-Amoudi, an Ethiopian-born Saudi Arabian billionaire who is one of the biggest investors in the Horn of Africa.

Derba MIDROC located about 70 kilometers northwest of the capital, Addis Ababa, near Chanch town of Oromia State will produce 8,000 metric tons of cement daily.

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi on the occasion said the plant will contribute a lot to the ongoing development in the industry sector.

It will also help the country to meet the increasing demand of cement in the construction sector, Meles said.

The plant will raise the country's annual cement production to over 9 million tons.

Mohammed al-Amoudi on his part said MIDROC will continue to contribute share to the efforts of the government towards development.

In this regard, MIDROC has set plan to built gypsum and marble factories in the coming 10 years at a cost of 100 billion Birr.

Ethiopia, a net importer of cement, plans to boost output by ten-fold by mid-2015 to 27 million tons, according to the government.

The Derba plant will add 2.5 million tons of cement per year, while expansions to Mesobo Building Materials Production Plc and state-owned Mugher Cement Enterprise will add another 1 million, it said.

Ethiopia “will be self-sufficient for the coming two to three years” in cement.

Derba Cement, built by China National Building Material Co., may earn more than 2 billion birr (115.9 million dollars) annually, Project Manager Tadesse Kebede said in an interview at the site. “If everything goes well it will be a cash cow,” he said.

Al-Amoudi’s company invested 100 million dollars in the operation, with the European Investment Bank, the African Development Bank, the International Finance Corp. and the Development Bank of Ethiopia providing the rest of the funds.

The project was delayed for “almost one year” because obtaining the loans took longer than expected, Tadesse said. “To work with multilateral banks is very difficult,” he said.

Tasew let's not put ourself's down we are a great nation. why don't we leave the English to the English speakers? English is not our languge we speak it to communicate with rest of the world. cash caw means A business or product which generates a steady, dependable flow of cash. Ground breaking ceremony also Grand ceremony or it could mean something that have been built by formally begin a construction project. I am sure you know what Ceremony means.

Very irritating news especially for us coming from Wollo. Because Woyanne is distructing the existing Tendeho cotton plantation which had been established by English Investors four decades ago. And it was one of the best supplier of raw matterial for our textile factories in Ethiopia mainly for Kombolcha textile plant which was erected by design by the previous concerned government but now that factory and the cotton plantation will be gone.

Even the worest deal was done between Indian underequiped companies using rudimentary 18th centurty technologies while every updated technologies from well known countries like china and Esraile is heading to Tigray.

Even Kombolcha air port construction is carried by Tigrian unexperienced but money minded contractors controlling all the construction projects through out the country leaving Tigray for the foreign engineers for quqlity purpose so the money goes from the right pocket to the left. Tigray dominated government allocates develoment budget for regions and he will offer the bid for Tigrian contractors how funny is that. Their construction undergone for repair before starting a service to the poor Ethiopians.

Wow!! great news on the cement front!!!
Also I liked the Maritime training at Bahir Dar. Besides giving immediate employment to many young Ethiopians, many of them will be all over the world's merchant ships getting a glimpse of how countries of the world fare in trade and all. That in turn will be an asset when these young people get into other fields in Ethiopia or they retire and become consultants back home, hoping the political situation is getting better and create a fertile condition to participate in building the country even better.

All in all, I see Ethiopia's night is almost over and it is almost dawn in my beloved Ethiopia!!!

May God bless Ethiopia!

I, too, was surprised to see the words "ground breaking" in a story that talks about a plant that had already been built and is in production. The whole thing reminded me that Ethiopia does not really have journalists. What we have is a bunch of individuals good enough to hold a microphone or parrot what the government functionaries spit out to them. In that sense, you have garbage in, and as a consequence, you have garbage out. All the worthwhile journalists are either in jail or have been chased out of the country. Another sad episode in the continuing saga of a country that deliberately facilitates a 'brain drain'! Need I say more?

Mr. Mohammed al-Amoudi is one of the true sons of Ethiopia.
He is one among the millions with all courage and determination who came to the rescue of our mother land.

He took the initiative and invested in millions when no one has the balls to do a serious business in Ethiopia.

You just need a couple of such persons, not millions of whiners like the Al Maria.

I wish we can clone him. Because he is like that courageous sperm sell among millions of its siblings that hit the egg and bears fruit.

With Meles’ leadership they can take Ethiopia a step forward to its coming soon glory.

They are quite a team, a visionary and an implementer. I’m happy for my country. I feel sad for people who couldn’t enjoy this moment. But it’s their problem. How could one fail to have an iota of humbleness to admire and genuinely give credit where it’s due. I feel lucky to witness all these development endeavors. Sorry whining diaspora.

