On the march
Footwear may be Ethiopia’s commercial future

From The Print Edition of The Economist

GOING barefoot in Africa often means injuries, worms puncturing the skin and putrefaction of the foot from disease. But in the past few years shoes have been getting a foothold in even the poorest and most remote communities of Ethiopia. Many children living high in the wild Adwa mountains in northern Ethiopia now have shoes. With no cushion or support, they are little more than plastic slippers. But in cold rain they provide a surer footing and protect the soles of the feet from being sliced on sharp rocks and toes from being cracked in a fall.

Those who live higher up in the mountains have to climb rock faces every day to reach schools and clinics far below in the valley. Doctors in the distant town of Hawzen say climbing accidents are the biggest cause of death among mountain children. So even the plastic slippers can save lives. They cost about $2 a pair—which most families say they can afford.

In Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, a shoe revolution is under way. The prime minister, Meles Zenawi, wants Ethiopia to produce shoes for the world. A cheap workforce is drawing Chinese and Turkish investors. One attraction is leather. Ethiopia has one of the largest livestock industries in Africa. Investors say they wish the tanneries were better. Ethiopia, with its present population of 82m people possibly doubling before 2040, may also become an attractive market.

Free pair of shoes for Tigrai children?
I can’t believe my eyes when I read that, in today’s Hawzien,"Doctors in the distant town of Hawzen say climbing accidents are the biggest cause of death among mountain children.”
What does this mean?
Are there no more childhood mortality causes that are familiar to the rest of the Ethiopians kids anymore?
Or is this just an excuse to provide Hawzien children free pair of shoes by the Government ?

Ethiopia is marching on the road to development, Hujuan group, one of the biggest shoes factory in the world has opened a a factory in Ethiopia. They said they will be opening employment opportunities for 100,000 people. Its going to be one of the biggest factories in Africa. This factory has already started exporting shoes to US and European markets. For your surprise its labelled as made in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia’s development is multifaceted, its in agriculture, manufacturing, services, infrastructure etc. Every day the country is changing. I have been to Ethiopia a couple of times and I have seen lots of changes. Some will keep on barking whenever they see changes in the country, they try to belittle each and every development which Ethiopia witnessed after the fall of the Dergue. Most of the individuals who barki like wild dogs are either sympathizers of the dergue or ethnofascists who want to impose a one language and one religion political system in Ethiopia. The others are just slaves of PFDJ/Eritrea who see an economically strong Ethiopia as a threat to Eritrea’s ability to shout and bark in the region. A strong economy will help Ethiopia create an army capable of its enemies in a short period of time.

What else can I say, those of you who want to go to Ethiopia and visit should go, am sure your attitude towards the regime will be positively changed. Many of you will be loving the way the country is being run, we have got such a clever and visionary leaders back at home. There might be some problems here and there but its insignificant to the positive things you gone witness.

The changes we witness now is built on the graveyard of the dergue, so some hard core dergists will not accept the current change, so they will continue to spread their venom here and there. The good thing is this… The EPRDF has got antidote for that. The country is in safe hand and no barking will neither halt not divert us from marching forward

TO ALL SUPPORTERS OF WOYANE

It is really amazing how the supporters of the Woyane/EPRDF are so blind and never seen how the history back in H.M. Haileselesse and Comrade Mengistu was. During these periods, the supporters of both regimes were preaching how good their government was (They arrested and killed who opposed). If we only talk about the good things they (H.M. and Comrade) have done for Ethiopia as well as Africa. One can argue, why be against these governments? But history showed us how the supporters of both governments were so oblivious about the crimes against humanity, killings, anti-freedom of speech, discrimination, nepotism, favoritism … that created rebels in the entire Ethiopia regardless of the good things which was done by both governments. Woyane/EPRDF supporters, history is going to repeat itself on you guys….Can you imagine if woyane/EPRDF were fooled by the economic development of DERG, we would have been still killed by DERG….We all WANT a government who: - is under the Law, respects and practices human rights, advances in economic development, allows freedom of speech, many aspect that make a government a good/fair government.

WE DO NOT WANT A government that performs part of it!

Whoever that sits on that position should be ready for all kind critics!

If Ato Melese Zenawi were under the Law, he would have never said “Melasun Kuret, Ejun kurut”

Entities/people that opposes Meles Zenaw’s one man rule, DO NOT BE FOOL by the ECONOMY where the supporters preaches about.

WE SHOULD NOT STOP STRUGGLING UNTIL WE MAKE A GOVERNMENT THAT PERFORMS ALL OF IT!

“TO ALL SUPPORTERS OF WEYANES"…
HIM ruled ethiopia, for 50 years, untill he could not even remembered his own name so i dont know what you are talking about. as to mengistu he did nothing good to be defended by people who lost at least one son, dauhter, brother or sister to his red terror campaign …by the way of course the struggle for better government and democracy should continue, but what does that have to do with sabotaging ethiopia development, taking stand against the country effort to over come poverty and preaching hate and bigotry 24/7?????

kul
i was thinking the same thing. i want yilma bekele address so i can send him one of this “made in ethiopia” cool shoes unless he is on “boycott ethiopia” team…lol….
