Ethiopia's women: Maid in Ethiopia
IN LATE February 2012, Alem Dechasa, an Ethiopian maid working in Lebanon, was video-taped being beaten and dragged into a car. On March 14th, she committed suicide. Her story has drawn attention once again to the plight of migrant workers in the Middle East. But Ms Alem’s fate has also highlighted a more unpleasant side of Ethiopia’s impressive growth story.
Ethiopia’s economy is based on small-scale agriculture. More than 85% of the country’s 80m people live in the countryside. Most have limited or no access to such basics as clean drinking water, health-care facilities and education. Helen Gebresillassie, a lawyer who teaches at Stony Brook University’s School of Social Welfare in New York and a former legal advisor to the Forum on Street Children in Ethiopia, an NGO, says that high inflation and market inefficiencies keep most farming household incomes so low that everyone must work, including children. When children are sent to school, parents worry about their daughters’ safety getting there. More often boys get to study while girls are expected to do housework or get married.
With little education, young women in rural Ethiopia struggle to compete in the labour market. The only realistic employment opportunity for most of them is more of the same domestic work they have done their whole lives.
Ms Alem’s case is not uncommon, explains Ms Gebresillassie. Traffickers specifically target uneducated and poor young women from rural areas in order to lure them to big cities in Ethiopia and the Middle East, she continues. That combined with the cultural expectation that children must help support their entire family means that young women are easy prey for traffickers’ with their empty promises of higher income and a better life.
The Economist Intelligence Unit, our sister organisation, forecasts real GDP growth of 8% for Ethiopia in the fiscal year 2011/2012, mostly due to hikes in agricultural prices. That eclipses the OECD’s predictions of less than 2% GDP growth for the same period. That bodes well for the country’s future, but Ethiopia’s government will need to ensure that growth rates are sustainable by cultivating one of the country’s most valuable resources—its women.
The daughters of Oromo, Amhara and other Ethiopians are exported to Arab countries while The Tigrian girls given the best job in the country.
RIP Aleem Dechaassaa
????????????? what are u talking about, have u guys even read what u have written?!?! what does Alem Dechasa has got to do with the 8% Gdp growth forcast, or the sustainability of growth in Ethiopia, is this called “creating a post/ news”
that was lowww
Rest in Peace Alem, may God bless your soul, Amen!
Let her rest, she already had enough.
. . . . .we shared to built up our country economy. . . . .
. . . . .we increased our dollar reserved and revenue. . . . .
but, is there any improvement or government effort for welfare and protection of every “Maid in Ethiopia"?
is there any assurance of protection for Ethiopian overseas workers while working abroad?
how many more Alem needs to sacrifice innocent lives to eradicate abuses by abusive employers and scalawag authorities abroad? or even reduce these maltreatments?
how they can depend their lives in foreign laws that even their languages, letters, evil laws, custom and traditions are not fully understand by our overseas workers before they depart from AA?
how they can stand to depend their own in foreign court that even these lazy and stupid lawyers appointed and sent by our authorities are amatures from kender schools?
how they can depend their rights if they dont have authenticated and safe guaranteed working contract/agreements signed by both authorities?
is there any department or sector from our embassies to monitor and check their condition or even scrutiny of abusive employers to ban them to recruit or hire another Ethiopian?
do we promote and develop our overseas worker program to protect the rights every Ethiopian working abroad?
do we regulate the recruitment and secure best term of their employment contract to protect as a worker and human being?
do we conduct pre-employment and pre-departure orientation to every Ethiopian bound to overseas? or even repatration program of distressed Ethiopians abroad? or even legal assistance for the victims of abused and maltreated workers abroad?
i need answers. . . . .but from who? . . . .is there any ears or eyes from our authorities and responsible government agencies?. . . . .or even from this USELESS AND STUPID GOVERNMENT?
