Reeyot Alemu missed an important dinner engagement in Beverly Hills. But she had a good excuse.
The 31-year-old journalist is jailed in the notoriously brutal, rodent-infested Kaliti prison in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. She’s two years into a five-year sentence for daring to write about poverty, opposition politics and gender equality.
The dinner she missed Monday was the annual awards ceremony, at the Beverly Hills Hotel, for the International Women’s Media Foundation, which celebrates courageous women journalists.
This year’s honorees included Alemu, whose detention will be reviewed next week by Ethiopia’s highest court, organizers said. There’s only modest reason to be hopeful, although the attention of the award could put pressure on the regime.
Even from prison, Alemu declined to be silent.

Let the world know, what kind of government exists in Ethiopia. Let the brutality, tyranny which the citizens faces be clear to all. The concentration style prison camps, their dark rooms, the savage interrogators, the ill treatment , the unhealthy confinement be clear to all.
Stay on the side of those who are in prison for political activities! Shout their shout for freedom!!!…..
Gashe mamo qillo,…
You’re making her case bad, when you lie through your teeth, saying consentration camp, dark rooms, torture bla bla,..
Don’t forget she has a lawyer too. They will be disappointed in you, the wanna be supporter, nothing but liar!!
The weyanne IRON MAN Addis zefen is defending his brutal militia who are now terrorising and arresting every one who tell truth and exposed their dirty criminal act. He is payed by hs weyanne boss in addis to watch this site NAZRET ,the only free media where every one express his/her idea and opinion.
He just got paid on 31 of octomber his monthly salary $150 to activate his remote brain and defend weyannes. But he is not bad at all when you know him well . I have a feeling I had met him in addis in late 80s and he knows ppl.that I know with class.
It is immoral and an abysmal status of the law in the country to put a person in jail without a reasonable cause of action. This action is not an indicator of development at all. Rather it is a loss of welfare. Writing what she feels shouldn’t put her in jail. Especially why they are so cruel on ladies? It is also unacceptable to paint with a terrorist name, like the Junedin Sado’s wife. Carrying of money from embassy does not indicate a crime.
Please, “Addis zemen",don’t judge a person by photo or appearance.
Adgi Banda and Bandas Co .Keep on barking touthless lekami Amice TPLF Shiwawas.
As was three years ago W/T Birtukan Mideksa ,this heroic Young Journalist has become your daily “NIGHTMARE” !!!
Adgi Banda ,and so what …It’s because she has the skills that Reeyot can exercise both jobs .Whether Lawyer and journalist. She is not like you and all your Adgiforum ,a bunch of goat herders ,gangs paid by
Agazis to spread lies and baseless propagandas …PARASITE ,MORON BANDA !!!!!
The two Swede journalists were sharing one restroom with 250 other prisioners. The Woeyanes have deliberately imported the jail conditions of Rwanda to our country. Not too many people care about the plight of the incarcerated or other victims anymore. Nowadays, most everybody is selfish, hyena, unpatriotic, not from godly or cultured family, opprtunists - which in turn gave the evil rulers the most of opportune times to consolidate power and control. They broke Birtukan Medeksa. The two Swedes on the other hand were ok. Reeyot Alemu and others we hope are in a better spirit.
Hurricane Sandy is the result of Susan Rice’s tribute to east Africa’s evil man that she gave in New York city days before Sandy barreled down on Big Apple. She showered praise on the son of the devil. She called darkness light. What can Reeyot Alemu say wasting away in prison when she hears the statements by the Ambassador? Yo Mrs. Ambassador, you owe nations a big one.

“Let the world know, what kind of government exists in Ethiopia” I don’t know what is your point by saying that, did you know Journalist Julian Assange hide from whom ?? He hide from G.B and The U.S.A. Mr.Assange wasn’t a Terrorist, but he cross the line, when he unvield the the West, so Ms.Reeyot Alemu she is not above the laws neither. She have to respect the laws of the land as every citzen. Unfortunately Political groups in the diaspora always try to relate their political agenda by using this kind of news as their political propoganda…
If you are allowed to drive on the right lane you can not say I have demcratic right and drive on the left lane. She can not be a representative of the worst kind of people like Elias in Addis and the government has nothing to do about it. People like Elias are representing Issayas on the other hand and the Ethiopian government has every right to jail all those who are in this conspiracy. It would have been done more harshly if it was another government and another country. But these brainless emigrant politicans need some one in jail no matter what.
The government have to show that there are consequences for what she and her supporters do.If there is more agitation by this woman and her supporters they should deny her food and if it continues more they should give her more apropriate harsh regieme. I am tired of these liers.

The cheap woeyanes might have targeted Reeyot Alemu, which in Amharic means ideology (Reeyot Alem), because of her name among other bogus, imaginary and trumped up charges. Mengistu’s children have revolutionary names but live a life of free, high and full of abundant lives. How low and for how long can we go on like this? Everywhere you turn whether locally or elsewhere and all over the places… its all wild, snake, fake, aremene, un-ethiopian types who thrive and remain untouchable.
I really can’t admire enough of the courage that Reeyot Alemu showed before these “rats” at Arat kilo threw her into Kaliti !!!.
Let’s think for a second, can anyone imagine such act of “Barbarism” committed every day in my homeland, just because people write about what they have observed!!!
It is beyond comprehension for me to even fathom how these “Hyenas” in Addis Abeba jail anyone that tries to open his/her mouth?
May be I have been in the States too long for me to forget that any third world government is far from being “Democratic". In fact when we all live in the “luxury” of having our basic human right protected, we tend to forget for a second if anyone here in the great U.S. of A such inhuman action takes place.
To be honest we don’t even dream of such “Evil action from one’s own government". In the good real world a government was supposed to protect it’s “Citizens” from harm and such. It is on the contrary in my birth place - Ethiopia!!
Reeyot Alemu we will follow your trail blazing journey!!!
Mesfin you are absolutly right concerning these barbaric goat herders torturing peoples just for not sharing their evil ideology .What can you expect from a bunch of goat herder bandits only used of the sound of bullets than a peaceful political transition .We are daily witnessing about their wickness on this website with the craps posted daily with their Moron Thuggy supporters as Adgi and Extrapente .Extrapente ante ye agazi
