Ethiopia Presents New Islamic Council

Ethiopia Presents New Islamic Council

By Marthe Van Der Wolf

VOA News

ADDIS ABABA
— The Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Council has presented their newly elected executive members. Many Ethiopian Muslims demonstrated against the election process of the Islamic Council for the past 10 months.

The Islamic Affairs Council presented 11 newly elected executive members in Addis Ababa, as the last round of elections ended Sunday. The members then chose Sheikh Kiyar Mohamed Aman as their chairperson. He addressed the rfit in the Ethiopian-Muslim community.

He says the council will do its best to deal with divisions in the Islamic community.

The formation of the Islamic Affairs Council follows months of demonstrations that ended in several clashes with the police and the arrest of more than 100 protesters, including nine prominent Muslim leaders. Those involved in the protests felt the government was trying to fix the council-election outcome and advocate a more liberal Islamic thought, known as Al-Abash.

Mohammed Rashid, technical advisor at the Islamic Affairs Council, says that since the new Islamic Affairs Council has been established, they are looking into ways of uniting the Ethiopian-Muslim community again.

“The newly elected executive members and the newly established Ethiopian Islamic Council institution will have a public representation that will address the question of the Ethiopian Muslims," said Rashid. "And, the next step is to sit down and to analyze the past and the current situation and to define a feasible strategy that will create a peaceful and a stable situation among the Muslim community.”

Muslims involved with leading the demonstrations say they do not want to comment on the outcome of the election at this point. Twenty-nine Ethiopian Muslims were charged last week with plotting acts of terrorism, following their involvement with the demonstrations in July.

Human-rights organization Amnesty International has condemned the government’s response to the demonstrations, saying most of those arrested and charged appear to have been targeted solely because of their participation in a peaceful protest movement.

How fair is the election when people and their leaders are in jail? The voice of the opposing views of the Muslim population is in grave danger.
Allow different views to be heard and don’t dictate who is gong to win. Some may object to my asking this question but intimidation is high and turn out was low.

What should be done?

To simply dismiss the rest of the population who don’t agree on the present scheme of Islamic council is not waranted.

Allow another Mejlis like pentes do with freedom from Synodos. Or allow diversity of views compete and thrive in the council. In other words allow plurarism. Allow Awolia to operate with a Board. Don’t give money to one side or otherwise allow others to earn money from their own source. Don’t stick with the idea that my choice is better, We lived in peace so we must act same. Acting in a different way but we have one country. No Muslim will compromise on his own country. Egyptians use copts to lure Ethiopian officials but I have not seen an Ethiopian leader using Muslims to lure Egyptians. Simply Ethiopian leaders are very unbending and uncompromising and this will lead to fragmentation.

Find a very clear path to plurarism and stop intervention both in orthodox and Islam. Orthodox may not survive without help from government unless the people raise money to help it with competition. No wonder Wayane uses orhtodox as a scapegoat as it has the money clout.

The present protest should stop until there is clear indication that the government wants to jail them.

If there is a strong faith who serves the God/Alah`s orders doesn´t matter. God/Alah comes not in the most respected, educated, wealthy or else….he comes in the most excluded, poor and weak in order to give us lessons. Unless there is a rush for power or salary by sitting a leader place, there doesn´t matter who site in the sofa. —he give us the orders to love each other, “ene endewededkuwachu ers berasachu tewadedu” …So, if it is for the real interest of to serve God it is not by demanding respect and leadership, it is by keeping down yourself and respect his orders.

Lets got lessons from our neighbors Libya, it will take them almost 30-40 years to come back to where they were before the war. Our disagreement favors to our enemies. And we had enough of war and killing, as a result it put us the most poor and most migrated people all over the world, though we have a beautiful country and ample resources. We are human with varied interests, we will have us differences, it is a general truth, but we need to solve in a win win situation, sometimes losing some interests for the betterment of the mass and the nation as a whole. My God save our people and Ethiopia.

