Ethiopia: Activists Protest G8 Summit

Activists Protest G8 Summit

By Nico Colombant

VOA News

THURMONT, Maryland
- As U.S. President Barack Obama finished meetings with leaders from the Group of Eight leading industrialized nations and African heads of state at the Camp David retreat in Maryland, demonstrations erupted in nearby towns. The protesters involved regulars of the Occupy movement as well as anti-government Ethiopian activists.

Several hundred Ethiopian activists came from across the United States to protest meetings involving Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, who has been in power since 1991. The United States is a major aid contributor to Ethiopia, whose leader has been accused of restricting freedoms, including those of the media.

Discussions with African leaders have focused on boosting outside agricultural investment, but one protester, Mohamed Abdo, warned against pouring any outside money into Ethiopia.

"They use this money to buy and to supress the people, not for the benefit of the people, so first of all we need to have a free election," he said. "It should be supported by the people so that whatever kind of policy, it should be the people's policy, it should not be a one person policy, that is our message."

Another protester, Tsegaye, said Americans should be concerned their tax dollars are being misspent on projects involving undemocratic countries, regardless of whether they are considered security allies.

"If you don't have a transparent government, if you dont have rule of law, you do not know how those contracts are executed. Are they in the best interest of the Ethiopian people? In the long run, we do not know," Tsegaye said.

Another protest, called the Counter Group of Eight Community Block Party, was held in nearby Frederick, Maryland.

Replicas of drones were on display to criticize current U.S. military actions.

Brian Henry, a regular of so-called Occupy protests in the United States against wealth disparity, said he had little respect for the talks at Camp David.

"I do not know if I care to speculate," noted Henry, "but my opinion is that they talk about how to make the rich of their countries richer."

Police were on the lookout at both events, to make sure there was no violence or public disturbance. Several protesters said they had tried to enter Camp David, but were turned away.

@Agazit Woman,
That is right 99.9% of the country voted for your midget chimp from Adwa. They don't need to protest.
If these protestors are not ERITREANS they must be Martians who speak the local language.

The best slogan these days:

"San-felig-achew haya Ametachew"

Woyane rules Ethiopia all these 20 years by the barrel of the gun!

But such tactics are destined to backfire.

You can't supress humans all the time, because humans find a way to free themselves, even if this effort at times looks a bit slow!

Woyane should seriously consider genuine power sharing with Ethiopians in a democratic environment!

We have no respect for Meles and whatever his efforts to be popular, Ethiopans find Meles as the guy who committed treason against Ethiopia: he made us land-locked, he stole the genuine 2005 election, and in 2010 he claimed he won 99.6% of the vote!

All three major crimes committed by Meles and Woyane!

All these are insults to the intelligence of the Ethiopian people!

Woyane shall never win the hearts and minds of Ethiopians!

Woyanes, better live with these realiztion!

@AZAZIT WOMAN

Who is more Shabia than Meles?
I would also like to remind you that Meles actually destroyed Ethiopia by collaborating with Shabia. Until twelve or so years ago both woyane and shabia were collaborating in looting Ethiopia. I was only in my teens but I still remember it vividly when my prime minister was telling me that an Eritrean who lives in Ethiopia can have a right as an Ethiopian even if he/she voted for Eritrean independence. He was protecting them in all aspects. For all intents and purposes, Eritreans who were living in Ethiopia were treated as first class citizens. True Ethiopians who said that Eritreans should be treated as any other foreigner were brutally tortured, imprisoned and killed. Now many woyane cronies like you are trying to tell us that Shabia is our enemy as if we don’t know. But we true Ethiopians knew that even before you and your bosses realize it. Shabia is our enemy then, it is our enemy now and it will be our enemy in the future. The same is true of TPLF.

@ Kul,

call yourself Azazit or Agazit!
and try to twist your stories left and right you will always remain the same looser.

You have no any stone unturned to blakmail and weaken Eritrea. You have done all evil between the sky and earth but unlike your wishes Eritrea is shinning for all to see.

We fought as one people with undisturbed mind, for what is OURS!For our 21st JOYOUS INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS!!! and NEVER and EVER been looking for an inch that doesn't belong to us unlike sneaky and evil woyane who fight left and right to snatch inches here and inches there and sell millions sq.m of others to weaken the poor.

Eritrean is wellknown for his/her HONESTY, BRAVERY, GENEROSITY and ORIGINALITY.

Thanks to all peaceloving Ethiopians congratulating us ERITREANS for our hard struggle and independence celebrations.

There will be time that this hardship and enemity of our zone is burried deeply forever and we will all enjoy peaceful coexistence, tolerance, acceptance and create harmony, understand, growth hand-in-hand all people in the Horn of Africa.

Thanks again to all our neighbors and world leaders who are sending their greetings and share our joy on this wonderful occassion.

GOD BLESS E R I T R E A !!!

China is the fastest growing economy in the world currently and it obviously is not a democratic state, however it has managed to device and implement an effective economic model. In a highly divided country, such as Ethiopia, achieving consensus on everything is next to impossible. So far we have agreed on two main and fundamental issues: successfully formed a federal system of governance and implemented a developmental state of economy. The existence of dissatisfied minority groups mainly with extreme ideology and agenda, such as the separatists OLF, ONLF, advocates of Unitary System, such as Mr. Alemayehu and co. is unavoidable fact. In my view, existence of dissatisfied minority elements in a democratic society is a common phenomena and should not make Ethiopia a nondemocratic country. Keeping these groups at bay is in the best interest and desire of the majority. It is a fundamental necessity to the Ethiopian union, to our survival, peace, stability, continuity and undisturbed growth. Since we could not satisfy the political views and demands of all groups, we have no choice but to focus on things that affect all of us together such development.

This Teddy character needs his head to be exam. The only thing writes or post cursing someone or trying to degrade people not to have honest conversation. Hey Teddy can you explain your fellow comrade Abebe the difference between a reporter and an activist. Shouting is long gone to Zimbabwe with your leader Menigstu. I noticed some of you compare Abebe with the dog, to me its insult to my lovely dog. Please stop refer him as dog, my dog is a loving animal and very loyal.

the report says there were several hundred ehtiopians protesting, but if you subtract the eritreans and the somales, the number of ethiopians is very small maybe 50. remember hundreds of thousands ethiopians live just few miles way and there was a time where thousands ethiopians used to march. so what does that tell you. one thing for sure which is people may not like meles but they equaly hate the opposition.
teddy why dont you try to write in amharic, because no one understands what you are saying.