Pr. Al mariam
just few years ago ethiopia was producing less than a million tone,
today ethiopia produces 9million tons of cement which is still not enough because of the construction boom across the country, and constructions which include urban/rural roads, dams, houses and high rise buildings are a sign of progress. its one thing to oppose and criticize a government but completely different to lie to yourselves, after all there is nothing wrong with ethiopia developing no matter who is in power!

Cash caw is a metaphor to express something which is dependable as a source of money or income e.g. Isaias is a cash caw for terrorists.

Did I hear Dictator Melese Naziew saying, " Ye Ethiopia Hezb Ke-mengist Gara Endemeselfe Ergtenna nighn"? The dictator is admitting that he is the one who had a good idea which direction the country should go not the citizens. Unless he assumed that the people he supposed to serve don’t like to see a good things happening to them, which is absurd. Maybe he is ceasing the moments for bullshiting in which he is expert. Talking is not one of his weak side keeping his promise is. He runs his mouth like a chatterbox, motor mouth.

In a democratic elected country the representatives MPS officials works for the people serving their constituency fellow citizens when they failed to do their jobs keeping promises they'll be voted out of office. That is the fundamental problem with the chief dictator and his yes sir man all unelected by the people cause they are there to serve themselves.

The citizens of the country need to be respected not unelected officials who are misgoverning the country. All dictators have the same believes THAT IS I know what is better for you. His kind of Knowledge is killing our country. Displacing the landowners giving away fertile virgin lands for foreigners, landlocked the country, looted the country dry, KILLING innocent students, stealing votes, etc.….

Don't get me wrong I would like to see more of this type of happening in my country a lot in my opinion its long over due. I would like to see our citizens governed by elected and respectful leaders who mobilized our citizens to tackle our eternal enemy that is poverty. Building more hospitals, schools, clean water, food sufficiency adapting modernize way of farming we can do it ourselves to hell with Indian and others who are slaving our people and we need to go for modern industrial production like japan and Germans are a good example to look at in the future our people will be competitive in this fast passing world. Finally totally eliminating foreign influence such as NGO’s serves their interest in the expense of our poor suffering people. Empower our citizens. I would start by shrinking the size of foreign embassy and scrutinize their business dealing in our soil. Maybe I am envious to see my country pulling herself out of her misery in my life time. Our country is not poor but poorly managed. That’s what I think.

Ethiopia will soon be a net exporter of cement, there are 34 additional cement projects which are on the pipeline.

Derba-Midroc has stabilised the cement market, the cost of construction has been rising up for decades, the new cement industry will help reduce the cost of construction. It will be playing a significant role in the fight against poverty. Abundant and cheap cement means more buildings and dams.

Wow, am happy for Derba Midroc and those who benefit from a cheap price of cement.

I would like to congratulate Dr Alamudi for the successfull completion of the Project.

Those of you who keep on crying whenever you see successfull individuals can keep on crying, Alamudi is a visionary and hard working individual. Masha Allah he is Allah's gift to Ethiopia. He single handedly has created job opportunities for over 50,000 ethiopians. I just don understand why some individuals keep on spitting abusive words in this forum. Ethiopia needs men and women who can work and transform our nation.

Welldone Derba-Midroc

It is interesting to read all the opinions pros and cons.. unfortunately our opinions doesn't matter. One positive thing that came out from the news is few Ethiopians will gain employment opportunity. Also it is a bad news for the so called Professor Al. As we all know Al and his gangs don't want to here any thing good about Ethiopia. The self claim professor would like to see destruction instead of construction. I personally believe Ethiopia is heading into the right direction. The future seems bright for young Ethiopians.

Weche gud....kikikiki

Unless you are sick in your mind, or rather you are the "Enemy"; this investment is
top of any news I have heard this year-2012.
An Ethiopian born business man investing
in Ethiopia at such amount is
the first of its kind. I am proud of it,
and if you are Ethiopian, you should as well.
Well, I see the bloggers here are against
this and the reason is just one thing.
What do you expect from shaabiya, Eritrean crooks, and the amiche deportees?
All these are here on this website, crying
foul all the time. I hope, by now, all of us
now who can be who. By any reasoning, this
is a great news unless you are one of them.

kikikikiki
I am proud more than anytime in my life that
Ethiopia is moving forward....

My advise to my Ethiopian compatriots is for you to at least suspect that anyone who pretends to be a really concerned Ethiopian with alternative views (rather destructive) in most of the times is no one but an Eritrean/Amiche/ with core motive of achieveing destruction/disintegration/division of your own country. Something shaabiya had been created and naurished by Arab crook leaders to achieve over time. kikikiki African singapore is on downward spiral, though, as it got itself bankrupt trying to achieve a non realistic goal..kikikiki