Gragn Ahmed (visitor),

Fair or unfair, the election is over; take it or leave it. This is the last chance you have and you better follow what Rashid is saying. If you want a total war in our Christian country, you try it and taste us, and you will see what will happen to these Ethiopian Jihadist Muslims, your cousins. You better stop your vain boasting that there are 50 million Muslims in Ethiopia: there are only 13 or 15 million Muslims in Ethiopia, and most of them are not Ethiopians; they are refugees from Somalia and Eritrea. Therefore, you have no choice to continue protesting forever in the Christian land of Ethiopia. We have tolerated you so far; but our tolerance has its own limitation. You are cajoling us into giving you the absolute control of our Christian kingdom that will never happen. Hence, shut your mouth and collect your biweekly welfare check.

muslim
A person who believes Allah, prays his/her own private ways and the most important; feels very ashamed of how come some idiots bomb some places, kills innocent people and says they’re Muslims. It’s totally wrong.

A Muslim can’t kill, a Muslim can’t say any bad words to hurt people, a Muslim can’t make love if he/she’s not married, a Muslim has to do at least one nice thing everyday just for favor, a Muslim has to help other people, a Muslim has to be a good person if he/she wants to be a good slave of Allah. These are the most important rules for them.
“Killing is the biggest sin for a Muslim.”

Gragn Ahmed (visitor),

My Ethiopian brothers need to compromise here. One thing is for sure, Ethiopia is not a 100% Christian or Islam nation, it will never be. It is BOTH. No matter who has the population advantage, it is important to respect even if there is only one Muslim or one Christian. No matter who is the majority, peace is the only way. Again there is only one common enemy here and it is dictatorship. The mentality that ones religion or ones ethnicity is superior or better, is a misconception of reality, which dictators use to divide and rule. People come first and of course their lively hood. The why they ELECT their leaders, is based on this mere fact of wanting to be treated just as the next person, Tigre or Amhara.. Christian or Islam. Elected leaders do just that, however since Ethiopians do not have the right(freedom) to a free election (reason why yours truly lives in the USA) is what needs to change and not the supermacy of Islam over Christianity.

So, Astagebru, your threats mean nothing in the end and ‘take it or leave it’ does not do good but make a bad situation worse. Muslims have the right to pick their religious leaders, Islamist or not.

Gran Ahmed, you must understand you, Muslims, are not the only ones who are threatened by this regime. Its all Ethiopians. Like I said, you must take up the cause of all Ethiopians to be credible. You, Muslims, must stand up against Eprdf’s dictatorship as Ethiopians as a whole and not on a separate instance as a Muslim. You need to learn that the “injustice on one is injustice on all".

We all need to learn to support each other as Ethiopians keeping in mind one who has no country has no rule of law nor his rights respected.. look at Somalia and decide which way to go…!

muslim
Read these quotes -
they’ll
tell you what
a muslim really
is

“Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews,
and the Christians, and the Sabians -whoever believes
in God and the Last Day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord. And there will be no fear for them, nor shall they grieve” (2:62, 5:69,).
“We believe in God, and in what has been revealed
to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Isma’il,
Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and in (the Books)
given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets, from their
Lord: We make no distinction between one and another
among them, and to God do we bow our will (in Islam).” (Surat Al Imran; 3:84).
“…and nearest among them in love to the
believers will you find those who say, ‘We
are Christians,’ because amongst these are
men devoted to learning and men who have renounced
the world, and they are not arrogant” (5:82).
“O you who believe! Be helpers of God -
as Jesus the son of Mary said to the Disciples,
‘Who will be my helpers in (the work of) God?’
Said the disciples, ‘We are God’s helpers!’
Then a portion of the Children of Israel believed,
and a portion disbelieved. But We gave power to
those who believed, against their enemies, and
they became the ones that prevailed” (61:14).
“We had Jesus, the son of Mary, follow in
their footsteps in order to confirm what had
come before him from the Torah and We gave
him the Gospel which contains guidance and Light,to confirm what he already had in the Old Testament, and as guidance and a lesson for those who do their duty.
Let the people of the Gospel judge by what God has sent down in it; Those who do not judge by what God has sent down are perverse!” The Quran 5:45

DO YOU STILL CALL US INTOLERANT?

