Ethiopia: Ermyas, Tekle Face Central Bank’s Wrath over Zemen Bank
Source: Addis Fortune
Regulators at the central bank have struck a blow to former main promoters of Zemen Bank, following an investigation by a state audit corporation that alleged inappropriate transactions during the formative years of the Bank.
National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has handed out its highly anticipated pronouncement on the two individuals who were hauled up. Ermyas T. Amelga, former board chairman and main promoter of Zemen Bank, is now banned from serving as a director in the banking industry, while Tekle Alemineh, who was a director at Zemen, is fired from his job the bank.
A letter signed by Getahun Nana, vice governor of the central bank, and issued on January 27, 2012, also ruled that Zemen Bank should suspend any outstaying loans to Access Capital Services S.C. and any of its subsidiaries, while the Bank is told not to extend loans and advances to these companies in the future.
“This is done only to separate the association of Zemen and Ermyas, after the findings of the investigations,” a senior official at NBE told Fortune. “It is not meant to discourage his investments.”