This paints clear picture of the phantom economic growth. Zenawi & Co would NOT have a clue about Macro/Micro economics even if it slaps them right across the face. I am pretty sure Zenwi said economic downturn in the western world would NOT affect Ethiopia/Africa lacking a great deal in BASICS of macro economics department. As for the precious women of Ethiopia, they are just another export commodities for the looting leeches in Arat Kilo, that is precisely what Ethiopians have been saying, long before this report.
… As remittance became a little earner for Zenawi & Co, 1st, in the name of transaction fees & 2nd it feeds, takes care of families, that would otherwise have had nothing to eat, no money to send their children to school or pay for health care and all sorts. All these in fact eases pressure from the government hence the incorporation of exporting women to middle east as contemporary slaves in TPLF’s Economic/Business MODEL.
“Ethiopia; a sad ending to once noble country & People".
a somali woman would never ever work for a hairy arab but habesha woman are obsessed with money, they will rather put their lives in danger for the sake of money.
even in puntland northern somalia we have so many ethiopians refugees waiting for boats day/night just to be smuggled into poor yemen.
habesha men should learn how to control their woman.
One woyane officer has three to four Oromo and Amhara maids and guards inside his fat villas, they are all paid some coins, damn!
It is absolutely true! Modern slavery is supported by The Tigrean PM. Check the flight to The Arab States from Addis!! Not a single tigray women on the line!!!Shame on the non Tirean men. Check the ad on every block!! agency for sending maids. Will post one of the elite agency form Bole–
I agree with you 100%, there is a problem of culture, Ethiopian women is just cheap and no Ethiopian seems to admit it, denial.
Just jump to any Soical network and you will find Ethiopian women waiting for any man they don’t know to follow him anywhere lol
Cheap women and cheap culture but, rich in bragging and denial!
A culture that failed to denounce prostitution.
the case of ethiopia was lost the day the evil midget took control of our country.many ethiopians i talked to in ethiopia tell me they feel like they are under colonial rule.the root of all problems in ethiopia is the ugly midget and shabia gang in arat kilo.i mean all previous leaders of ethiopia have their own shortcomings in many respects.however the weyane/shabia looters are one of a kind in their deep seated hatred for ethiopia.death to those who gave away ethiopia’s only sea outlet to arab banda shabia.death to those who say ethiopia doesn’t exist,it is something to be created in the future.death to hate mongers.midget/shabia rule=dismemberment of mother ethiopia.period.god save mother ethiopia.
If they keep ‘exporting’ women to arab countries in thousands, there will be more single men running around chasing few women. What a headache meeeen!!!!!. I am advising you men to take good care of your wife and make her a true partner. Do not work her to death other wise there will be a strong probability of your wife heading to Jeda. Men let us show the ladies that it is really worth staying with husband in Ethiopia than going to the desert and deal with that wifffffy.
1. Why does the Ethiopian woman always has to be the bread winner for her family of ‘Lazy Bum Males’?
Doing things ‘Yemiasafer’ While her brothers wait back home for money from her…drinkin coffee and dress clean in Addis?
Guys! Don’t be ashamed of working, throw away your Hafret and work. Keep your sisters at home!
2. The Government leasing land to foreigners is to DEPOPULATE the region for political purposes. overnment should not be in business of leasing land and moving Ethiopians. Ethiopians tha would like to lease land should do it individually themselves and rip the benefits themselves.
As for the Tigreans I remember when they used to shout ‘Korkorro yaleh’ in Addis streets. I respect that they have improved themselves but not by displacing government workers, displacing businessmen, robbing contracts, dividing Ethiopia along ethnic lines and so on.
It doesn’t matter what ethnic line is the ruler, but be fair or get out!!!!!
One way track minded Meles equates economy growth with the expansion of his dumb head, belly and pockets.
The rest is a mystery to him. It is a miracle that the whole Ethiopian population is not dying of starvation. It is by the grace of God and hard work of Ethiopians that they manage to survive for 21 years of looting while Meles is engaged in uprooting people out of their towns, homes, selling fertile land to foreigners.