TO TERRORISTS WHO CLAIM TO BE MUSLIMS - you’re not, the biggest proof is you havent read the quran:
” Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and fair admonition, and argue with them in the kindest way. your Lord knows best who is misguided from His way.And He knows best who are guided.” (Surat an-Nahl; 16:125).
The recompense for an injury
is an injury equal thereto (in degree),
but if a person forgives and makes reconciliation,
his reward is due from God,
for God loves not those who do wrong.
But indeed, if any do help and defend themselves
after a wrong done to them,
against such there is no cause of blame.
The blame is only against those who oppress men
with wrongdoing and insolently transgress
beyond bounds through the land,
defying right and justice.
For such there will be a penalty grievous (in the Hereafter).
But indeed, if any show patience and forgive,
that would truly be an affair of great resolution.
Qur’an 42:40-43
Goodness and evil are not equal.
Repel evil with what is better.
Then that person with whom there was hatred,
may become your intimate friend!
And no one will be granted such goodness
except those who exercise patience and self-restraint,
none but people of the greatest good fortune.
Qur’an 41:34-35
“It may be that God will grant love (and friendship) between you and those whom ye (now) hold as enemies. For God has power (over all things), and God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
God does not forbid you, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for God loves those who are just.”

Commentator Assta B. Gettu, is confused, US Parking attendant, amhara or eretrian who is trying to fuel proxy war in Ethiopia. THe Ethiopian muslims and christians have a common enemy that is non constitutionally interfering gov. that will be avoided in cooperation sisterly believers since it is their common enemy. The ethiopian head of church is also appointed as a poletical figure however unlike christians muslims can’t accept the same approach. that is why we are watching continued protests that may continue until solutions will be found. Allah Acubar!!!

Muslim
The term for followers of the Islamic religion. Sadly, in light of recent worldly events have een given a horrible name. A few radical “followers” of the religion scewed it for their own personal benifits and have ruined the lives/ increases the racism towards true muslims. The religion is one of peace, actually, and head covering is a choice. Also to wear an entire body veil (burka) is a government run thing, not a religious rule. Saudi Arabia can be blamed for that. There are many good muslim countries (Ex. Lebanon, dubai, jordan, turkey) that are a great mix of westernized and cultural. Very family oriented people, most of the males are inclined towards math/science. Most woman are poetry writers or doctors. Very hard working and driven. Most pretty relgious.
Boy 1: Look at that muslim! He must be a terrorist!
Girl 1: No, that is a very small minority, and a political idea rather than a religious one.

Boy 1: Wow… I feel ignorant now.

The weak Woyane regime must stop interfering in people’s religion.

Religion and politics are different and must be treated separately.

Woyane regime muddles in religion, culture, economics, land, property, language, ethnic relation and everything because it can not stand on its own.

Its means of holding on to power is only through creating division among people. It is not supported by 95% of Ethiopians from that 85% of the population are Amaras and Oromos.

The majority must reject and resist against the greedy power and money leech Woyanes.
Woyanes are extremely bad for Ethiopia. They are there only to serve, to steal and enrich themselves by robbing the whole Ethiopia.

MHADI AHMED (visitor),

I wish every Muslim follows what you have said, but those sweet words of yours are not either in the Quran or in the Hadith. The Quran and the Hadith have very few verses that advocate peace, and those few verses are plagiarized from the Holy Scriptures. The Quran and the Hadith are full of violent words. For example, how come Islam does not allow a person to leave Islam if he wants to? Of course, If he leaves, he will be killed. How do you justify such a Quranic verse as the word of Allah?
