Ethiopian restaurants are the worst when it comes to sanitations. It’s a cultural thing; I learned that from my trip to Ethiopia. Have you been any Ethiopian restaurant restrooms, please do not go if you ever been there. You will start vomiting. You would assume they would clean it since you use your finger to eat the soft bread but the bathroom is the worst please to be. Now I learned the kitchen is dirty. Will never go there!

it is amazing! where ever you go the ethiopian restaurants are so dirtyh. i have been to Awash called piece of sh**t restaurant in LA. U couldn't believe how dirty that place is. If you go @ summer time you swet to death no A/C no heat @ winter time. Bull sh**t. I don't even know how they do business in this country. I know that immigrant seeks food rather they would stick on eating sand from their back home. Now it appears that they want to reflect their hate toward Ethiopia , either emanated from a conflict with the country or existing as business competitors.

If there is a problem, inspectors can take care of it. This is a highly standardized country, and not like Erteria, Ethiopia, Somalia, Egypt and others which are obviously on development stages.

It's very common that Health inspectors often check businesses and sometimes close it temporarily due to sanitation or for some other reasons, and the subject restaurant happened to be an Ethiopian Restaurant, not a big deal..

Well, it is hard to generalize Ethiopian restaurants as dirty but some of them could REALLY do with some creativity when it come to bathrooms. Many new or fairly new Ethiopian restaurants are making efforts. I say, in restaurant business, the kitchen and bathroom must be the focal point & kept spotless clean 24/7. My motto is, if restaurants keep their bathrooms dirty, messy, ugly, stay the freakin hell away because the kitchen may be worse! Imagine if they keep a place where everybody can see that dirty, what would their unseen kitchen be like? It is simple logic so I hardly ever go back to restaurant with ugly & restrooms, not just Habesha but any kind!

I wish all Ethiopian restaurants get checked, graded so people know what exactly they are getting themselves into... It doesn't take much to keep CLEAN & the person better quit blaming employees for negligence? Hello! What is management responsibility?

It is not only the dirty condition of the restaurant that is troubling. The customer service is the worst. The arrogance. The incompetence. The poorly trained staff. The disorganized service. Luckily, you can force them close by not going. However, they are fellow Ethiopians who are trying to make a living. They are not bad people just a little ignorant. Twenty years ago more than half were real balemuyas who ran restaurants. They were in it as a real restauranters. Now anybody opens a makeshift eatery and try to clean your wallet. The tell-tell sign of the worst ones are, for example, they don't serve you ice water instead they intimidate you into ordering bottle water. For every strip mall restaurant, there are twice mini eateries that are stuck away elsewhere. There are plenty of them who overcharge or inflate the tab, but if you point out their erroneous figure they back away. A game. They don't invest back into their business like the white folks do. In fact, almost all foreigners do not invest in upgrading their business. We still have that 3rd-world mentality of being cheap and a small timer; as a result, the place looks dour, unkempt and old. Never the look and feel of fresh. The food is always suspect. The ingredients are always substitute. Most of all, kefetfitu fitu is a big problem. "If you don't like it leave it" or "don't come back" is the typical frustrated, incompetent and loser business owner rude awakening whether of restaurant or just a store. Blame Woeyanes because it used to be a completely different story. You can watch some of the tv programs whether the cooking shows, HGTV and others and learn a lot.

Some of us tend to veer of the basic and fundamental issues at hand and redirect our anger out and change it to a personal vendeta.

What has been stated in the report was not and is not going to be news by the common compartriots, unless the operators change their way of doing business as usaul.

The issue here is, this particular Ethiopian restaurant in Vegas is dirty and what can they (the owners) can do to change it, so all compartiots can enjoy the dining atmosphere. This has become a coomon occurence wherever you go.

I seen many accusation, roomers and gossips about Ethiopia in this website than any other websites I knew. I been in a lot of Ethiopian restaurants before and what you are accusing is may be true for one restaurant but absolutely not true the general Ethiopian restaurants, if you want to fight Ethiopia fight as a proud of fighters openly, not gossip and lie.

True True. Most "restaurant" owners are dumb hicks who emigrated from Gondar back in the 70's and stole so much money from 7-ekeven and started serving crap. As they made more money from nostalgic and homesick Ethiopians by charging upto $12 ( mind you this is even at a place called souk) and accumulating all that wealth they still don't know how american businesses attract and retain loyal customers.

However, think about it, they still get a stream of homesick, nostalgic Ethiopians willign to shell out huge amounts of money to feel like they're home so why incur all the extra expenses to clean or even appease their customers?

This is a true story: I went to one of the stores where they sell Ethiopian grocery ( berbere, shiro, injera and even Wot and also injera& wot) here in Dallas. I asked them to put a li'l extra wot on their beg wot adn they looked at me as if I just landed from Mars! and uttered that the food comes with a certain measurment of wot! Then I figured these dumb hicks are from Ethiopia so I told them I'll pay $2 extra dollars for it!

I don't know if my request was irrational? Mind you I pay $12 dollars for this crap already and ended up paying 14! I could buy 14 mcdoubles dor that. I wasn't a big Ethio food fan in the first place but now I've sworn off this crap. If I develop the cravign for it, I'll just try to cook.

Hopefully and may be all Ethiopian restaurants everywhere may not be as dirty as we think but my experience also suggests that some of them are very dirty and shamefully ignorant to say the least. Some one said that dirt is a cultural thing but I say that cleanliness and stinginess may be culture bound. Visit any ordinary Ethiopian restaurant serving national dish even in Addis Abeba and you will smell both exotic spices mixed with dirty smell from surrounding at the same time. They have never been tough the fact that they need to wash/clean floors, carpets, curtains, walls and ceilings as well as all the kitchen utensils, etc, and additionally use frequent ventilation every single day. But as you know, In Ethiopians mistakenly believe that opening bus windows, car windows and houses windows, etc. is bad since it causes sicknesses. But the contrary is true because keeping many people in a hall or bus with doors and windows closed will only expose you to all kinds of contagious disease such as contacting tuberculosis and other fatal sicknesses from other people. I have visited a miserable so called Ethiopian restaurant in North Europe where the owners were not even seem to like to see Ethiopian like customers and tried to void me as a customer by claiming that I should have reserved a table before coming. Then they let me seat outside on the dirty and dusty road side primitive bench where I have to pay 15 euros for for few spoonful of miserable sauce and a single tiny chicken wing. I was a local tourist in the town by then so I have to leave the miserable restaurant hungry and went to eat delicious and abundant meal from a nearby Vietnamese restaurant with half price. Too bad impression! I am glad that health authorities follow them and put an end to the madness wherever it is! Otherwise idiots never learn!

This is actually a topic that is overdue. Upkeep or customer service should have been discussed regularly at different blogs. Without malice, slander or deliberate harm, guys and gals should input their experiance at resraurants whenever there is a restaurant critique is posted by major newspapers and reposted by Ethiopian websites. The same about local radio stations, the yearly soccer event and so on. Once had an experiance on Colfax, a Denver, Co. restaurant where we were charged $16 for one veggie to go. The owner of the small eatery did not bother to explain. This was a lunch time price tag. One wonders how much the would be entrepreneur charges for dinner when the menu changes.