He is incapable of knowing or has any clue to know what economical growth means in a country like Ethiopia. He is busy begging and stealing money and stashing it out of Ethiopia for his after life.
I blame Meles for not providing protection for this kids… how sad it is to see these kids suffer no matter what country you are from. 3000+ years freedom to be treated like animal… wow
first of all i am not disrespecting ethiopian women kk, i love them they are lyk my sisters but it’s nothing to do with being poor, i live in england but most of my family live in poor condition in dire dawa. ethiopian is not a poor country, its a beautiful & developing country but millions of ethiopian sisters mostly the amhara women are moving abroad for domestic work, they know that their Arab host will treat them lyk slave, rape them or even killed them but they still take the journey cuz they are all obsessed with money even most prostitutes in Dubai who are selling sex are mostly from the amhara tribe, i dnt kno maybe it’s a cultural thing for amhara woman to act cheep & sell their bodies for quick money. i personally think the amhara ethnic group are the weakest link in ethiopian they have completely lost their identity & culture, they ave been deeply influenced by foreign culture.
even in england amhara woman act lyk their whites most of them were extremely short skirts.
i dnt kno if nazret.com posted news about a 3 year or four years about a young ethiopian sister who was dating a jamaican guy, she dumped him but he came to her house one night killed her then dismembered her body then he put her in a suitcase & throw her into a canal(river). all i can say is god bless ethiopian women & my ethiopian bros plz work & support ur woman.
Ethiopian women outshine some of you LAZY, spineless idiots who are too busy gossiping at your local Tej Bet & Cafes and grazing on narcotic kaht, sitting on you lazy a$$ 24/7. Some pigs like you calling yourselves men actually wait for handouts from Ethiopian women slaving away in Arabia. Some so called Ethiopian males make a living from money out of contemporary slavery of our precious women.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out Majority of Ethiopian women are the most decent, humble, hard working precious souls & when given the opportunity they outsmart, fly over your lazy a$$ in NO time! While some of you chauvinistic pigs beat up your wives/spouses on a daily basis, as if they are your traditional drum, the worthless 99.99% scum of the earth MALE dominated Ethiopian kangaroo Cabinet approves to EXPORT women. Not only Ethiopian women are the backbone of society, they carry so much burden of male chauvinistic pigs, paedophiles who abuse them to a greater horrific extent.
If I were you, I would zip my mouth. What a jackass! Who are you even to generalize Ethiopian women and judge Every women by your own, cheap, prostitute female family members standard? After all, most people seem to judge others by their own standard. The Ethiopian mothers, grandmothers, aunts, great aunts, relatives, neighbours, sieters, friends that I know are pure diamonds! No exaggeration. Just talk about the hookers you know, stop generalizing moron.
… Then again, most Tigrays especially those who were born & raised in Tigray & Eritrea have very little respect for their women hence using them as punch bag. There is a saying in Amharic:
Alnegerkushim Wey BeAtir Tenteltiye
Tigray Wushima Enji Bal Ayhonim Biye
Apparently the above poem was for a non Tigray women suffering daily after marrying a Tsila. I guess those Tsilas in Addis and those who were born & raised outside of Tigray regions are somewhat better due to reform.
IT is actually some Ethiopian men who are actively engaged in pimping out, exporting Ethiopian women for money. How can they keep the women in check when they are the once responsible for fooling these innocent girls, luring them out from rural villages, promising them better, glossy life etc and they end up pimping, enslaving them? Ethiopia had no such maid agency in any time of the country’s history except this worthless pig weyanes. I bet there is NO contemporary Slave/Maid Agency in Somalia to export women. In Ethiopia, there are many and their head quarter is in Arat Killo Palace, where the Prime Minster’s wife is chief secretariat of contemporary slavery.
