Ethiopia moves up 16 places in FIFA rankings, best ranking since 2006

Ethiopia joins Nigeria, Zambia and Burkina Faso in Group C for African Cup of Nations

Ethiopia moves up 16 places in FIFA rankings best ranking since 2006

nazret.com - Ethiopian football has never looked so good in several years. Once a giant in African football, Ethiopian football was in decline for a generation, that is until recently. For the first time in more than 30 years, Ethiopia has qualified for African Cup of Nations and that has helped the country to climb 16 places to rank 102 in the world according to the latest FIFA rankings. This is the best ranking since 2006 when it was ranked 92 and the only other time Ethiopia broke in the top 100 was back in 1993 ranking 96. The latest ranking is the third best showing for Ethiopia, since FIFA introduced the rankings in December 1992.

Spain remains the top team in the world followed by Germany and Argentina. Côte d'Ivoire, Algeria and Mali are the top three teams in Africa. Sudan is tied with Ethiopia at 102 and Kenya ranks 130, Eritrea (192), Somalia (193), South Sudan (200) and Djibouti (202).

The ranking is encouraging but by no means what this football-crazy nation would be satisfied with. Ethiopia may be known for its world class distance runners around the world, but no sport comes close to football in its popularity in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has a special place in African football as one of the founding members of the African Football Federation. It has won the African Cup of Nations in 1962 and was a runner-up in 1957. 2013 will mark the first time Ethiopia is competing for the African Cup of Nations in 31 years. Ethiopia is also vying to make history in the World Cup qualification as it leads Group A for FIFA World Cup Qualification from Africa.

Taking the civil war into oncideration Ethiopia was doing in football during derg time (100, 1993).

Eritra which helped ‘Ethiopia’ to win all cups until 1993 went down to 192!!

This is the work of CIA. To disgrace shabia in comparing eritrea with a country hard hit by civil war in the last 21 years.

Thanks Nazrets, well analized and written about our football history, and where we are now. I’m sure if we make it to the world cup, it will be a history made and a new chapter to our football!

I am enthusiastic that my beloved Ethiopia has finally qualified for the continental finals in South Africa.
But I am very pessimistic about the overall development of football in our country, and I don’t share the view that we deserved better, because we are far from being called a football-crazy nation. Last year I was in A.A. Stadium twice and watched four league games. The stadium was almost empty, all the games were horrible, the pitch was the worst I have ever seen, and the referees were frustrating. Even those games with full stadiums (like St. George -vs- Buna that I watched on tv ) were full of horrible fouls and boring tricks of running out the clock once a team scored a goal.

Proof; click on the fifa ranking and you will see ethiopia on number 122 but not on 102.
Kikikikk…..basically it is so hard or it is almost a dream to get real and true informantion.

“…this football-crazy nation would be satisfied with. Ethiopia may be known for its world class distance runners around the world.”

why is the author of the article hidden. hopefully not another article authored by foreigners. we should be highly selective when we post articles written by foreigners as we dont want to brainwash our people with other people’s perspectives. i cant also understand why ethiopians are football-crazy. it is simply imposed on the youth by the officials. ethiopians never asked for it. for example british primer league and european champions league matches were imposed on us, often with the intention to distract the youth from politics. it was social engineering and a harmful habit like chat chewing and alcohol drinking. playing football and other kinds of sport maybe good but watching european football
matches lets say more than a few times in a year is dangerous and wasting of our limited resources like time and emotions.
we should fight to limit television broadcasts of european football matches and bring the youth to use their time for more productive purposes.

enough with this artificially created football mania. i couldn’t care less about football unless it is final and semi final world cup and africa cup matches and matches where ethiopia is involved. it is sick and stupid that ethiopian youth know so good about european clubs and their players when they should have used their gray matter for learning about their history, political realities and how to solve their
economic and social problems.

ban or limit broadcasting of foreign football matches !

Believe me Ethiopia is going to be first from all African team. We don’t go for 2nd for anything, Ethiopian team have to consider this is peaceful but a war between nations. It is a history to live for the next generation and returning the pride of the country no niceness, niceness cannot be a gall. Ethiopian team needs to prepare mentally not less than field practice. No one pass the defenses and no one stops the front player from making galls. All the team members must promises for themselves to take care of their body by workout and mentally prepared. Let God be with Ethiopian teams.

Ethiopia is doing very good after Eritren got their independency. Eritrean never been a help of Ethiopian cause, Eritrean sindrome is leaving the country because of that Ethiopia is doing very good in Economy and sport. If Eritrean were help Ethiopia football team to win in history Eritrean should have better rank than Ethiopia. Eritrean team is lucky they are in another group otherwise if they were playing against Ethiopian team they will be whipped by jegenochu “Walias". Good luck, kids!
